Kiruna station is the only railway station for Kiruna. It is a temporary station outside the town, and a free shuttle bus runs from it to the new centre. Norrtåg trains come from Luleå, and from Stockholm you change at Boden onto an SJ day train.

Which station to use

Kiruna station sits several kilometres from the town centre; the straight-line distance is about 5 km, so plan on a bus rather than a walk, especially in winter.

A permanent station south of Lombololeden is planned but not built; Trafikverket has set no construction start.

Trains to Kiruna

From Stockholm you take the SJ night train and change at Boden. Until 12 December 2026 the night train leaves Stockholm Central at 18:12 every day and reaches Boden at 05:42. There you change to SJ InterCity train 98, a day train with a bistro, which leaves Boden at 06:07 and arrives in Kiruna at 09:10, about 15 hours after you left Stockholm. Sleeper cars do not run north of Boden this autumn. Going south, train 99 leaves Kiruna at 18:34 and reaches Boden at 21:49; the night train leaves Boden at 22:18 and arrives in Stockholm at 10:13. SJ's new contract, which starts in December 2026, brings back a through night train between Stockholm and Narvik.

Norrtåg runs line 30 from Luleå through Boden and Gällivare to Kiruna, with three trains each way on weekdays and two on Saturdays and Sundays. Until 12 December 2026 the trains leave Luleå at 06:08 (Monday to Saturday), 11:09 (not Saturdays) and 16:34 (daily), and reach Kiruna at 09:49, 15:02 and 21:06. From Kiruna they leave at 05:50 (Monday to Saturday, to Boden only), 10:46 (daily) and 16:10 (not Saturdays). The journey from Luleå takes 3 hours 40 minutes to 4 hours 30 minutes. Until 15 November 2026, daytime track work between Luleå and Boden puts some journeys on a replacement bus for that stretch, with the change to the train at Boden.

Trains 98 and 99 also run between Luleå and Narvik every day, so they are the day trains to Abisko and Narvik.

From the station into town

Boreal runs the free shuttle for Kiruna municipality, every day of the year. From the station it calls at Adolf Hedinsvägen, OK Parken, Sporthallen, Sjukhuset (the hospital) and ICA Kvantum, and ends at Stadshustorget in the new centre. The ride takes 15 to 20 minutes. You can use it without a train ticket.

From 5 October to 12 December 2026 the bus leaves Stadshustorget at 05:20 (Monday to Saturday), 09:00, 10:15, 15:40 (not Saturdays) and 17:30. The 17:30 bus is the one for the 18:34 SJ train, so it leaves more than an hour before that train. From the station it leaves at 09:30, 10:35 (Monday to Saturday), 15:15, 18:05 and 21:25. Buses leave on time even when a train is late. If your train reaches Kiruna late and the bus has gone, it comes back to the station as soon as it can. Nothing comes back for you in town: miss the bus at Stadshustorget and you miss the train.

Stadshustorget is where you change to the airport bus and the regional buses. Local city buses are a separate, paid service: an adult single costs SEK 32, paid by card on board.

Onward from Kiruna

Länstrafiken Norrbotten bus 501 goes to Jukkasjärvi and the Icehotel, about 18 km from Kiruna. You pay by card on board, and weekend departures are limited.

The airport bus is run by Boreal for Kiruna municipality. It is timed to scheduled flights, so in October 2026 there is no bus on Saturdays. It takes about 7 minutes from the airport to Stadshustorget. An adult single costs SEK 120, paid by card on board.

Länstrafiken line 91 to Abisko runs only from February to May and June to September; outside those months, use the daily SJ train.

Works on the Malmbanan this autumn

Trafikverket will close the line between Boden and Gällivare, and between Boden and Luleå, for part of week 46 (9 to 15 November 2026) to connect a new interlocking. Every train to Kiruna from the south uses that section, including SJ train 98. The exact hours had not been published by early October and no replacement buses had been announced, so avoid fixing a trip in that week.

Tickets

SJ tickets are sold on sj.se. Norrtåg tickets are sold on norrtag.se and by phone on 010-149 69 69. You cannot buy a ticket on board a Norrtåg train, so buy before you board. Tickets are not valid across the two operators, so buy each leg from the operator that runs it.

Rail passes and reservations

As of October 2026, an Interrail pass covers both the SJ and the Norrtåg trains to Kiruna. Norrtåg trains need no reservation, and a seat reservation is optional on SJ InterCity trains. The SJ night train between Stockholm and Boden always needs a reservation: about €3.50 (SEK 40) for a seat, €22 (SEK 250) for a bed in a 6-bed couchette, €36 (SEK 405) for a bed in a 3-bed sleeper and €71 (SEK 800) for a private sleeper cabin. The SJ train on to Narvik is covered by a Global Pass and by a Sweden One Country Pass, but not by a Norway One Country Pass.

Traps to avoid

  • Missing the shuttle. The last bus to the station leaves Stadshustorget at 17:30 for the 18:34 train, and no bus waits for a delayed train.
  • Planning to pay on a Norrtåg train. Tickets cannot be bought on board.
  • Expecting to sleep all the way. Until 12 December 2026 the sleeper from Stockholm turns off to Luleå at Boden, and the last three hours to Kiruna are in a seated day train.
