Snälltåget

Snälltåget is a private long-distance and night train operator based in Malmö. It sits outside SJ and the rest of the state rail network. Its backbone is the daily day train linking Copenhagen, Malmö and Stockholm, with seasonal and night routes reaching further afield.

Routes

The daily day train runs year-round between Copenhagen, Malmö and Stockholm, calling at Malmö, Lund, Eslöv, Hässleholm, Alvesta, Nässjö, Linköping, Norrköping and Södertälje. From 4 May 2026, that same day-train product extends to Hamburg, so you can travel Hamburg to Stockholm via Copenhagen and Malmö on one operator. A separate night train links Germany (Hamburg, and on some dates Dresden) with Berlin, Copenhagen, Malmö and Stockholm. Since 15 June 2026, Snälltåget also runs daily direct trains from Malmö to Oslo via Gothenburg.

The mountain routes are seasonal, not year-round. The night train to Åre, Jämtland and Härjedalen runs from Malmö via Stockholm in summer and autumn (24 June to 4 October 2026) and again in winter (16 December 2026 to 2 May 2027). A separate seasonal night train also runs to and from Austria for winter Alps travel. Treat both as fixed-window services and check the current dates before you plan around them.

Onboard and tickets

Onboard, the restaurant carriage Krogen serves breakfast, hot meals, beer, wine and non-alcoholic drinks, plus a self-service kiosk for coffee and snacks. Book your table when you buy your ticket. On certain Stockholm to Malmö departures, you can also book a private compartment for up to six people.

The cheapest day-train fares start from around SEK 149 one way between Stockholm and Malmö, and around SEK 299 one way between Stockholm and Copenhagen, on lower-demand departures booked two to three weeks ahead and away from Fridays and Sundays. Discounts run to 25 percent off for groups travelling together, around 20 percent for youth aged 16 to 25, 25 percent for students with a valid student ID, and around 20 percent for seniors aged 60 and over. Tickets bought on snalltaget.se can be changed up to 24 hours before departure, and a refundable fare is available for an extra fee.

A connecting bus service, Snälltåget on the road, links Alvesta, Växjö, Tingsryd, Karlshamn, Ronneby and Karlskrona into the rail network.

Travelling with Interrail or Eurail

Interrail and Eurail Global Passes are valid on Snälltåget, but every journey still needs a paid seat reservation, booked through the online booking, and only one-way trips are possible this way. Reservation prices are in SEK and vary by route, comfort level and season. As orientation, low-season 2026 seat reservations start from SEK 49 on most domestic routes, rising to around SEK 199 for night trains to Germany or Austria, with berths and private compartments costing more; high-season prices climb further, for example SEK 399 for a seat reservation between Stockholm and Berlin. Check the exact fare for your date and comfort level when you book.

Interrail One Country Passes come with route-specific rules here: the Sweden pass covers domestic Swedish travel and, during 2026 only, cross-border trips to and from Copenhagen; the Norway pass is not valid at all, since Snälltåget does not permit domestic Norwegian travel; the Nordic pass covers Denmark and Sweden plus cross-border journeys to and from Norway. On the seasonal Austria trains, Interrail normally covers a seat only, with berths and compartments sold separately where available.
