Mälartåg is the regional train service of Stockholm-Mälardalen, with five lines linking Gävle, Uppsala, Stockholm, Örebro and Linköping.
Lines and stations
The network calls at 45 stations, from Gävle in the north to Örebro in the west and Linköping in the south. The five lines are:
- Uppsala, Tierp and Gävle
- Örebro, Eskilstuna, Stockholm and Uppsala
- Linköping, Norrköping, Eskilstuna, Västerås and Sala
- Hallsberg, Katrineholm and Stockholm
- Norrköping, Nyköping and Stockholm
Mälartåg belongs to Mälardalstrafik, a joint venture of six regions that also runs the Movingo period ticket.
Single tickets
You need a valid ticket before you board, because none are sold on the train. Single tickets are sold in the Mälardalstrafik app and on its website, and also by SJ, Snälltåget and Vy; ticket agents add a fee. Prices are fixed, so a ticket bought weeks ahead costs the same as one bought on the day. You can pay by Swish or card, and you do not need an account to book.
Adults pay the full fare from age 20. The discounted fare applies to anyone aged 7 to 19 and to students studying at a pace of 75 percent or more, who must show ID and a valid student card with the SL symbol on board. There is no senior discount. Each paying traveller can take up to two children aged 6 or under for free, extra children pay the youth fare, and children can travel alone from age 7.
Single tickets are refundable only in exceptional cases. If you booked while logged in to your account, you can rebook in the app or on the website up to an hour before departure, for the same route and traveller type. SL single and period tickets are not valid on Mälartåg.
Movingo and other period tickets
Movingo is the period ticket for regular travellers, valid for 30, 90 or 365 days. It covers Mälartåg and local transport along the route you choose, or across the whole region with the Alla sträckor ("all routes") version. The ticket can be lent to someone else. Movingo 5/30 gives five 24-hour tickets to use within 30 days; it cannot be lent and is not valid on SJ departures.
Period tickets from several regional operators also work on Mälartåg: UL, Sörmlandstrafiken, VL and Östgötatrafiken, as do SJ annual cards with the Resplus add-on. X-trafik tickets are valid only between Gävle and Furuvik.
Interrail and Eurail passes
Interrail and Eurail passes are valid on every Mälartåg line at no extra cost. No seat reservation is needed, so you board and take any free seat.
On board
Seating is a single class and cannot be reserved. There is WiFi and there are power sockets at the seats. The double-deck trains have a quiet section, an allergy-friendly section at each end and a section for pets. The flex carriage has two wheelchair spaces, which cannot be booked in advance, and room for prams, large bags and bikes.
Luggage is limited to two bags of up to 80 x 50 x 35 cm and 20 kg, plus a small hand bag. Bikes travel free when there is room: each double-decker set has six bike places and most Regina trains have space for one or two. Tandems, cargo bikes and trailers are not allowed, and the conductor makes the final call on space.
Arlanda Central
Anyone getting on or off at Arlanda Central pays a passage fee of SEK 157, added when you buy a single ticket. Bikes cannot be taken on or off the train there.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to reserve a seat on Mälartåg?
No, and you cannot. Every seat is the same single class and you take any free one. You do need a ticket before you board, because none are sold on the train.
Can I use an Interrail or Eurail pass on Mälartåg?
Yes. Both passes are valid on all five lines at no extra charge, with no seat reservation needed.
Can I take a bike on Mälartåg?
Yes, free of charge when there is space; a double-decker set holds six bikes. The conductor decides on the day, so a place is never guaranteed. Bikes cannot be taken on or off at Arlanda Central, and tandems, cargo bikes and trailers are not allowed.
Are SL tickets valid on Mälartåg?
No. Stockholm's SL single and period tickets are not accepted, so you need a Mälartåg single ticket or a Movingo period ticket.
