The journey from Flåm to Oslo takes about 5 hours 40 minutes to 7 hours 20 minutes, depending on the connection. It is not direct: take the Flåm Railway to Myrdal, then Vy's Bergen Line to Oslo S.
The first leg is the Flåm Railway from Flåm station to Myrdal. From there, change to a Vy train on the Bergen Line for Oslo S. Search the complete itinerary when you book, because the Flåm Railway timetable determines which Bergen Line departures you can use.
Leaving Flåm
Flåm station is in the centre of the village, a short walk from the cruise port, bus stops, hotels and restaurants. The Flåm Railway Museum is in the original station building. It is easy to reach on foot if you are staying in the village. The Flåm Railway takes about an hour to reach Myrdal, and its departures change with the season.
The Flåm Railway ticket is valid only for the departure printed on it, so buy it for the train you plan to take. Myrdal has no ticket office or ticket machine, so buy your Bergen Line ticket before you leave Flåm.
The change at Myrdal
Myrdal station is on the Bergen Line at around 867 metres above sea level and has no road connection. It has a 24-hour waiting room, toilets and wheelchair access to the platforms, but no luggage storage or ticket sales. The station connects the Flåm Railway with the Bergen Line, so keep your ticket and luggage with you during the change.
Follow the signs for the Bergen Line and board the Vy train towards Oslo. Connections can be tight, especially with children or large bags, so leave some buffer when your arrival time in Oslo matters. If a delayed Flåm Railway train makes you miss the Bergen Line, ask the conductor or contact Vy before buying another ticket. Vy's connection guarantee covers changes between Vy, SJ Nord and Go-Ahead trains, so do not assume it applies to the Flåm Railway.
Myrdal to Oslo S
Vy operates the Bergen Line. From Myrdal, the trains to Oslo S take about 5 hours. Three connections a day work from Flåm in the autumn and winter timetable, with Bergen Line departures from Myrdal at about 10:00, 13:50 and 17:40. The Flåm Railway runs all year with more trains in summer. The wait at Myrdal ranges from about 10 minutes to about 1 hour 25 minutes, depending on the season and the train.
The Bergen Line arrives at Oslo S, also called Oslo Central Station. It is in central Oslo, beside the city's bus, tram and metro connections. Follow the signs from the concourse if you are continuing by public transport.
Tickets, reservations and rail passes
For an ordinary journey, book a Vy single ticket for the available Flåm to Oslo itinerary. A standard ticket includes a free seat reservation on the Bergen Line. The Flåm Railway leg is tied to the specified departure on your ticket, so do not assume the same ticket lets you board an earlier or later train.
An Interrail or Eurail Pass covers the Vy Bergen Line, but pass holders must reserve a seat before boarding that route. The Flåm Railway is not covered by the pass. An active Interrail or Eurail travel day gives 30% off an ordinary single Flåm Railway ticket, which you buy separately. This is a discount, not full pass coverage. Buy the Flåm Railway ticket through Entur, Vy or a ticket office at a Norwegian station. Myrdal has no ticket office or machine, so buy your Bergen Line ticket and seat reservation before you leave Flåm.
How often do trains run?
In the autumn and winter timetable there are three Flåm to Oslo connections a day: one in the morning, one around midday and one in the late afternoon. They reach Oslo S at about 15:05, 19:05 and 22:30. Summer has more Flåm Railway departures, but the Bergen Line trains from Myrdal still decide which ones link up. Search the whole journey for your date.
