Gothenburg to Stockholm by train

Direct trains link Gothenburg and Stockholm in as little as 3 hours 27 minutes, run by two competing operators through most of the day. The exact minutes shift with each timetable update and by the specific departure, so treat any single figure here as the current pattern rather than a fixed number.

Gothenburg to Stockholm train at a glance

This is not a one-operator route. SJ is the larger, longer-established national carrier and still sets the pace with its red X2000 and newer SJ3000 sets, but VR Snabbtåg, the successor to MTR Express under Finland's state-owned VR Group, runs a genuinely separate direct service on the same corridor with its own timetable, pricing and booking site. No third operator runs a direct service here: FlixTrain, the other open-access challenger that once competed on this route, pulled out of Sweden entirely in 2024 and has not returned. Checking both SJ and VR before you book is worth the extra minute, since neither is automatically the cheaper or faster option on a given day.

Which operator to book

SJ's X2000 and SJ3000 trains cluster roughly hourly through the day, each with a bistro car, wifi and, on SJ3000, level boarding. SJ also runs slower direct SJ Regional services on the same route, useful only if a fast departure does not fit your schedule, since they take around 5 hours 15 minutes rather than the high speed trains' 3 hours 30 or so.

VR Snabbtåg runs its own direct departures from early morning (05:25 out of Gothenburg on a normal weekday) into the evening, each typically 3 hours 27 to 38 minutes. Its Plus, or 1 Class Plus, seating adds at-seat meal service on top of the free wifi that comes with any ticket, and students get an ongoing 20% discount rather than a limited-time offer. In the 2026 Svenskt Kvalitetsindex survey, VR was rated Sweden's most satisfied passenger transport company, a detail worth knowing if service reputation matters as much as the timetable.

Whichever you book, keep the ticket for that operator only. SJ and VR Snabbtåg run fully separate booking systems: VR's trains cannot be booked, searched or combined on SJ's site, and SJ's trains do not appear on VR's. An SJ ticket will not be accepted on a VR Snabbtåg train and the reverse is also true. If you are travelling on a Eurail or Interrail pass, note that it is not valid on VR Snabbtåg at all; it works on SJ's trains, but SJ's X2000 and SJ3000 still charge a separate seat reservation fee on top of the pass.

Stations

Both operators depart from and arrive at the same two stations: Göteborg Central in Gothenburg and Stockholm Central. Neither city needs a cross-town transfer to reach the train, which is one less thing to plan around compared with a route split across multiple stations in either city.

Tickets, fares and booking

VR Snabbtåg's own booking site lists fares from 219 SEK one way across most days in September 2026, though the fare calendar shows real swings, from a low of 209 SEK to a high of 769 SEK depending on the date, so the floor fare is not on every train or every day. VR Snabbtåg's site currently only takes bookings on this route through 11 December 2026, with later dates shown as not yet open for sale, so confirm your date is bookable before you plan too far ahead.

SJ prices this route dynamically, like most national operators. A same day check on its own site for 3 September 2026 found second class fares from 475 SEK one way on its fastest X2000 train; SJ's advance fares booked further out are typically cheaper than that same day price, so 475 SEK is a floor for a last minute booking rather than a like for like comparison with VR's month wide low. Price both operators' sites for your actual travel date rather than assuming either one is cheaper by default.

Check before you travel

The direct line between Gothenburg and Alingsås closes completely for engineering work on a recurring series of weekends through the rest of 2026, normally from 22:00 on Friday to 14:00 on Sunday, with services replaced by buses or rerouted via Borås or Vänersborg and journeys stretching well past their usual length. Per Trafikverket, the Swedish infrastructure manager, the affected weekends this autumn are 4 to 6 September, 18 to 20 September, 2 to 4 October, 16 to 18 October, 13 to 15 November, 27 to 29 November and 11 to 13 December, with a similar pattern continuing into 2027. Both SJ and VR Snabbtåg are affected: a Saturday check on VR's own site during one of these closures found only 4 direct-sale departures instead of the usual 9, each taking 4 hours 30 minutes to 5 hours 36 minutes rather than the normal 3 hours 30 or so. If your travel date falls on one of these weekends, check both operators' own timetables before booking and expect a longer, less frequent service. Outside those weekends, no other disruption notices turned up on either operator's live timetable as of 3 September 2026.
