Day trains from Bergen

Until 12 December 2026, four day trains leave Bergen for Oslo on weekdays and Sundays, and three on Saturdays. The first goes just after 08:00. Until 12 December 2026, the early departure just after 06:00 runs as a replacement bus, not a train. From 13 December 2026 it is a train again from Monday to Saturday. That gives five day trains on weekdays and four at weekends.

On weekdays and Sundays the last day train leaves in the late afternoon and reaches Oslo just after midnight. Saturday ends earlier, with the last one in mid-afternoon. Over Christmas only two or three trains run on 24, 25 and 31 December.

Day trains take from about 6 hours 45 minutes to 7 hours 20 minutes. Each one calls at Voss, Myrdal, Finse, Geilo, Gol, Hønefoss and Drammen.

Where to sit and when to go

Sit on the right for Hardangervidda. The left side gets the fjord and valley views.

In winter the plateau is light only from roughly 09:00 to 15:00, so leave Bergen in the morning if the scenery matters to you. Heavy snow can force Vy to cancel some departures, so check your train on the day you travel.

Starting from Flåm? The Flåm Railway climbs to Myrdal, where you join the Bergen Line. Interrail doesn't cover the Flåm Railway, but pass holders get 30% off.

Overnight to Oslo

The night train leaves Bergen just after 23:00 on every night except Saturday and reaches Oslo S at about 06:30. It does not run on 24, 25 or 31 December 2026. Sleeper check-in is on the platform in Bergen. You have four ways to spend the night:

  • an ordinary reclining seat
  • PlusNight, a lie-flat seat in a private pod
  • Sleeper, a private two-bed compartment with a washbasin
  • Rest, a private compartment with six berths

For a real night's sleep, book the Sleeper. You can stay on board until 06:45 at Oslo S, which helps if you have an early flight: Oslo Airport is about 20 minutes away by train. There's no breakfast on board, but the café is open through the night.

Buying tickets

Vy sells every ticket on this route, on its website and in the Vy app. Each Bergen Line train needs a seat reservation, and an ordinary Vy ticket already includes it.

Fares vary by departure and rise as seats sell. The cheapest is Lowfare. Numbers are limited, and a Lowfare ticket can't be changed or refunded. Plus gets you a roomier seat with free coffee and tea.

Light rail and buses link Bergen stasjon with Bergen Airport. If you're bringing a bike, reserve one of the 15 bike spaces before you travel.

Interrail pass holders

The pass covers the journey, but every train still needs a paid reservation. Expect about €6 for a standard second-class seat; first-class holders reserve a Premium seat free, booked locally in Norway. Overnight, an ordinary seat costs €4 to €6 (free in first class), a sleeper compartment €86 to €107 for one or two people, and the six-berth compartment €430 for up to six. Reserve through the Interrail reservation service, by phone with Entur, or at a staffed station ticket desk in Norway.
