Oslo to Copenhagen by train

There is no direct train from Oslo to Copenhagen. One change, at Göteborg Centralstation, gets you there in a little over 8 hours.

Choosing your connection at Göteborg

Vy runs trains from Oslo S to Göteborg roughly every two hours through the day, seven days a week, and each one meets an onward Öresundståg service to Copenhagen. How much buffer you get at Göteborg Centralstation depends on which pair of trains you pick.

The tightest connection on this corridor is the 15:45 departure from Oslo S. It reaches Göteborg at 19:15 and meets an Öresundståg departure at 19:55, a 40 minute change, landing in Copenhagen at 23:25: about 7 hours 40 minutes door to door, and the fastest option on this route. Both trains use the same station building, so it is a walk across the platform rather than a transfer across town. Take it if your onward plans in Copenhagen can absorb a fairly late arrival and you are travelling light.

Vy and Öresundståg are separate companies. Vy is Norwegian state owned; Öresundståg is contracted to VR Sverige AB on behalf of six Swedish and Danish regional transport authorities. Neither has committed to rebooking you free of charge if a late Vy train costs you that connection. An earlier Vy departure buys a longer, more comfortable change, commonly 60 to 90 minutes rather than 40, which is worth choosing if you are travelling with a group, with a lot of luggage, or simply do not want to rely on a tight margin at an unfamiliar station.

Weekday service starts earlier than weekend service: the first Vy departure from Oslo S is 06:11 on weekdays against 08:14 on Saturdays and Sundays. Both weekday and weekend timetables run trains into the early evening, so a same-day arrival in Copenhagen is realistic whichever day you travel. Exact departures differ by day, so look up your specific date on vy.no or oresundstag.se; the weekday pattern does not carry over to weekends.

Malmö is a calling point, not a change

The Öresundståg leg runs as one continuous service from Göteborg through Malmö C to København H, so you do not get off at Malmö unless you choose to. Know the name anyway: if your ticket search shows a separate Göteborg to Malmö leg and Malmö to Copenhagen leg, that is a different, more broken-up itinerary than the direct through train, not this one.

Tickets: three currencies, and none of them convert into another

This corridor genuinely runs on three separate currencies, and which one you pay depends on which website sells you the ticket, not on a fixed exchange rate.

Book the two legs separately for the clearest pricing. Öresundståg's own site prices a direct, no change Copenhagen to Göteborg ticket at roughly SEK 550 to 650 in second class on most departures, with no seat reservation required. Vy prices the Göteborg to Oslo leg in Norwegian krone: advance fares can fall to around NOK 300 to 500 if you book several weeks ahead, rising toward NOK 700 to 1,000 close to departure. Treat these as two separate prices on two separate sites in two separate currencies. Do not add them together to estimate a single through cost.

Öresundståg's own booking engine can also sell a single ticket covering the whole Copenhagen to Oslo journey. Treat that option with some caution: the price and the routing it offers are dynamic, sometimes include a change of bus rather than train, and do not always match the simple one-change journey described above. Weigh it against the two-leg price. It is not automatically the cheaper choice.

If you are buying from Denmark, DSB also sells tickets that cover this whole route into Norway, priced in Danish kroner. DSB does not publish a fixed DKK figure for this journey the way it does for some German destinations. Look up the current price on DSB's own search rather than expecting one here.

If you are travelling on an Interrail or Eurail pass, this is a straightforward corridor: no reservation is needed on either the Vy leg or the Öresundståg leg, so you simply board and sit anywhere in the class your pass covers.

No sleeper train, but there is an overnight ferry

No sleeper train currently runs between Oslo and Copenhagen. If you want to travel overnight anyway, a separate overnight ferry covers the same corridor, run by Go Nordic Cruiseline. It sails daily in both directions, departing at 16:30 and arriving at 10:00 the next morning, with private cabins and a scenic entry into Oslo Fjord. It is a different trip rather than a rail substitute: the ferry terminals sit apart from the train stations at both ends, a walk of roughly 15 to 20 minutes from Oslo S on the Oslo side, so budget extra time to get there if you are combining it with a train journey. A one-way crossing is priced from around DKK 293 per person, a firm Danish krone figure separate from the train fares above.

Engineering work through autumn 2026

Trafikverket, the Swedish infrastructure manager, is running recurring single-track maintenance on the Göteborg to Halmstad to Malmö stretch used by the Öresundståg leg, in three windows across autumn 2026: 1 to 30 September, 1 to 27 October, and 2 to 30 November. Öresundståg's own published effect is altered timings on some departures rather than cancellations or bus replacement on this stretch. If your travel date falls in one of these windows, check your specific train close to departure.

Train versus flying Oslo to Copenhagen

Flying covers the distance in about an hour and a quarter in the air, but that excludes getting to the airport, security, and boarding at both ends. The train takes longer overall, but it drops you at Oslo S and picks you up at København H, both in the middle of their cities, with one change to stretch your legs and several hours of Swedish west coast scenery through Halland in between. For a single overnight-free day trip, the train's one change at Göteborg is a reasonable trade against a shorter flight with a longer airport routine either side.
