Norrtåg

Norrtåg is the regional train operator connecting northern Sweden's coast with its inland towns and mountain gateways. It handles everyday regional and commuter travel across a large, sparsely populated area, not international long-distance journeys, though one line does reach the Finnish border.

The lines

Norrtåg's network is built from six lines: Luleå-Haparanda, Luleå-Kiruna, Sundsvall-Storlien (via Östersund), Umeå-Luleå, Umeå-Sundsvall and Umeå-Vännäs/Hällnäs. Together they link the coastal cities of Sundsvall, Umeå and Luleå with inland hubs such as Östersund, and reach toward Storlien on the Norwegian border and Kiruna in the far north. In August 2026, cross-border passenger service between Sweden and Finland resumed at Haparanda after a 38 year gap.

A few stations are worth knowing along the way. Sundsvall is a junction where the Ådalsbanan and Mittbanan lines meet. Örnsköldsvik C is the gateway station for the Höga Kusten coast and Skuleskogen National Park. Östersund C and Östersund V serve the Jämtland capital. Luleå C and Luleå Notviken sit near the UNESCO World Heritage site of Gammelstad kyrkstad, and Umeå C and Umeå Ö serve Umeå.

Tickets and discounts

Tickets and period passes are bought through the Norrtåg website's search and booking tool. Two children under 16 travel free automatically when booked with an adult. If the accompanying adult already holds a discounted fare, such as youth, student, senior or pensioner, up to two children under 7 travel free. Children of period-ticket holders need no separate ticket. Groups of 10 or more travellers must book as a group rather than individually.

Travelling with Interrail or Eurail

Interrail and Eurail passes are valid on every Norrtåg regional train. Activate your journey in the Rail Planner app before boarding to generate your ticket as a QR code; saved trips sit in My Trip until you move them into My Pass, which becomes your actual ticket. Norrtåg does not require a compulsory seat reservation, but you can book one anyway if you want to guarantee a seat, for example through SJ, usually the most flexible option for travel in northern Sweden. Show your QR code alongside photo ID or your passport at ticket inspection. If you need accessibility assistance, such as a ramp or low step-in, contact Norrtåg customer service ahead of your journey.
