Go-Ahead

Go-Ahead is the train operator on Sørlandsbanen, Arendalsbanen and Jærbanen in southern Norway, running trains between Oslo in the east and Stavanger in the west, via Kristiansand. Its first service ran on 15 December 2019.

Where Go-Ahead runs

The main route, marketed as Sørtoget, follows the Oslo to Stavanger corridor through Kristiansand, calling at stations including Drammen, Kongsberg, Bø, Arendal and Egersund. Go-Ahead also runs the short Arendalsbanen branch and Jærbanen, the commuter line around Stavanger and Sandnes. It sits within Go-Ahead Nordic, the umbrella for the UK-based Go-Ahead group's operations in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland.

Tickets and fares

Buy tickets on the Go-Ahead website and app, at Entur ticket machines found at most Sørtoget stations, at staffed stations, on the train, or by contacting customer service. Digital tickets go on sale 90 days before departure; station machines only sell them from 30 days out. Jærbanen runs on Kolumbus tickets and fare rules instead. Cash works there and at station machines, but not on board Sørtoget.

Sørtoget fares split into two categories. Lavpris is the cheapest, but it cannot be changed or refunded beyond a four-hour window after purchase, and cannot be upgraded before boarding. Fleks costs more and can be changed or cancelled free up to 24 hours before departure, with a 100 NOK fee after that. Children, students and people aged 67 or older get discounted fares with valid ID. Conscripts travelling on military service get a separate 90 percent discount on Fleks Standard tickets, with a minimum price on short trips and documentation required.

Board without a ticket on Sørtoget and the conductor will sell you a Fleks ticket, with a 40 NOK surcharge added. A sold-out train can still mean you are turned away. On Jærbanen, look for the staffed carriage to buy on board, since unstaffed carriages require a valid ticket at all times.

Passes and other operators

Period tickets bought from Vy stay valid on Go-Ahead's trains wherever the route overlaps, useful if a commute crosses operator boundaries. A single ticket can also top up a period ticket for an occasional longer trip, though two period tickets cannot be combined, and Kolumbus period tickets do not cover Go-Ahead's Sørtoget services.
