Öresundståg links Copenhagen and Østerport with Malmö and southern Sweden, making it a practical regional train for cross-border trips.

The important distinction is that Öresundståg is a network and passenger brand, not just one long-distance route. It covers services in six southern Swedish counties and Denmark. From 14 December 2025, VR Sverige AB operates and maintains the service under contract, while Öresundståg AB coordinates the shared regional system owned by the participating regions.

Öresundståg network

The network runs from Gothenburg, Kalmar and Karlskrona in the north to Malmö, Copenhagen and Østerport in the south. It serves stations across Blekinge, Halland, Kalmar, Kronoberg, Skåne and Västra Götaland, together with the Copenhagen area in Denmark. Exact stops vary by service, so use the official timetable for your date instead of assuming that every train calls at every station.

Öresundståg is the direct regional operator on the Copenhagen to Gothenburg rail corridor. Longer journeys may combine Öresundståg with another operator. For example, Copenhagen to Oslo is a multi-leg itinerary with an Öresundståg leg to Gothenburg and a separate operator for the onward journey. Tickets and booking

Buy through the official Öresundståg booking service, a regional transport channel, or a ticket machine before boarding. The official ticket information covers public transport in Sweden and stations where Öresundståg calls in Denmark. For other Danish destinations, check DSB. Some products include local public transport or a Resplus connection, so read the conditions for the exact ticket you are buying.

Current Öresundståg terms give some Denmark-origin tickets flexibility on the same line within three hours before or after the time shown. Other tickets, including some journeys starting in Sweden, can be tied to a specified departure. Treat the rule as a ticket condition, not a general promise that every ticket works on every train.

If you are comparing a combined international itinerary, identify which operator runs each leg. A reseller may display several operators together, but the fare, change rules and missed-connection protection can differ between separate tickets.

Classes and onboard experience

Öresundståg trains offer first and second class. The official train information also lists a quiet zone, an animal section, wheelchair spaces, power outlets and WiFi. Amenities can vary with the train formation, so travellers who need a specific accessibility feature should check before departure.

Öresundståg does not currently sell seat reservations. The operator's travel notice says passengers choose a free seat in the class covered by their ticket. If you are travelling at a busy commuter time, arrive with enough time to find a seat, and check the latest operator notice if the policy changes.

Bikes need their own check. The operator says a train can carry up to six bikes, there is no bike reservation, and a bike ticket is needed for the cross-border Malmö to Copenhagen journey. Bikes are not accepted on replacement buses, so check disruption information before relying on a bike connection.

Crossing between Denmark and Sweden

Carry valid photo identification when travelling across the Øresund. Öresundståg advises passengers to check current border information because controls and document requirements can change. Öresundståg is the regional network and public-facing service coordinated through the southern Swedish and Danish regional system. The current official operator page says VR Sverige AB has been responsible for operating and maintaining the service since 14 December 2025. That means the service brand and regional ownership structure are distinct from the company contracted to run the trains.

Check the official timetable for the exact date, especially around rail works, holidays and cross-border disruption. For a simple Copenhagen to Gothenburg trip, compare a direct Öresundståg service with any faster connection that requires a change in Malmö. For a journey beyond the network, allow time for the operator change and verify whether you hold one through-ticket or separate tickets.
