Choose the exact Paris station before paying

Paris has several long-distance terminals rather than one central station. Each points towards a different group of destinations, and some trains use a secondary or suburban station. A booking result labelled only "Paris" can hide an important part of the journey.

The route gives you a useful starting point, but the full train details confirm the station. Check every Paris stop before paying, especially on a connecting itinerary. Gare du Nord and Gare de l'Est are close but separate, and Gare de Lyon is a Paris terminal rather than the station in the city of Lyon.

Use the table for orientation, then read the ticket. OUIGO can leave from a main terminal or a secondary station such as Massy-Palaiseau, Massy TGV or Marne-la-Vallée-Chessy. The full station name is what matters.

Gare du Nord and Gare de l'Est serve different journeys

Gare du Nord is the station for Eurostar to London, Brussels and Amsterdam. London departures involve passport and luggage checks. Follow the recommended arrival time on the ticket: Standard and Plus gates close 30 minutes before departure, while Premier gates close 15 minutes before departure.

Continental Eurostar trains have a lighter boarding process. Eurostar recommends arriving at least 30 minutes before departure and being ready to board ten minutes before a Paris departure. Those timings do not apply to a London train. Check the current arrival guidance for your exact departure before you travel.

Gare du Nord is also the mainline interchange for RER B to Charles de Gaulle Airport. RER B and RER D run below the station, alongside Metro lines 2, 4 and 5. Check live engineering information before building a tight airport or cross-city connection around them.

Trains to Strasbourg and many German destinations use Gare de l'Est. The direct Paris to Berlin service is a daily ICE co-operated by SNCF and DB, with a journey time of about eight hours. It leaves from Gare de l'Est, so confirm the timetable before pairing it with an arriving Eurostar.

Nord and Est are close enough to walk between. They are still different stations. With luggage or mobility needs, check the accessible route and lift status instead of relying on the shortest map estimate.

Gare de Lyon and Montparnasse cover major corridors

Most high-speed trains towards Lyon, Marseille and the Mediterranean use Gare de Lyon. The fastest services reach Lyon in about 1 hour 45 minutes and Marseille in just over three hours. Direct TGV Lyria trains take about 3 hours 15 minutes to Geneva, while the fastest current Zurich journeys take roughly 4 hours 20 minutes.

Italy needs an operator check. SNCF runs TGV INOUI and Trenitalia runs Frecciarossa from Gare de Lyon towards Turin and Milan. The tickets and conditions are separate. A direct Paris to Milan TGV INOUI takes about seven hours, but check which operator you selected before paying.

Gare Montparnasse handles Bordeaux, Rennes, Nantes and much of the Atlantic or southwest axis. The fastest trains take about 2 hours 10 minutes to Bordeaux, 1 hour 30 minutes to Rennes and two hours to Nantes. Reaching Montparnasse from the right bank near Gare du Nord can add a substantial city journey before the TGV.

Montparnasse has several halls and levels. Read the hall and platform information for the selected train, then allow extra time when arriving by Metro with luggage. A fragile cross-city connection is rarely worth saving ten minutes on the mainline train.

Saint-Lazare, Austerlitz and Bercy need an exact train check

The main Normandy routes to Rouen, Caen and Le Havre leave from Gare Saint-Lazare. They are sold as TER or NOMAD Train, and reservation treatment depends on the service or fare. Read the train details rather than assuming every regional-looking departure works the same way.

Gare d'Austerlitz has direct Intercités to Limoges and Toulouse, along with domestic night trains such as Paris to Nice. The old direct Paris to Barcelona sleeper is no longer the answer. Direct trains to Barcelona are daytime TGV INOUI services from Gare de Lyon.

Gare de Bercy sits close to Gare de Lyon but remains a separate station. Direct Intercités to Clermont-Ferrand and some slower TER services towards Burgundy and Lyon use Bercy. If the ticket says Bercy, the departure board at Gare de Lyon will not help.

Cross-Paris transfers need a generous margin

Allow at least 60 minutes between different Paris terminals. Around 90 minutes is more sensible when the onward train is international, overnight or the last practical departure. The Metro or RER ride is only one part of the change.

Nord to Est is usually a walk. RER D links Gare du Nord with Gare de Lyon when it is operating normally, while Nord to Montparnasse involves a longer Metro journey. Check engineering information on the day because a closure can turn a simple transfer into a slow one.

Ticket protection matters as much as the clock. EU missed-connection rights apply to journeys covered by a through-ticket, but not automatically to separately contracted tickets. Before accepting a short connection, find out whether the complete itinerary is protected as one booking.

Heavy luggage, children or reduced mobility all make the station route more important than the timetable suggests. A taxi can help with an awkward terminal change, but Paris traffic gives no fixed-time guarantee.

Charles de Gaulle and Orly use different rail links

RER B links central Paris with Charles de Gaulle Airport, and Gare du Nord is the most useful mainline interchange. Check the flight terminal as well. Arriving at the airport rail station does not finish every terminal journey.

For Orly Airport, use Metro Line 14. It serves Gare de Lyon and central interchanges, so there is no reason to head to Gare du Nord simply because that station works for Charles de Gaulle. The two airports use different routes.

An ordinary Metro-Train-RER ticket costs €2.55 and covers two hours of rail connections without leaving the network. It does not cover airport travel. The €14 Paris Region Airports ticket covers Metro, train, RER and Orlyval travel to or from Orly and Charles de Gaulle. Both products can be loaded onto a Navigo Easy pass or a compatible phone. When loading either ticket, confirm its current price and product rules for your journey.

For an early flight, confirm the first useful train and leave time for the walk through the terminal and airport security. Engineering work can alter an otherwise direct trip.

Representative routes show how Paris rail travel works

Eurostar runs direct from Paris Gare du Nord to London St Pancras in as little as 2 hours 17 minutes and to Brussels in 1 hour 22 minutes. Direct Amsterdam trains take roughly 3 hours 25 minutes to just over four hours, depending on the date and stopping pattern.

The direct daytime ICE from Gare de l'Est reaches Berlin in about eight hours. From Gare de Lyon, direct TGV Lyria services take about 3 hours 15 minutes to Geneva, while the fastest current Zurich journeys take roughly 4 hours 20 minutes. Check the station, operator and stops before payment.

Within France, TGV INOUI and OUIGO cover many of the same broad corridors. They do not always share a station, luggage allowance or level of flexibility. Representative fastest times are about 1 hour 45 minutes to Lyon, just over three hours to Marseille, 2 hours 10 minutes to Bordeaux and 1 hour 30 minutes to Rennes.

Regional TER and Transilien trains work differently from reserved TGVs. For Versailles, compare Line L from Saint-Lazare to Versailles Rive Droite, Line N from Montparnasse to Versailles Chantiers and RER C to Versailles Château Rive Gauche. Live works can change the most useful option from a given starting point.

Full tickets and pass reservations are different products

Start by identifying the operator and train category. A TGV INOUI ticket includes travel and a reserved seat. OUIGO is SNCF's low-cost product, with compulsory booking and a tighter included luggage allowance. OUIGO Grande Vitesse advertises selected one-way tickets from €19, but that fare applies only to eligible trains and dates.

An Interrail or Eurail Pass covers eligible TGV INOUI travel, but pass holders still need a compulsory reservation. Domestic TGV reservations have €10 and €20 tiers, subject to availability. Check the current reservation charge for your exact train before paying. A pass on its own is not enough to board a reserved TGV.

Eurostar also requires a separate pass-holder reservation, and its pass allocation can sell out before ordinary tickets. OUIGO and Trenitalia Frecciarossa are excluded from Interrail and Eurail coverage in France. Buy a full ticket for those trains rather than looking for a pass reservation.

TGV INOUI is usually the stronger choice when flexibility, included luggage or the central terminal matters more. OUIGO makes sense when the final fare and station still work after adding any extras. Compare the operator, luggage allowance, refund conditions and final ticket cost before paying.

The final Paris leg belongs in the booking decision

Plan the route from the arrival station to the accommodation before choosing the mainline train. Metro and RER platforms are on different levels from the mainline concourse, and the local leg may need its own Paris transport product.

Official luggage storage is available at Gare du Nord, Gare de Lyon and Gare Montparnasse. Opening hours, capacity, payment and prices differ by station. Storage at Nord is no help before a Montparnasse departure unless there is time to retrieve the bag and cross Paris.

Accessibility can change the sensible route. SNCF publishes live lift and escalator status on its station pages, while Assist'enGare arranges free station assistance. Book assistance no later than 24 hours before departure if you need it guaranteed. When arranging Assist'enGare, confirm the current notice period, required arrival time and meeting point for your train.
