Renfe trains
Last updated: August 2026
Renfe is Spain's national train company. Its network includes AVE high-speed services, Avlo low-cost high-speed trains, Alvia, Euromed, Intercity, regional services and commuter trains. For a long journey between Spain's main cities, start by checking the exact Renfe service, station and fare rather than searching only by city name.
Booking Renfe tickets
The official Renfe website and app show the operator's current trains, fares and conditions. They are the clearest place to check a journey before paying. Third-party sellers can make international booking easier, but their service fees and change or refund processes may differ, so compare the final conditions with Renfe when the route matters.
Major stations also sell tickets at counters and machines. That is useful when an online booking fails, but popular AVE departures and cheaper fare options can sell out. For a fixed long-distance itinerary, search and book as soon as your dates are available, then read the conditions attached to the selected fare.
Renfe tickets for AVE and other long-distance services are issued to a named passenger. Carry the identity document shown in the booking, because identity checks may take place during boarding or on the train. Keep the digital ticket available offline so you are not dependent on station or onboard connectivity.
AVE routes and journey planning
AVE is Renfe's flagship high-speed service. Renfe's current route map includes the main corridors from Madrid to Barcelona, València, Málaga, Seville and Alicante, as well as routes through Córdoba and connections towards Granada, Murcia, Galicia and other cities. The map also shows international AVE services between Spain and France, including Barcelona - Lyon and Madrid - Marseille.
Madrid is the main AVE hub, with services using Puerta de Atocha - Almudena Grandes and Chamartín depending on the journey. Barcelona services use Barcelona Sants. Check the departure station on the ticket: a city can have more than one major station, and the station shown in a route search is part of the journey you are booking.
Madrid - Barcelona is a useful time reference: Eurail describes the trip as taking less than three hours on AVE. Exact journey times and departures vary by train, date and timetable period, so use that as orientation only. Renfe's route pages show the current service pattern and first departures for individual corridors; check the live result before making a connection or booking a fixed activity.
For journeys outside the main AVE corridors, compare AVE with Avlo, Alvia, Euromed or Intercity. A slower train can be the practical choice if it serves the station or destination you actually need. If your route involves a change, check both the transfer station and the time between trains rather than assuming that a city-to-city search means a simple connection.
Fares, seats and reservations
AVE is a reserved service. Your ticket is for a named passenger, a specific train and date, and an assigned seat. You cannot use a general rail ticket as a walk-on substitute. Check the coach and seat details as soon as the ticket is issued.
Renfe's current AVE and long-distance fare structure combines a fare family with a seat type:
- Básico uses a Standard seat and is the restricted option. Changes, refunds, seat choice and other extras depend on the conditions shown for the journey.
- Elige Estándar uses a Standard seat with the Elige conditions. Elige Confort uses a larger Comfort seat. These options are useful when you need more choice or flexibility than Básico, but the exact extras still depend on the fare selected.
- Prémium uses a Comfort seat and includes the most extensive bundle of extras on eligible domestic AVE and long-distance journeys, including seat choice, flexibility, Club Lounge access and in-seat food service. Prémium is not available on Renfe's AVE international services between Spain and France.
The Standard seat normally uses a 2+2 layout. The Comfort seat is wider and normally uses a 2+1 layout, although Renfe lists a 2+2 Comfort layout on AVE 106 trains. Fare names and included services are not interchangeable with Avlo or with another seller's labels, so read the conditions for the exact train.
Renfe uses demand-based pricing, and the fare depends on the date, train, availability and flexibility. There is no useful fixed public price for every AVE journey. Buying earlier can expose lower fares, but compare the saving with the cost of changing plans if your dates are not firm.
Rail passes and AVE reservations
An Interrail or Eurail Pass does not remove the AVE reservation requirement. Eurail states that reservations are mandatory on AVE and recommends arranging them as early as possible. Make the reservation through the pass reservation channel or an authorised Renfe sales point, and carry the valid pass, reservation and identity document together.
Renfe's Spain Rail Pass is a different product. It is for people resident outside Spain, is personal and non-transferable, and offers a choice of four, six, eight or ten journeys. It can be used on national long-distance trains including AVE, but each journey still has to be validated by obtaining the ticket for the chosen route and train. The pass offers Standard or Comfort seats, not Prémium. Check the current terms before buying because the validity period and eligible services are product conditions.
What to expect onboard
AVE trains generally provide a comfortable long-distance seat, luggage storage, Wi-Fi through PlayRenfe and power access, but facilities can differ by train and route. Food service also depends on the train and fare. Renfe's current information lists cafeteria or mobile-bar service on AVE and includes more extensive in-seat food and drink with eligible Prémium tickets. Do not treat a meal, lounge access or a specific onboard layout as included unless it appears in your fare conditions.
Renfe's luggage page allows up to three pieces of hand luggage on regular services, provided their combined weight does not exceed 25 kg or their combined dimensions do not exceed 290 cm. Each piece may be no larger than 85 x 55 x 35 cm. Avlo has a stricter policy, so check the service name before you pack. Bikes, scooters, musical instruments and pets have separate conditions.
AVE and long-distance tickets also include the Combinado Cercanías benefit on eligible journeys, allowing a local transfer around the departure or arrival window shown by Renfe. Check the ticket and station instructions if you plan to use it, especially in Madrid, Málaga, València or the Murcia/Alicante area.
Accessibility and station planning
The current assistance service for passengers with disabilities or reduced mobility is Adif Acerca. It is free and can help with access through the station and boarding or leaving the train. Request it when buying the ticket or through the service channels shown by Renfe, and check the station's request deadline: Renfe lists assistance on request up to 30 minutes before departure at some permanent-service stations and up to 12 hours before departure at some ad-hoc stations.
The deadline depends on the station and service. Do not rely on the old assumption that every request has the same 48-hour rule. Go to the Adif Acerca office at the departure station at the time stated in your assistance confirmation.
Popular Renfe journeys
The main AVE corridors make Madrid a useful base for reaching Barcelona, Seville, Málaga, València and Alicante. Córdoba, Granada, Toledo and other destinations are also connected by high-speed or long-distance services, but the train category and departure station can differ. Search the exact origin and destination, then confirm the station and whether the result is direct.
Barcelona is the main Spanish gateway for the international AVE services shown by Renfe towards France. If you are continuing beyond Spain, compare the international train's fare and reservation conditions with the domestic AVE rules: Prémium is not available on the Spain - France AVE service, and pass reservations may follow a separate process.
Practical checks before you travel
Before paying, check five things:
- The operator and train type. AVE, Avlo, Alvia and other Renfe services do not share every fare, baggage or onboard rule.
- The exact departure and arrival stations. Madrid and Barcelona in particular have more than one important station.
- The fare family, seat type, change conditions and included services.
- Whether a pass reservation or a separate route validation is required.
- The live departure time, platform information and any connection time on the day of travel.
For most travellers, Standard seating with the least restrictive fare that still fits the itinerary is the sensible starting point. Pay for Comfort or Prémium when the extra space, included service or flexibility will actually improve the journey, not simply because the label sounds more premium.
Renfe can make long journeys across Spain straightforward, but the useful choice is made at booking. Match the train, station, seat and fare conditions to your actual plan, then check the live service details before you leave.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between AVE and Avlo trains on Renfe?
AVE is Renfe's reserved high-speed service with Standard and Comfort seat types and several fare options. Avlo is Renfe's low-cost high-speed service with its own fare and baggage conditions. Compare the exact train, seat, luggage allowance and included services rather than assuming that the rules are the same.
How far in advance can you book Renfe tickets?
The release window varies by service, date and timetable period. Search the official Renfe site or app when your dates are available, and book earlier when a popular departure or a lower restricted fare matters. Always compare the saving with the change conditions before paying.
What are the main fare and seat options on Renfe high-speed trains?
Renfe's AVE and long-distance options use Básico with a Standard seat, Elige Estándar with a Standard seat, Elige Confort with a Comfort seat, and Prémium with a Comfort seat on eligible journeys. The fare controls flexibility and included services, while the seat type controls the space and layout. Check the exact conditions because Prémium is not available on AVE international services between Spain and France.
What accessibility assistance does Renfe provide?
Adif Acerca provides free assistance for passengers with disabilities or reduced mobility, including help through the station and with boarding or leaving the train. Request it when buying your ticket or through the Renfe assistance channels, then check the deadline for your departure station: Renfe lists up to 30 minutes before departure at some permanent-service stations and up to 12 hours before departure at some ad-hoc stations.
What is the baggage allowance on Renfe high-speed trains?
On regular Renfe services, you can carry up to three pieces of hand luggage if their combined weight is no more than 25 kg or their combined dimensions are no more than 290 cm. Each piece can be up to 85 x 55 x 35 cm. Avlo has a stricter policy, so check the train type and current luggage terms before travelling with large bags, bikes or other equipment.
Which cities are linked by AVE routes in Spain?
Renfe's current AVE route map includes the main corridors from Madrid to Barcelona, València, Málaga, Seville and Alicante, plus routes through Córdoba and connections towards cities such as Granada and Murcia. It also shows international services between Barcelona and Lyon and between Madrid and Marseille. Check the live route result for your date because service patterns change.
Does an AVE ticket include an assigned seat?
Yes. AVE is a reserved service, so the ticket is tied to a named passenger, train and date and includes a coach and seat. Check those details when the ticket is issued and carry the identity document shown in the booking.
Can I use an Interrail or Eurail Pass on an AVE train?
Yes, but the pass does not replace the AVE seat reservation. Eurail states that reservations are mandatory and recommends arranging them early. Book the pass-holder reservation through the relevant reservation channel or an authorised Renfe sales point, and carry the pass, reservation and identity document together.
What is Renfe's Spain Rail Pass?
The Spain Rail Pass is a separate Renfe product for people resident outside Spain. It is personal and non-transferable, offers four, six, eight or ten journeys, and can be used on national long-distance trains including AVE. Each journey still needs to be validated by obtaining the ticket for the chosen route and train. Check the current terms before buying.
Can I change or cancel a Renfe ticket?
The answer depends on the fare and the train. Básico is the most restricted option, while Elige and eligible Prémium products can include more change or refund flexibility. Renfe's conditions and any add-ons must be checked at purchase, because they can vary by service and are not interchangeable with Avlo rules.
