Pågatågen

Pågatågen is the purple regional train network Skånetrafiken, Region Skåne's public transport authority, runs across the county. It is not a long-distance or international operator. It is the workhorse of Skåne's daily travel, carrying commuters and day-trippers between the county's towns and cities.

What Pågatågen is

The first Pågatåg ran on 9 January 1983. Region Skåne owns 99 Pågatåg trains, and the network calls at 77 stations across the region. Ridership keeps climbing: 2025 was the first year it passed 27 million journeys, up around 4.6 percent on 2024. The distinctive purple carriages are one of the more recognisable sights on the Skåne countryside.

Where it runs

Pågatågen operates a web of regional lines radiating from Malmö and other Skåne hubs. One corridor worth knowing is Malmö to Ystad, which moved from hourly to half-hourly service in a recent timetable change. PågatågenExpress adds faster services on the Svedala-Malmö and Trelleborg-Malmö stretches. The network has also grown onto the Söderåsbanan line, where three new stations opened: Billesholm, Kågeröd and Svalöv. From Malmö C, the ride takes about 48 minutes to Billesholm, 41 minutes to Kågeröd and 34 minutes to Svalöv.

Tickets

Skånetrafiken handles ticketing for Pågatågen the same way it does for its buses and trams: through its app, website or ticket machines, not on board the train. Buy and activate your ticket before you step onto the platform. Travelling without a valid, activated ticket risks a penalty fee, as with any Skånetrafiken service.

Practical notes

Trafikverket carries out periodic engineering works on the lines Pågatågen uses, which can mean replacement buses on named stretches for a weekend at a time. If you are travelling on an affected corridor, check the current disruption notices for your date before you set off.
