Train stations in Oslo
Last updated: July 2026
Use Oslo S for most journeys. Switch to Nationaltheatret, Skøyen or Lysaker only when your train calls and the stop suits your address.
Oslo S is the default station
Book Oslo S for most long-distance, international and first-time arrivals. Oslo Sentralstasjon, Oslo Central Station and Oslo S are names for the same station. If a booking result says only Oslo, open the details before paying and confirm the printed stop.
Most long-distance trains terminate here. Direct services run to Bergen, Stavanger, Trondheim, Stockholm and Malmö, with trains also heading towards Gothenburg. Oslo S is the safer choice when separate tickets create a connection. Check the live platform and disruption notice on the day, since engineering work can move a train or replace part of the journey with a bus.
The waiting room is open from 03:45 to 01:30. It is not a 24-hour waiting space. Luggage lockers are available, but make sure you can get back into the station before leaving a bag for a late departure.
Nationaltheatret suits regional and airport journeys
Nationaltheatret works well when your train stops there and your address is near Vika, Aker Brygge, the Royal Palace or the western side of the centre. The station is underground, with metro, tram and bus connections nearby. Flytoget normally calls every 20 minutes.
Do not use Nationaltheatret for Bergen or Stavanger. The F4 and F5 long-distance trains do not call there in the normal pattern. Board at the station printed on the ticket. Direction matters too: westbound trains normally use tracks 1 and 2, while eastbound trains use tracks 3 and 4.
Skøyen and Lysaker can prevent backtracking
Skøyen and Lysaker are useful for accommodation or work west of central Oslo. Both have local, regional and Flytoget services. The F5 towards Kristiansand and Stavanger also calls at Lysaker. Lysaker is in Bærum rather than central Oslo.
Neither station is a universal western substitute. F4 Bergen trains skip both, and the F5 does not call at Skøyen. Search from the exact station for your date, then confirm the stop on the booked train before choosing a hotel or accepting a tight connection.
Oslo Airport trains trade speed against price
Oslo Airport Gardermoen station is below the terminal, reached by lift or escalator. Flytoget is the fastest simple option to Oslo S. The journey takes 19 minutes, trains leave the airport every 10 minutes, and the adult fare is NOK 268. Accompanied children under 16 travel free.
Vy regional trains take about 23 minutes and usually cost around half as much. For one adult, Vy is normally the better-value choice if four minutes makes little difference. It is also the right airport train for an Interrail or Eurail pass holder. Flytoget has its own tickets and sits outside the pass network used by Vy, Go-Ahead Norge and SJ.
Flytoget normally uses the central airport tracks, while Vy and SJ Norge use the outer tracks. Follow the live screen rather than a remembered platform number. When heading for a flight, work backwards from the airline's check-in or bag-drop deadline. Leave more time when missing it would mean buying a new flight.
Bergen, Stavanger and Trondheim trains start at Oslo S
Vy runs direct trains from Oslo to Bergen in roughly 6.5 to 7.5 hours, with six or seven departures a day including overnight options. Book from Oslo S unless the timetable names another boarding station that genuinely suits you. Interrail and Eurail pass holders need a reservation on the Bergen Line.
Go-Ahead Norge runs the Sørlandet route to Kristiansand and Stavanger. SJ Norge reaches Trondheim in about seven hours, with several daytime departures and one night train in each direction. On the Trondheim night train, a standard seat, recliner and sleeper compartment are different products. Compare the accommodation instead of assuming a rail pass provides a bed.
When a journey combines operators, note who runs each leg. Ticket conditions and disruption help follow the relevant company.
Sweden services need an exact destination check
Direct Stockholm and Gothenburg trains leave from Oslo S. SJ runs the principal Stockholm service, and pass holders need a reservation. Vy runs south to Gothenburg and operates direct Malmö trains on weekends, holidays and more frequently in summer.
Only part of a direct Malmö train may continue beyond Gothenburg. Sit in the marked Malmö portion or be ready to move before the train leaves Gothenburg. An optional cross-border Vy seat reservation costs NOK 69 to 139, depending on season.
Oslo has no direct train to Copenhagen. Depending on the departure, change at Gothenburg or take a direct Malmö train and connect towards Copenhagen. If the legs use separate tickets or operators, find out what happens after a missed connection before accepting a short change.
Entur handles most Norwegian rail planning
Start with Entur for journeys within Norway. Its planner covers public transport across the country, and its app sells Norwegian train tickets alongside tickets from many local transport companies. Flytoget sells its own ticket, which is not valid on other train services.
Buy before boarding. Vy normally adds a NOK 40 surcharge when a traveller buys onboard after joining at a station with a ticket machine. Keep a mobile ticket available on a charged phone, and use the operating company's channel when you need changes or disruption support.
Ruter tickets cover Vy trains within the purchased Oslo and Akershus zones, as well as Ruter services. They do not cover Flytoget. Oslo Airport is in zone 4N, so let the planner calculate the zones rather than guessing.
Rail passes still need reservations
Interrail and Eurail cover participating services run by Vy, Go-Ahead Norge and SJ, but the pass does not complete every booking. Reserve the Bergen Line and Oslo to Stockholm, and book a seat or bed before an overnight journey. Reservations on other Norwegian long-distance trains are strongly recommended because popular departures can fill.
Use Entur for Norwegian pass-holder reservations and the relevant operator for Sweden. Check the train category and operator rather than assuming that every service from the same station follows the same rule. Flytoget needs its own ticket even when a pass covers Vy on the airport corridor.
Oslo S connections depend on the right exit
Jernbanetorget metro station and surface tram stops are near Oslo S. These connections work for most central Oslo addresses. Check the Ruter route on the day because maintenance can change entrances, stops or the quickest interchange.
Oslo Bus Terminal is not inside the main rail concourse. It is a signposted walk of about five minutes from Oslo S, so follow the bus-terminal signs instead of leaving towards the Opera House by habit.
For step-free travel, check the lift route at the exact station and book assistance for the train you will use. Oslo S assistance must be booked at least 24 hours before departure. A temporary lift outage can still change the usable route from street to platform.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use a contactless bank card as a Flytoget ticket?
Yes. Tap the card at the station before boarding. On arrival at Oslo Airport, tap the same card at the barrier. When leaving the airport, tap at the barrier and choose your destination. Register a Flytoget profile first if you need a student or senior discount.
Does Nationaltheatret station have luggage lockers?
No. Nationaltheatret has no storage lockers; the nearest station lockers are at Oslo S. Use Oslo S if you need to leave a bag, and check its access hours before relying on a late collection.
Is Nationaltheatret station accessible without stairs?
Yes. Lifts serve the platforms, the waiting hall has step-free access, and the conductor can deploy a mobile ramp for wheelchair users. Check the live lift status and confirm assistance for the specific train before travelling.
Is Oslo Airport station open overnight?
The station waiting room stays open around the clock, and storage boxes are available in the airport. This does not guarantee an overnight train. Check the first or last departure and the terminal's own access rules before planning a long wait.
Can I buy an Oslo to Stockholm ticket at Oslo S?
No. Buy it in advance from the train company rather than relying on the Oslo S ticket office. Keep the ticket available for inspection, and use the issuing operator for changes or disruption help.
