SL Pendeltåg is the commuter rail network of Stockholm County (pendeltåg is Swedish for commuter train). It is part of SL, the county's public transport system, and runs in collaboration with SJ. The network has 54 stations, from Nynäshamn and Gnesta in the south to Bålsta and Uppsala in the north.

Lines and stations

Services are numbered 40, 41, 43, 43X and 48:

  • Line 40: Uppsala, Arlanda, Stockholm City and Södertälje centrum
  • Line 41: Märsta, Stockholm City and Södertälje centrum
  • Line 43: Bålsta, Kungsängen, Stockholm City, Västerhaninge and Nynäshamn
  • Line 43X: Kallhäll, Stockholm City, Västerhaninge and Nynäshamn
  • Line 48: Södertälje centrum and Gnesta

The 43X skips Trångsund, Skogås, Vega and Jordbro. Stations are marked with a large white J on their signs, and almost all of them connect to local buses. Trains have run all the way to Uppsala, via Arlanda and Knivsta, since 2012.

Tickets and touching in

An SL ticket covers the commuter trains as well as the metro, buses, trams and local ferries in Stockholm County. You can tap a contactless Visa, Mastercard or American Express card, buy a ticket in the SL app, or load tickets onto the green SL smart card, which costs SEK 50 and can be reused. A single ticket is valid for 75 minutes on all SL services and costs SEK 43 for an adult.

Nobody sells tickets on board and cash is not accepted, so buy before you get on. Larger stations have staffed ticket booths that sell most SL tickets. At the automatic barriers of larger stations you touch in with your ticket or card. Smaller stations may have no barriers at all, only an SL ticket post where you touch in before you step on the train. There is no touching out. Travelling without a valid ticket brings a penalty fare of SEK 1,850 plus the price of a single ticket.

Arlanda and Uppsala

Line 40 stops at Arlanda C, the airport station. Passing between the platforms and the terminals costs a passage fee of SEK 157 for anyone over 18, on top of an SL ticket. A single ticket with the fee included costs SEK 200 for an adult. SL tickets do not work on the Arlanda Express, which SL does not run.

Between Uppsala and Arlanda, UL tickets apply, and south of Arlanda you need an SL ticket. A through trip between Uppsala and Stockholm therefore takes a combined UL and SL ticket, sold in the SL and UL apps and at the staffed ticket booths of larger stations. Uppsala to Arlanda takes about 18 minutes, and Uppsala to central Stockholm about 55.

Hours and frequency

Trains start running between 4 and 5 in the morning, and services continue until about 1.30 at night. Frequency depends on the section, but trains run at least every 30 minutes. In central Stockholm, where several lines overlap, daytime departures are only a few minutes apart.

Every train stops at every station on its line, except a few peak-hour expresses that skip smaller stations; the timetable and platform signs show which trains these are. In summer you open the doors yourself with the button beside them.
