Barcelona to Paris by train

TGV inOui trains run directly between Barcelona Sants and Paris Gare de Lyon, 1,073 km in roughly 6 hours 44 minutes to 6 hours 50 minutes depending on the service. SNCF and Renfe operate it jointly. Most days there are two departures in each direction; advance second-class fares start from around €39, first class from around €59.

Advance fares go by names like Prems, Mini, Essential, or Leisure depending on the booking channel. They are non-refundable and non-exchangeable in most cases. Flexible fares allow changes and refunds, usually at a fee. Book early: fares climb as the departure date gets closer, and on busy dates trains can sell out weeks ahead.

Children: Children aged 4 to 11 can travel from around €39 on advance fares. Children under 4 travel free if they do not occupy a separate seat, or pay a small fee for a reserved seat.

Tickets go on sale up to six months before departure. Trains running just after the mid-December timetable change usually become bookable in October.

Overnight indirect options

There is no direct overnight train from Barcelona to Paris. Two routes exist via the Intercités de Nuit from Paris, but both require a train change on the Spanish side of the border.

From Perpignan, a high-speed TGV or Ouigo service continues to Barcelona Sants (advance fares from around €25). From Cerbère, a local train runs to Barcelona, though the Cerbère overnight departure from Paris only operates in summer. Check reservation requirements before booking.

Train companies and services

The Paris-Barcelona service uses TGV inOui trains, run jointly by SNCF and Renfe. The TGV inOui is a double-deck high-speed train (TGV Duplex) with second and first class, air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, power sockets at every seat, and an onboard bistro.

Renfe also runs a separate service called AVE International, which connects Lyon with Barcelona and Marseille with Madrid. That is not the Paris train. If you are travelling between Barcelona and Paris, you want the TGV inOui.

Ouigo is a budget single-class option on selected France-Spain departures. Ouigo fares can be cheaper than TGV inOui advance prices, but the booking conditions and onboard service are more basic. Check ouigo-espana.es for current routes and fares.

Deck selection

The TGV Duplex is a double-deck train. When booking on sncf-connect.com or Trainline, you can choose upper or lower deck. Upper deck windows are larger. Lower deck is easier if you have bulky luggage or reduced mobility.

Reduced mobility

Passengers with reduced mobility can request assistance in advance. Dedicated seating and accessible facilities are available. Contact SNCF or Renfe when booking to confirm what is on your specific service.

Train stations

Barcelona Sants is where all TGV inOui services to Paris depart. Metro lines 3 and 5 serve the station, as do regional and long-distance trains. Luggage storage, shops, and restaurants are available.

Paris Gare de Lyon is where you arrive. Metro lines 1 and 14 and RER lines A and D all stop here, giving straightforward access to central Paris and connections toward Charles de Gaulle airport (via RER B from Chatelet-Les-Halles).

How to buy tickets

Three main channels cover this route, and all of them sell the same SNCF fares at the same prices:

sncf-connect.com is SNCF’s own site and charges no booking fee. You can pick upper or lower deck, and first-class buyers get a seat map. One limitation: it cannot book onward trains within Spain.

Trainline (thetrainline.com) charges a small booking fee but handles international payment cards well, offers seat-map selection, and can book onward Spanish trains in the same transaction.

Rail Europe (raileurope.com) also charges a small booking fee and covers onward connections in Spain.

The choice between them mostly comes down to whether you need to book a Spanish connection at the same time. If not, sncf-connect.com saves you the fee. Tickets can be shown on your phone; no need to print.

Ways to save money

• Book early. The cheapest advance allocations go first, often within the first few weeks after tickets go on sale.

• Travel midweek. Off-peak departures and non-holiday weeks tend to have more availability at lower prices.

• SNCF discount cards. If you use French trains regularly, SNCF cards such as Carte Avantage give a percentage off standard fares throughout the year. Check SNCF Connect for current options and fees.

Trains stop at Figueres Vilafant, Girona, Perpignan, and stations in southern France including Nimes and Montpellier. Not every departure calls at every station; check the specific service on sncf-connect.com.

Figueres Vilafant station is about 5 km from Figueres town centre. Taxis are available at the station.

Onboard experience

Second class has comfortable seats, free Wi-Fi, power sockets, and fold-down tables. First class offers wider seats, more legroom, and priority access to the bistro. First-class passengers booking on sncf-connect.com can pick their exact seat from a seat map.

The bistro car serves hot and cold food and drinks. There is no table service in second class; you go to the bistro car yourself.

Small pets in a carrier (under 10 kg) can travel on TGV inOui services for a fee. Check the current fee on sncf-connect.com when booking.

Extra costs and ticket rules

Seat reservation and booking fees

Seat reservations are included in all standard TGV inOui tickets. There is no separate reservation charge when buying a point-to-point ticket.

If you are booking through the Interrail or Eurail system, the pass-holder reservation costs €35 per person per train for the TGV Barcelona-Paris. Interrail online bookings also carry an administration fee of €2 per person per train. If you choose a paper ticket rather than a digital one, there is a processing fee of €9 per order.

Ticket change and cancellation rules

What you can do with a ticket after buying it depends on the fare type. Advance fares (Prems, Mini, Essential, Leisure) are usually non-refundable and non-exchangeable, or carry a change fee. Flexible fares allow changes, sometimes free up to a set number of days before departure, and may carry a modest cancellation fee. Baggage rules

• Checked luggage: Up to 3 pieces, each no larger than 85 x 55 x 35 cm, with a total combined weight of 25 kg.

• Hand luggage: One piece, maximum 46 x 70 cm, under 30 kg.

• All bags need a visible label with your first and last name. Luggage tagging is mandatory on this international service.

• Special items such as skis, golf bags, or disassembled bikes must fit within 120 x 90 cm.

These limits have applied to TGV services between Barcelona and Paris since 2024.

Interrail and Eurail passes

Both Interrail and Eurail passes are valid on the TGV inOui between Barcelona and Paris. A seat reservation is mandatory and cannot be skipped.

• Reservation fee (TGV Barcelona-Paris): €35 per person per train, booked through the Interrail or Eurail pass-holder booking system.

• Administration fee: €2 per person per train for Interrail online bookings.

• Paper ticket fee: €9 per order, if you choose paper over digital.

Your pass must cover both France and Spain. A pass valid in only one country does not work on this cross-border route.

Book the reservation early. Seat allocations for pass holders are limited, and the daily services do fill up.

Renfe’s AVE International trains between Lyon and Barcelona are a different service from the Paris direct, and they have different pass-holder reservation fees: €25 for Elige class, or €28 for Elige Confort.

Train versus flying

The TGV inOui takes around 6 hours 44 to 50 minutes from Barcelona Sants to Paris Gare de Lyon, city centre to city centre. Flying takes roughly 2 hours in the air, but once you add check-in, security, airport transfers at both ends, and baggage collection, the real door-to-door time is typically 5 to 6 hours or more. For most travellers, the difference is smaller than it looks on paper, and the train drops you right in the centre of each city.
