Copenhagen has several useful rail stations. Book the exact named station for your train, because København H and Copenhagen Syd are not interchangeable.
Match the station to the exact train
København H is the default for most DSB long-distance journeys, but open the full journey details before paying. Copenhagen Syd, Copenhagen Airport, Nørreport, Østerport and Vesterport are separate stations. A city-only label is not enough.
The difference matters most on international trains. Snälltåget uses Copenhagen Syd for its daytime service from Hamburg through Copenhagen to Stockholm and for its Berlin night train. DSB EuroCityExpress and Railjet services towards Hamburg use København H. Check the full station name on the ticket again before leaving your accommodation.
Vesterport, Nørreport and Østerport can be useful when a local or regional train stops closer to your hotel. Choose one only when the exact train calls there and the stop saves you a city transfer.
Use København H for most DSB long-distance journeys
København H, also shown as Copenhagen Central, is the right station for most domestic InterCity and InterCityLyn trains. DSB EuroCityExpress and Railjet services towards Hamburg use it too. Metro lines M3 and M4, S-trains and regional trains connect here.
Tivoli Gardens is beside the station, which makes a useful street-level landmark. Inside, follow the train number on the departure board rather than walking to a familiar platform. Engineering work can shift international departure times or replace part of the journey with a bus.
Give yourself time to find the right part of the station. If the booking names a different Copenhagen stop, the local journey across the city is part of your connection. Do not squeeze it into a few minutes with luggage.
Use Copenhagen Syd for Snälltåget
Copenhagen Syd is the Copenhagen stop to check for Snälltåget. The daytime train links Hamburg, Copenhagen, Malmö and Stockholm, and the Berlin night train calls there too. Do not go to København H by habit.
The daytime service has run daily since 4 May 2026, although track maintenance can alter its times. The night train runs on selected dates rather than every night. Confirm the operating date, the Copenhagen Syd stop and any replacement transport before building accommodation around the trip.
Allow time for the city transfer if your hotel or another train is near København H. Check the local route and final departure before you set off.
Interrail and Eurail passes are valid on Snälltåget only with a paid reservation. Choose the required seat, berth or private compartment when you book. If overnight comfort matters, reserve it once your dates are fixed.
Choose the right airport link
Trains from Copenhagen Airport leave from Terminal 3. Take a regional or InterCity train when you want København H. The journey usually takes about 13 to 15 minutes, but late-night services and engineering work can change the pattern.
Metro M2 is better for stops on its own route, including Kongens Nytorv and Nørreport. It does not serve København H. Check your first city destination before following signs for Train or Metro, since the two options solve different journeys.
An adult three-zone single costs DKK 30 and covers the airport to central Copenhagen. Check the zones before boarding. If you expect several trips, compare that single with City Pass Small instead of paying separately each time.
Use Malmö as the simple Swedish connection
Öresundståg links København H and Copenhagen Airport with Malmö across the Øresund Bridge. København H to Malmö C usually takes about 35 to 40 minutes, with frequent direct trains. Check the live departure because engineering work and border controls can lengthen the trip.
Buy the ticket before boarding. Carry valid identification for the cross-border journey and review the current border-control advice before travel.
For Stockholm, compare the whole journey rather than searching only by city. Snälltåget uses Copenhagen Syd, while other itineraries may require a change in Malmö. Confirm the Copenhagen station, operator, reservation and total journey time before paying.
Treat Hamburg as the western gateway
The faster direct trains between København H and Hamburg Hbf take roughly 4 hours 40 minutes to 4 hours 45 minutes in the 2026 timetable. EuroCityExpress and Railjet services run on the route. Engineering work can alter times or replace part of the journey with a bus, so check the selected departure again the day before travel.
From 26 June to 16 August 2026, a seat reservation is compulsory between Denmark and Hamburg. Add it even when travelling with an Interrail or Eurail Pass. Outside that window, reserving is still sensible for a long or busy departure.
Hamburg is the practical interchange for many journeys from western Europe. Prefer a through-ticket when one is available because EU missed-connection rights apply to a journey sold that way. If you need separate tickets, leave a generous margin and read each operator's disruption policy.
Compare domestic fares and train types
DSB InterCityLyn is usually the faster domestic choice. Copenhagen to Odense takes about 1 hour 20 minutes, Aarhus about 2 hours 48 minutes and Aalborg about 4 hours 13 minutes on the faster trains. Confirm the category because ordinary InterCity services can take longer.
Orange starting fares are DKK 69 to Odense, DKK 119 to Aarhus and DKK 134 to Aalborg. These are limited advance fares tied to a specific departure, not the usual price of every train. Read the conditions before choosing the lowest amount.
Orange is non-refundable. Orange Fri is also tied to one departure but can be refunded until 30 minutes before departure. Choose Orange only when your plans are fixed. Consider Orange Fri or a Standard single when a late flight or uncertain connection could force a change.
Keep fares and reservations separate
A DSB seat reservation holds the named seat on the selected train, but it is not a travel ticket. You still need a valid fare for the journey. This is an easy detail to miss when the two products appear in the same booking flow.
The same distinction matters with rail passes. Check pass validity first, then find out whether the train needs a separate reservation. Snälltåget requires one, and the Denmark to Hamburg summer rule still applies when the pass covers the underlying journey.
Use the operator running the train for the final check. DSB, Snälltåget and Swedish operators do not share one reservation rule or sales channel. A reservation for one service does not cover another.
Choose local tickets by the number of trips
An adult two-zone single in central Copenhagen costs DKK 24. The airport journey normally needs a three-zone single at DKK 30. City Pass Small costs DKK 100 for 24 hours and covers zones 1 to 4, including the airport, on buses, trains and the Metro.
For one airport journey and little other transport, single tickets usually cost less. City Pass Small makes more sense when several local trips fall within its 24-hour validity. Count the journeys you will actually make and confirm the zones before buying.
Have the ticket active before boarding and keep it available for inspection. The costly mistake is buying the right product for the wrong zones or validity period.

Frequently asked questions
How do I reach Copenhagen Syd from central Copenhagen?
Metro M4 and S-trains stop at Copenhagen Syd. Budget extra time when your hotel or onward train is close to København H.
Does an Öresundståg ticket include local transport in Copenhagen and Malmö?
It can. A cross-border ticket may cover specified Copenhagen zones and one connecting trip in the Swedish city zone. Read the validity shown for your ticket.
How much does a DSB seat reservation cost?
A standard reservation costs DKK 30 on InterCity, InterCityLyn and some regional trains. It secures the named seat but does not replace the travel ticket.
Where can I buy local Copenhagen tickets?
Use the Rejsebillet app or an accepted station ticket machine. Buy before boarding and make sure an app ticket is active for the correct zones.
Is a DSB Standard single tied to one departure?
No. A Standard single is route-specific but can be used on another eligible connection during the ticket day. Check that the alternative follows the route on the ticket.
