SJ is Sweden's state-owned main passenger train operator and the first place most travellers should check for long-distance train travel in Sweden. Use SJ for major domestic routes such as Stockholm to Gothenburg, Stockholm to Malmo, Stockholm to Sundsvall and Umea, plus cross-border journeys to Copenhagen and Oslo.

Where SJ trains go

SJ is most useful when your trip starts, ends or crosses through Stockholm. The strongest SJ corridors are the national trunk routes that connect the capital with western, southern and northern Sweden.

The most common visitor routes are Stockholm-Gothenburg, Stockholm-Malmo, Stockholm-Copenhagen, Stockholm-Sundsvall and Umea, and Stockholm-Oslo. SJ also runs important northbound services toward Lulea, Kiruna, Abisko and Narvik, including overnight journeys that make Swedish Lapland practical without flying.

For southern Sweden and Denmark, SJ is one part of a wider rail network. A Stockholm-Copenhagen journey may involve SJ for the long Swedish section, while local travel around Malmo, Lund and Copenhagen can involve regional operators. If your route crosses an operator boundary, compare the full itinerary carefully before paying.

Train types

SJ high-speed trains are the right choice for most long intercity journeys. X 2000 and SJ high-speed services run at up to 200 km/h where the route allows, with reserved seating, power, Wi-Fi on many departures and onboard food on many longer trips. They are the trains most travellers mean when they search for SJ trains between Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmo, Copenhagen or Oslo.

SJ 3000 and InterCity trains handle many long-distance services where speed is still important but the route, stops or rolling stock differ from the flagship X 2000. Expect a conventional long-distance train experience: assigned departure, luggage areas, toilets, power on many trains and a quieter ride than a busy regional service.

Regional trains are better for shorter hops and commuter-style journeys. They may have fewer onboard services, and not every regional train has the same seating, food or Wi-Fi setup. For short journeys, the practical question is less about train type and more about whether your ticket is valid on the exact operator and departure you plan to use.

SJ night trains are useful for long northbound journeys and selected international trips. For northern Sweden, the Arctic route toward Lulea, Kiruna, Abisko and Narvik is the headline journey, with the overnight trip taking around 19 hours. As checked in June 2026, SJ EuroNight service to Hamburg and Berlin is time-sensitive: SJ's own final EuroNight departure is scheduled for 31 August 2026, so autumn 2026 and later travellers should confirm the operator and timetable before planning around that train.

How to book SJ tickets

Book SJ tickets before boarding, either through SJ's website, the SJ app or a reseller that clearly shows the same train, departure and ticket conditions. Sweden is not a good country for turning up and expecting to buy a long-distance ticket from staff on the train.

For most travellers, booking direct with SJ is the cleanest option when the journey is operated by SJ. It gives you the easiest access to seat selection, ticket changes, journey status, receipts, special seating requests and support if disruption affects your train. Resellers can still be useful when you are comparing a multi-country itinerary or combining several operators, but the ticket conditions must be checked before you pay.

SJ prices are dynamic. The cheapest tickets are usually best when your plans are firm, while flexible or refundable options cost more because they protect you if your plans change. Do not choose only by price: check whether the ticket can be rebooked or refunded, whether it is tied to one departure, and whether your traveller category or rail pass has been applied correctly.

If you are using Interrail or Eurail, treat the reservation as a separate task. SJ high-speed train reservations are required for pass travel, and popular departures can sell out. Add your pass details during the booking flow and confirm that the final product is a pass reservation, not a full-price ticket.

On board

SJ's long-distance trains are generally comfortable, with 1st and 2nd class seating, luggage storage, toilets and space to work or relax. On X 2000, SJ 3000 and double-decker trains, free Wi-Fi is available; expect the connection to be better for messaging and browsing than for heavy streaming on remote sections.

Food depends on the route and train type. Many high-speed, InterCity and night-train services have a bistro or onboard food offer, while shorter regional trips may have little or no catering. For a long journey, bring water and a snack even when a bistro is expected, especially late in the day or during disruption.

First class is worth considering on longer trips if you value quieter seating, more space or included extras. Some morning first-class journeys include breakfast, and lounge access can apply at Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmo depending on ticket type or SJ Prio status. Check the exact train and fare before assuming every first-class ticket includes the same benefits.

SJ Prio is SJ's loyalty programme. It matters most if you will travel repeatedly in Sweden, because points and status benefits are more useful over several journeys than for a single holiday transfer.

Luggage, bikes, pets and accessibility

Pack for normal train storage: overhead racks, under-seat space and larger luggage areas near carriage ends. Keep valuables with you and avoid bags you cannot lift or move through a busy carriage.

Bicycles need more planning. On SJ, a bike generally needs to be folded or disassembled and packed in a bike bag before boarding. Do not assume a full-size assembled bike can come with you just because the route looks regional or scenic.

Pets are allowed on SJ under train-specific rules. Book a pet-permitted area or compartment where required, and check the rule before travel if you have a large dog, several animals or a night-train cabin.

Accessible travel is possible on most SJ services, but it works best when arranged before departure. Wheelchair spaces can be booked on almost all SJ trains, and assistance can be arranged for boarding or leaving the train. If you need a lift, wheelchair space, assistance dog space or help changing trains, sort it out before travel day rather than at the platform.

Delays and train status

SJ reported 87% punctuality for its Swedish traffic in 2024. That is useful context, but it does not remove the need to check your specific train. Swedish rail can be affected by winter weather, infrastructure work, rolling-stock issues and cross-border disruptions.

Before leaving for the station, check the SJ app, your booking reference or the traffic-information tool for your route. For international journeys, check each operator in the itinerary. A delay on the Swedish section can affect a Copenhagen, Oslo, Hamburg or Berlin connection, and replacement instructions are easier to handle while you still have time to adjust.

When SJ is the right choice

Choose SJ when you want the simplest long-distance train option inside Sweden, especially between Stockholm and Gothenburg, Malmo, Copenhagen, Sundsvall, Umea or Oslo. It is also a strong choice for travellers who want a direct booking relationship with the operator handling the train.

Compare other operators when your journey is mainly regional, when a reseller finds a multi-operator connection, or when you are travelling on a route where Snalltaget, Vy, DSB, VR or a local transport authority is the actual operator. The useful habit is to identify the train operator before paying, then book through the channel that gives you the clearest ticket conditions and disruption support.

For most visitors, SJ is not complicated once the basics are clear: book before boarding, reserve pass travel where required, check status before travel, and treat pets, bikes and accessibility needs as booking details rather than last-minute platform decisions.
