Book Stockholm Central for almost every long-distance trip; use Stockholm City only for SL commuter trains named on your train itinerary.
Stockholm Central is the long-distance default
For almost every long-distance or international journey, book Stockholm Central. Timetables usually shorten the name to Stockholm C. Long-distance and regional trains, local connections and Arlanda Express all meet in the wider complex, so read the operator, train number and full station name before paying.
Stockholm City is the underground SL commuter station beneath the central area. Ordinary SJ, Snälltåget and VR long-distance trains leave from a different part of the complex. T-Centralen is the metro interchange. Follow the signs for the service on your ticket, then look at the live platform display when you reach the right level.
Stockholms södra is useful only when your train explicitly stops there and the Södermalm location suits your plans. Stockholm Odenplan handles SL commuter trains and the metro. Stockholms östra belongs to the separate Roslagsbanan network. A search for Stockholm alone can hide these differences. Open the full itinerary before booking.
Arlanda Airport has three different rail choices
Arlanda Express is the straightforward choice when speed matters most. It takes 18 minutes from Stockholm Central. At the airport, Arlanda South serves Terminals 2, 3 and 4, while Arlanda North serves Terminal 5. A flexible adult one-way ticket costs SEK 340, although campaign and group fares can be lower. Confirm the terminal and live fare before paying.
A regional or long-distance train through Arlanda Central makes more sense when it fits an onward journey to Uppsala or farther north. Arlanda Central is in SkyCity between Terminals 4 and 5; Arlanda Express does not use it. A SEK 157 station-passage fee applies when the ticket does not already include it. Compare the complete price, not only the rail fare.
The SL commuter train between Stockholm and Arlanda Central takes about 38 minutes. An adult single including the passage fee costs SEK 200. If you already hold a valid SL ticket, the passage supplement is SEK 157. Travellers under 18 do not pay it. For a slower alternative, take an SL train to Märsta and change to bus 583. Ordinary SL tickets cover that bus and there is no airport passage fee, but the change takes more time and effort with bags.
International trains need a complete itinerary check
Snälltåget's daily daytime train is the clearest direct option to Copenhagen Syd. The planned journey is about six hours, with low-demand seat fares from SEK 299. Other itineraries may involve a change in Malmö. Before booking, confirm the Copenhagen station, full stopping pattern and valid travel document.
SJ runs several direct high-speed trains between Stockholm Central and Oslo S on a normal day, taking under six hours. Popular departures can fill, so reserve the actual train before fixing an onward connection. Look for engineering work as the date approaches and carry the identity document required for the border crossing.
The direct Snälltåget daytime train to Hamburg takes a little over 11 hours and normally runs daily. Its Berlin night train operates on selected dates and also stops in Hamburg. You can book a seat, a berth in a shared compartment or a private compartment. Limited Berlin seat fares start at SEK 499, while a private compartment for two starts at SEK 1,999 on specified lower-demand dates. Review the operating date, planned engineering changes and live fare.
Book the accommodation you intend to sleep in. A seat is not a berth, and a shared berth does not provide a private compartment. Make sure the product name, passenger count and arrival date all match the overnight plan.
Domestic routes are easiest to compare by time and operator
Compare SJ and VR for Gothenburg. VR's direct high-speed journey takes a little over three and a half hours, but schedules and ticket conditions differ by departure. The useful comparison is the final fare, baggage rules, refund terms and arrival time, not the cheapest number on the first search screen.
Faster high-speed journeys to Malmö take about four and a half hours. Snälltåget's daytime pattern is around five and a half hours. A slower train can still be the better choice when its fare or departure time works better. Confirm who runs the service and whether a reservation is required because SJ and Snälltåget sell different products.
Uppsala has frequent Mälartåg and SL commuter alternatives. Mälartåg plans a half-hourly service, with extra trains during weekday peaks. The commuter train makes more stops and can use Arlanda Central. An ordinary SL ticket is not valid on every regional departure, so check the operator, route and ticket before boarding.
Tickets and classes depend on the operator
When changes or disruption support matter, buy from the company running the train. Comparison platforms are handy for finding alternatives, but the ticket issuer normally handles rebooking and refunds. Note the operator, sales channel and contact point before paying.
Compare the flexible ticket with the cheapest one. Swedish long-distance products differ in changeability, refund rights, passenger-name rules, baggage and seat choice. First class may mean a wider seat or an added service, depending on the operator and product. Read the conditions for the ticket in front of you.
At Stockholm Central, there is an SL customer centre. VR tickets are sold at the tourist information point in the main hall. Other transactions may require an operator app, website, customer service or ticket agent. Deal with a complicated pass reservation or ticket change before reaching the station if you can.
Rail passes do not replace reservations
Interrail and Eurail cover participating rail travel, but they do not complete every booking. Reservations are compulsory on SJ high-speed trains and every Snälltåget departure. A second-class SJ high-speed pass reservation is SEK 75; first class is SEK 165. These are reservation fees, not full fares.
Snälltåget prices pass-holder reservations by route, season and accommodation. A Copenhagen to Stockholm seat is SEK 49 in either season. A high-season Stockholm to Berlin seat is SEK 399. Berths and private compartments cost more, so select the exact route and accommodation before payment.
Secure the reservation before committing to a tight onward connection or accommodation. For a night train, book the actual berth or compartment you want. Travel with the pass, reservation and matching identity document together, and verify the train number and passenger details before leaving.
Centralen transfers need more time than the map suggests
Stockholm Central, Stockholm City, T-Centralen and Cityterminalen are linked through several levels, passages, escalators and lifts. They connect indoors, but they are not one platform area. Give yourself extra time when moving from an underground commuter train or the metro to a long-distance departure.
Use the live train number and platform, not a saved note. Trafikverket supplies the station's current departure information, and platforms can change. Take another look at the display after reaching the long-distance part of Stockholm Central.
Lockers, manual baggage storage, toilets, food outlets, passenger assistance and lounges are available in the station. Access and eligibility vary. The lockers are reachable only during station opening hours, while staffed baggage storage has shorter hours. Check the current conditions before relying on either for an early or late transfer.
The final city transfer depends on luggage and address
Walking works when the accommodation is close to Centralen and your bags are manageable. Cobbles, weather and the exact entrance can turn a short map distance into an awkward final leg. Look up the route to the actual address before setting off.
Take the metro from T-Centralen and SL commuter trains from Stockholm City. An adult SL single costs SEK 43 and lasts 75 minutes. Adult 24-hour and 72-hour travelcards cost SEK 180 and SEK 360. Activate or tap the right product before boarding, and make sure a later interchange falls within its validity.
Tram 7 is useful towards Djurgården. SL ferry 82 runs from Slussen through Skeppsholmen to Djurgården. With luggage, favour the option with fewer awkward changes. City works and events can move stops, so look at the live route before leaving the station.
For heavy bags, poor weather or a difficult address, use the quality-assured taxi rank outside the main Vasagatan entrance. You choose the company. Confirm its price basis before setting off. On SL, travelling without a valid ticket brings a SEK 1,850 supplementary charge plus the single fare.
Peak dates and winter conditions change the plan
Once your dates are firm, book compulsory reservations, berths and private compartments. High-season pass fees can cost more, and useful overnight accommodation often disappears before ordinary seats. Summer engineering work may also alter a route or replace a rail section with a bus. Check both directions before buying separate tickets.
Winter trips need more recovery time around a flight, ferry or separate ticket. Snow, wind and switch or track failures can disrupt several routes as delays spread. Read the operator's live update before leaving, and avoid the last possible connection if disruption would strand you.
Child rules vary by operator. Snälltåget requires a ticket for every child, including infants. VR lets a child under two travel free on an adult's lap, while SL has its own age and accompaniment rules. For a family or group, confirm the seats, reservations and passenger details for every leg before payment.
On the day, match the full Stockholm station name, operator and train number to the ticket. Leave enough time to reach the correct level of Centralen, then read the live display before boarding. That is how you avoid the expensive mistakes here: the wrong station, a missing reservation, an airport fee you did not expect or a connection that was too tight.

Frequently asked questions
Do children travel free on Arlanda Express?
Children aged 0 to 7 always travel free, subject to the operator's accompaniment rules. Those aged 8 to 17 travel free with someone aged 26 or over; otherwise they need the SEK 160 child ticket.
Can I use a contactless bank card for SL transport?
Yes. Tap the same Visa, Mastercard or American Express card or device throughout the 75-minute journey. Each physical card and digital wallet version counts separately, and one personal contactless card buys a ticket for only one traveller.
Can I buy a ticket on tram 7?
Yes. Tram 7 is the only SL tram where a conductor sells single tickets onboard. Buy before boarding when possible because the conductor does not give change for notes over SEK 100.
What time does Stockholm Central open?
The station halls open from 03:00 on weekdays and 04:00 at weekends. They close at 01:00 on weekdays, 01:30 on Saturday and 02:00 on Sunday. Check special-date hours before planning an overnight wait.
Can I buy the SL supplement to Uppsala in advance?
Yes. Buy the Uppsala or Knivsta add-on in the SL app, then activate it when you are ready to travel. Uppsala validity is 120 minutes and Knivsta validity is 90 minutes. Your Stockholm County journey must also be covered by an SL fare.
