Use Göteborg Central for most stays: it links rail, local transport and onward connections. Check your final address and Västtrafik’s live plan.
Choose Göteborg Central for the city centre
Göteborg Central is the default that makes sense for a central hotel, a first visit or a change between long-distance and regional rail. The station sits beside the city’s main coach-terminal area, and local tram and bus connections spread out from the central district. That combination is more useful than simply picking the stop that appears first in a journey search.
There are occasions when another stop is better. A hotel, meeting or onward train outside the centre can make a regional station more convenient, especially if it removes a backtrack with luggage. Check the final address before booking. The mistake to avoid is treating “Gothenburg” as one interchangeable destination: a few minutes saved on the train can turn into an awkward local transfer.
If you are arriving on a long-distance service, allow enough time to leave the platform area, find the local stop or terminal and orient yourself. This is particularly important when tickets are separate. A tight connection can be fragile even when the two services look close together in a planner.
Change between train, tram and coach without guessing
The central station area works as a transport interchange, but the modes are not the same thing. Trains use Göteborg Central; coaches, including many airport buses, use Nils Ericson Terminalen; trams and buses have their own stops in the surrounding centre. Decide which mode completes your journey before you buy or validate the local ticket.
Västtrafik covers trains, trams, buses and boats in its regional network. That does not mean a long-distance rail ticket automatically covers an onward Västtrafik journey. Look at the ticket you hold and the local leg you need. If the journey was sold as one through ticket, read its terms; if it was assembled from separate bookings, assume you must check the local fare and conditions yourself.
For a central address, walking may be simpler than adding a short tram ride with bags. For an address beyond the centre, use the Västtrafik planner to compare the tram, bus or local-train option from where you actually arrive. Planning that leg in advance avoids standing at the interchange trying to work out whether a nearby stop belongs to your service.
Airport and regional arrivals
Göteborg Landvetter Airport is connected to the central area by airport bus, with Nils Ericson Terminalen one of the central stops. It is not a rail transfer at the airport. If you are flying in and intend to continue by train, build the airport bus and the station change into the itinerary, and leave margin for traffic, luggage and the walk through the terminal area.
Gothenburg is also reached by long-distance and regional trains. Check services from Stockholm, Oslo and Copenhagen, together with regional Västtrafik trains. Treat those routes as starting points, not a timetable: the operator, route and calling pattern can differ by departure. Check the live journey planner before choosing a connection or assuming that a particular train will serve a certain stop.
When comparing routes, favour the arrival that leaves a workable final transfer over the one with a slightly shorter advertised journey. This matters more if the first ticket cannot easily be changed, you are travelling from an airport, or the next service is booked separately.
Tickets and live disruption checks
Use Västtrafik’s journey planner and current network information for local travel. Its tickets can apply across trains, buses, trams and boats, but the right choice depends on the route and the zones involved. Check the ticket’s scope before boarding rather than relying on a map, an old price or what another traveller used.
Gothenburg’s rail and street network is subject to works, so the final plan should always come from live information. A route that is sensible in a general map may have a diversion, a replacement bus or a different stop on the day. Check again shortly before leaving, especially if your connection is important.
Travellers who need assistance should check Västtrafik’s current support arrangements early. Companion assistance at Göteborg Central and Nils Ericson Terminalen is subject to current booking conditions. The booking deadline and eligibility rules matter, so do not leave this to the platform.
Before you travel
Confirm the final address first, then choose the arrival station and local mode around it. Check whether your long-distance ticket includes anything beyond the train, allow a real interchange margin if you need the coach terminal or a tram, and run the route again in Västtrafik’s live planner before you depart. If you are arriving from Landvetter, remember that the central connection is by airport bus. Those checks make the city’s compact interchange work in your favour rather than becoming the difficult part of the journey.

Frequently asked questions
Which station should I use in Gothenburg?
Göteborg Central is the default for most central stays and rail connections. Choose another stop only when it clearly makes the final journey to your address easier.
Is Nils Ericson Terminalen the same as Göteborg Central?
No. It is the nearby central coach terminal. Use it for the relevant bus or airport-bus service, and allow time to move between it and the rail station.
Is there a train from Göteborg Landvetter Airport to the city centre?
The usual central connection is an airport bus, not a train. Check the live airport-bus timetable and allow time for the station-area transfer if you continue by rail.
Can I use a Västtrafik ticket on trams and local trains?
Västtrafik has tickets for trains, buses, trams and boats in the region. Check the route and ticket conditions for the journey you are actually taking, especially if it follows a separate long-distance booking.
Should I check for disruption before travelling?
Yes. Works can change routes and stops. Recheck the journey in Västtrafik’s planner shortly before you leave, rather than relying on a static map or an older itinerary.
