VR is Finland's national railway operator, running almost all long-distance and regional passenger trains across the country from a network centred on Helsinki. If you're planning a Finnish rail trip, VR is the company you'll be booking with for nearly every domestic journey, from a short regional hop to a long-distance run up towards Lapland.
Long-distance travel splits into two main categories. InterCity trains are the backbone of the network, mostly double-decker coaches with Eko and Ekstra class seating, connecting Helsinki with towns and cities across the country. Pendolino trains are VR's tilting high-speed services, faster than InterCity on the same lines, running on routes such as Helsinki to Tampere, Oulu, Vaasa, Jyväskylä and Kuopio, with single-level coaches and Eco or Ekstra Calm class seating. A newer Pendolino Plus service runs the Helsinki to Turku route. Shorter connections feeding into the long-distance network run on railcars.
Seat reservations are the detail that trips people up, because the rule isn't the same on every train. On InterCity and Pendolino services, reservations are recommended rather than compulsory, so you can usually board without one. But an unreserved seat isn't guaranteed on a busy departure, so book ahead if your dates are fixed, especially in summer or around Finnish public holidays. Night trains work differently. VR runs overnight services from Helsinki to Rovaniemi, Kolari and Kemijärvi, plus a Turku to Rovaniemi service, marketed around the Lapland and Santa Claus routes. Reservations are required on all of these, because you're booking a specific seat or a berth in a sleeper carriage, not just a place on the train. Don't board a VR night train assuming your ticket alone gets you a bed.
Interrail and Eurail pass holders travel on VR's network like any other passenger, and the same reservation guidance applies on top of the pass: recommended on InterCity and Pendolino, required on night trains. Book night train reservations as early as you can once your dates are fixed, since sleeper capacity is limited and sells out well before ordinary seats do.
One assumption worth correcting before you plan a Nordic itinerary: there's no direct train between Finland and any neighbouring country. Helsinki connects to Stockholm and Tallinn by ferry instead, not rail, and Interrail and Eurail pass holders get a discount on several of these ferry routes, run by Tallink Silja, Viking Line and Eckerö Line. If your route plan has Finland linking straight into Sweden or the Baltics by train, build the ferry crossing into your schedule rather than assuming a rail connection exists.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a seat reservation on VR InterCity or Pendolino trains?
No, reservations are recommended but not compulsory on InterCity and Pendolino services. An unreserved seat isn't guaranteed on a busy departure though, so book ahead for summer travel or over Finnish public holidays.
Are reservations required on VR's night trains to Lapland?
Yes. VR's overnight services to Rovaniemi, Kolari and Kemijärvi require a reservation for every seat or berth, and sleeper capacity sells out well before ordinary seats do.
Can I take a train directly from Finland to Sweden or Estonia?
No, there is no direct rail line between Finland and its neighbours. Helsinki connects to Stockholm and Tallinn by ferry instead, and Interrail and Eurail pass holders get a discount on several of these crossings with Tallink Silja, Viking Line and Eckerö Line.
