Copenhagen to Dortmund by train

There is no direct train from Copenhagen to Dortmund. Every journey requires a change in Hamburg, and the total trip takes somewhere between 8h30m and 9h30m. Plan for the transfer and the route is manageable; miss that detail and you might book a same-day return that simply does not work.

The two key operators are DSB on the Danish side and Deutsche Bahn from Hamburg onward. Book the full journey as one through-ticket on DB’s international website. It costs the same as buying the segments separately, and it means DB owes you a seat on the next available train if you miss your Hamburg connection.

Route and journey

Copenhagen Central (København H) to Hamburg Hbf to Dortmund Hbf. There is no way around the Hamburg change.

The first leg is an EuroCity or EuroCity Express (EC/ECE) service from Copenhagen to Hamburg, roughly 4 hours 40 minutes. From Hamburg you connect to an ICE to Dortmund, which takes about 2 hours 40 to 45 minutes. Allow 30 to 45 minutes for the transfer at Hamburg Hbf; the connection is usually comfortable, but delays on the Copenhagen side do happen.

Around six departures run each day. The fastest connections take about 8h30m to 8h40m; slower options involving a longer transfer or additional stop can stretch to 9h30m or more. Trains leave Copenhagen from early morning through mid-afternoon, with arrivals in Dortmund spread from early evening into the night. Check the live timetable on int.bahn.de for times on your specific date.

At 8 to 9 hours each way, this is not a practical day trip from Copenhagen. You need at least one overnight stay in Dortmund to make the journey worthwhile.

Arriving from Copenhagen Airport: Take the metro or regional train from Copenhagen Airport (Kastrup) to Copenhagen Central, which takes about 14 to 15 minutes. Your international train departs from Copenhagen Central, not the airport.

Train companies

DSB is Denmark's national rail operator. It sells tickets for the Copenhagen to Hamburg leg and operates or co-operates the service through Danish territory. If you are starting your journey at a Danish station before Copenhagen, DSB can book the domestic connection too.

Deutsche Bahn runs the ICE from Hamburg to Dortmund and sells through-tickets for the full Copenhagen to Dortmund route on its international booking site (int.bahn.de). For most travellers, DB is the simplest single booking point.

The EC/ECE trains on the Copenhagen to Hamburg leg are comfortable long-distance trains with air conditioning, power outlets, and free Wi-Fi. The ICE from Hamburg to Dortmund is a high-speed service; the EC to Hamburg is an international express but not a high-speed train.

DB Lounge at Hamburg Hbf: First class travellers may be able to use the lounge during their Hamburg stopover, but this depends on the specific ticket type. Super Saver Europe fares do not include DB Lounge access, even in first class. If lounge access matters to you, check before assuming it is included.

FlixTrain operates domestic routes within Germany and does not serve the Copenhagen to Dortmund international corridor. Worth checking for domestic German travel separately.

Tickets and classes

Second class

Second class on both the EC and ICE offers open-plan seating, power outlets, air conditioning, and free Wi-Fi. It covers everything most travellers need for an 8 to 9-hour day journey.

First class

First class gives you wider seats, more legroom, and a quieter environment. On the DSB portion it is branded DSB1; on DB trains it is standard DB 1st class. At-seat service is available on some ICE departures. First class costs more and may not include lounge access depending on your ticket type.

Fare types

Super Saver Europe (Sparpreis Europa): Available up to six months before travel. Non-refundable and non-exchangeable once you are past the instant-cancellation window. The only exit is a free cancellation within 3 hours of purchase, done through DB's website or the DB Navigator app. Advance fares for the full Copenhagen to Dortmund route start from around EUR 37 in second class, though prices depend on demand and how early you book.

Flexible Fare Europe: Usable on any qualifying train on your travel day. Free cancellation up to 8 days before; a EUR 10 fee applies from 1 to 7 days before; a EUR 30 fee on the day of travel. Flexible fares are considerably more expensive but give you room to change plans.

If your plans are firm, Super Saver is fine. If there is any chance of a change, the EUR 10 to EUR 30 cancellation fee on a Flexible Fare is probably worth the peace of mind.

Prices and how to save

Advance second class fares for the full Copenhagen to Dortmund journey start from around EUR 37, though the exact price depends on the date, the specific trains booked, and how early you book. Six months out generally gives you the widest selection of low fares. Check int.bahn.de directly for the current best price.

First class fares are higher. Compare the Super Saver and Flexible options side by side when you search on DB.

BahnCard discounts: A BahnCard 25, 50, or 100 gives a 25% discount on the German section of the route, which is the Hamburg to Dortmund ICE leg. Enter your card details during booking on DB's website.

Children: Children up to 14 travel free when accompanied by an adult on DB services in many cases. Check the fare conditions when booking, as exceptions apply.

Service frequency

Around six departures per day connect Copenhagen and Dortmund with a single change in Hamburg. A small number of journeys involve a second transfer, which adds time. If speed matters, filter for connections with only one transfer when you search.

Check int.bahn.de or DSB for the exact timetable on your travel date, as departure times shift seasonally and vary by day of the week.

Seat reservations

Seat reservations on the Copenhagen to Hamburg EC/ECE trains are not always compulsory, but they are strongly recommended from June through September. Trains on this corridor fill up in summer, particularly in second class, and you do not want to stand for four hours.

On the Hamburg to Dortmund ICE, reservations are optional but available cheaply through DB when you book.

If you are travelling with an Interrail or Eurail pass, you still need a paid seat reservation for both legs. The pass covers the fare; the reservation is separate and must be booked in advance. Fees vary by train and class. Do not board either train without one.

Baggage

Each passenger may carry up to three pieces of luggage, with each piece no larger than 100 x 60 x 30 cm. No additional charge applies for luggage within these limits. Bicycles and large items require separate arrangements depending on the train.

Interrail and Eurail passes

Both an Interrail Global Pass and a Eurail Global Pass cover DSB services in Denmark and Deutsche Bahn services in Germany. The full Copenhagen to Dortmund route is covered.

Do not board either train with just a pass and no reservation. Seat reservations are required on the ICE and strongly recommended on the EC. Book reservations through the Interrail reservation service, via DB's booking platform, or at station counters. Pass-holder reservation places can be limited in summer, so book well ahead.

An Interrail Denmark Pass covers only domestic Danish services. It does not cover the Hamburg to Dortmund leg. You would need a separate ticket or pass for the German section.

How to book

Book on Deutsche Bahn's international website, int.bahn.de, for the full journey as a single through-ticket. This is the most reliable approach: you get one ticket, one booking reference, and DB's missed-connection obligation if your EC is late and you miss the ICE at Hamburg.

Buying the two legs separately saves nothing on price and puts the connection risk on you.

If you are starting from another Danish city before Copenhagen, DSB can combine the domestic connection with the international booking. The DSB website (dsb.dk) handles the Danish portion.

Tickets open up to six months before departure. Prices are lowest at the opening of the booking window. The DB Navigator app is handy for mobile tickets and live updates on both legs.

Onboard

Both the EC/ECE and the ICE offer free Wi-Fi, power outlets, and air conditioning. Most DB long-distance services have a Bordrestaurant (restaurant car) or Bordbistro (snack bar). You can buy hot meals, snacks, and drinks during the journey; the bistro option typically covers coffee, sandwiches, and basic hot food.

Trains on this route have wheelchair-accessible carriages and boarding ramps. If you need assistance at the station or onto the train, contact DB's mobility service in advance.

Planning tips

Book as one through-ticket on DB. The price is the same as two separate tickets, and you get missed-connection coverage. If your Copenhagen to Hamburg train is late and you miss the ICE, DB rebooks you on the next available service.

Add a seat reservation in summer. From June through September, add a reservation to both legs when you book. Second class on the EC to Hamburg fills up. A reservation costs a few euros and removes any doubt.

Know your cancellation window. Super Saver Europe fares allow free cancellation only within 3 hours of purchase. After that, there is no refund. If your travel dates are uncertain, pay for a Flexible Fare from the start.

Interrail and Eurail: book your reservation before you travel. Your pass covers the fare but not the seat. Reservation places for pass holders are allocated in advance and can run out in summer. Book through the Interrail reservation tool or DB as soon as your dates are fixed.

From Copenhagen Airport: Go to Copenhagen Central first (14 to 15 minutes by metro or regional train), then board the international train. Your Copenhagen to Hamburg train departs from Copenhagen Central, not the airport.

Plan your Hamburg transfer. You have 30 to 45 minutes at Hamburg Hbf. The ICE to Dortmund will be on one of the main long-distance platforms; the departures board in the main hall is clear. With a through-ticket, any delay on the EC that causes you to miss the ICE means DB will put you on the next train to Dortmund without extra cost.
