Frequently asked questions

Where should I buy train tickets in Finland?

For a long-distance journey between Finnish cities, start with VR's journey search or the VR Matkalla app. Choose the departure first, then compare the fare's exchange and refund conditions before you pay. For a local trip in Helsinki, use the HSL Journey Planner and buy the zones that journey requires.

Do I need a separate ticket for the Helsinki Airport train?

Usually, yes. Helsinki Central is in HSL zone A and Helsinki Airport is in zone C, so a standalone airport trip needs an ABC ticket. A VR long-distance ticket does not automatically cover the local HSL leg unless an HSL single-ticket add-on is shown in your VR order.

Can I take a night train to Lapland?

Yes. VR night trains serve Rovaniemi, Kolari and Kemijärvi. Private cabins start from €49 and cabins with a shower from €74, but both the price and availability depend on the date and cabin type. Choose the railhead with your final bus, taxi or rental-car connection in mind.

Is an Interrail Pass worth it for Finland?

For a few fixed domestic journeys, normal VR tickets are usually simpler. Consider a pass when it also covers the rest of a wider European itinerary. If Finland is your country of residence, an Interrail Global Pass can cover only an outbound or return journey there, not ordinary domestic travel, and it does not include a night-train cabin.

Is there a train from Helsinki to St Petersburg?

No. The Allegro service ended on 28 March 2022, and Finland's land-border crossing points with Russia remain closed until further notice. Do not build an itinerary around old maps or booking pages that still show the route.
