Every Vy train from Oslo S runs direct to Bergen stasjon over the mountains. By day or overnight, the journey takes about 7 hours.

How many trains run

Until 12 December 2026, four day trains leave Oslo S for Bergen on weekdays and Saturdays, and three on Sundays, because the mid-afternoon departure runs as a replacement bus, not a train. From 13 December 2026 it is a train again on weekdays and Sundays. That makes five day trains on weekdays and four at weekends.

The first weekday train leaves at about half past six in the morning. The last day train goes in the late afternoon and reaches Bergen before midnight. Christmas is thin: only two or three trains run on 24, 25 and 31 December.

Journey time and the view

Day trains take from about 6 hours 35 minutes to just over 7 hours. The departure at around half past eight is usually quickest, because it skips a few small stations. Every train calls at Drammen, Hønefoss, Gol, Geilo, Finse, Myrdal and Voss.

Book a morning train in winter. Daylight on the Hardangervidda plateau lasts only from roughly 09:00 to 15:00, and an afternoon start crosses the high ground in the dark. Take a seat on the left for the plateau, or on the right for the fjord and valley views.

Heavy snow can lead Vy to cancel some departures in winter, so check your train on the day you travel.

Going to Flåm instead? Change at Myrdal for the Flåm Railway, about an hour down to the fjord. Interrail doesn't cover it, though pass holders get 30% off.

The night train

The night train leaves Oslo S just after 23:00 every night except Saturday and pulls into Bergen at about 06:20. It does not run on 24, 25 or 31 December 2026. You choose how you sleep:

  • an ordinary reclining seat
  • PlusNight, a lie-flat seat in a private pod
  • Sleeper, a private two-bed compartment with a washbasin
  • Rest, a private compartment with six berths

Take a Sleeper if you want a proper night. Check-in is on board in carriage 5 at Oslo S, and you can stay in your bed or seat until 06:45 in Bergen, so there is no need to hurry off. Breakfast isn't served on the train, but the café stays open overnight.

Tickets and seat reservations

Vy sells every ticket on this route, on its website and in the Vy app. A seat reservation is compulsory on all Bergen Line trains, and an ordinary Vy ticket includes one at no extra cost.

Fares change by departure and climb as seats sell. Lowfare is the cheapest ticket, but only a limited number go on sale and they can't be changed or refunded. Plus buys you a roomier seat and free coffee and tea.

Travelling with a bike? There are 15 bike spaces, and you must reserve one in advance.

On the night train, an ordinary seat costs €4 to €6 (free in first class), a sleeper compartment €86 to €107 for one or two people, and the six-berth compartment €430 for up to six.
