Frequently asked questions

Is there a direct train from Stockholm to Hamburg?

Yes. Snälltåget runs a direct daytime train from Stockholm C to Hamburg Hbf daily from 4 May to 1 November 2026. The published timetable shows a 10:43 departure from Stockholm C and a 21:57 arrival at Hamburg Hbf, a journey of around 11 hours and 14 minutes. No change of train is required. Outside this season, you need to connect via Malmö and Copenhagen.

What is the best way to travel from Stockholm to Hamburg by train?

For most travellers, the Snälltåget direct day train is the clearest option between 4 May and 1 November 2026. One train, no changes, a dining car on board, and an arrival in central Hamburg the same evening. If those dates do not suit, the connecting route via Malmö and Copenhagen takes a similar 10 to 12 hours but involves two or three trains. For overnight travel, Snälltåget's night train runs on selected dates, and RDC Nachtexpress takes over the Berlin and Hamburg night connection from 1 September 2026, three times a week.

Does Snälltåget run a day train and a night train on this route?

Yes, Snälltåget runs both. The day train operates daily from 4 May to 1 November 2026, departing Stockholm C at 10:43 and arriving at Hamburg Hbf at 21:57. The night train departs Stockholm C at around 16:25, arrives at Hamburg Hbf at around 05:06 the following morning, and continues to Berlin. Night train accommodation includes seats, couchettes in shared compartments, and private sleeping compartments. The two services have separate booking pages on the Snälltåget website.

When does RDC Nachtexpress replace SJ EuroNight on the Stockholm to Hamburg route?

SJ EuroNight runs until 31 August 2026, then stops. RDC Deutschland launches its Nachtexpress service on 1 September 2026, taking over the overnight connection between Stockholm, Hamburg, and Berlin. RDC runs three times a week: Mon/Fri from Berlin to Stockholm, Thu/Sat from Stockholm to Berlin, with a Tuesday Stockholm to Hamburg run and a Wednesday Hamburg to Stockholm run. Tickets start from EUR 40 and are sold at nachtexpress.de. The two operators use separate booking systems, so do not assume any SJ reservation carries over to RDC.

Do I need a reservation with an Interrail or Eurail pass on this route?

Yes. A valid Interrail or Eurail pass covers the route but does not reserve your seat. Reservations are compulsory on all services between Stockholm and Hamburg. For the Snälltåget day train, pass-holder seat reservations typically cost between EUR 4.50 and EUR 14 depending on the leg and booking channel. For night trains, a seat reservation is the cheapest option; couchettes and private sleepers cost more and tend to sell out well before departure, so book your accommodation type as soon as your dates are fixed.

Can I take a bicycle on the Stockholm to Hamburg train?

Not on a standard bicycle. Snälltåget's rules for the direct day train do not allow regular bikes. Folding bikes are the exception: if the folded bike fits within the hand-luggage size limit of 55 x 45 x 25 cm when packed in a bag, it may be permitted. Confirm directly with Snälltåget before you travel, as the rules can vary by service and season.
