Paris to Lyon by train

Paris to Lyon is one of the easiest high-speed journeys in France. Direct TGV trains link the two cities in about two hours, with the fastest scheduled trains around 1 hour 50 minutes. There are roughly 25 to 30 high-speed departures a day, so you rarely wait long for the next one.

Most trains run between Paris Gare de Lyon and Lyon Part-Dieu, both central and well connected to local transport. The main decision is which service to book: SNCF’s full-service TGV INOUI, the low-cost OUIGO, or a slower regional routing. Book early and you can travel cheaply. Leave it late and the fare climbs.

Tickets and travel classes

Both TGV INOUI and OUIGO are high-speed trains, but they are not the same product, and choosing the wrong one is the most common mistake on this route.

TGV INOUI is SNCF’s full-service train. You get a reserved seat, power sockets, free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and a café-bar. It sells in two classes. Second class is comfortable and the sensible default for most travellers. First class adds wider seats, more space, and quieter carriages, with a more flexible fare structure on the higher tiers. Choose first class when you want the extra room or a genuinely flexible ticket, not for the on-board catering alone.

OUIGO is SNCF’s no-frills high-speed brand. The seats and speed are similar, but the fare only includes one cabin bag and one small personal item, and you pay extra for things like a second bag, a power socket, or the quiet “Espace tranquillité” zone. OUIGO is booked online only, and changes are limited. It is the cheapest way to travel when you book early and pack light. It is the wrong choice if you want flexibility or a central station every time.

For the lowest price, book OUIGO or an advance TGV INOUI fare. Switch to a flexible TGV INOUI fare when your plans might change, because the cheap fares are the least forgiving.

Train companies on the route

Three high-speed operators serve the corridor, plus slower regional trains.

SNCF TGV INOUI runs the bulk of the fast direct services and is the train most travellers will take. OUIGO, also operated by SNCF, is the low-cost option on the same line. Trenitalia also runs some high-speed Frecciarossa trains on the corridor, continuing on towards Turin and Milan. It has fewer daily departures than SNCF, so check times before assuming it fits your day.

Regional TER and Intercités trains also link points along the route, but there is no fast direct regional alternative to the TGV. A regional routing usually means a change and several extra hours. It only makes sense if you are stopping somewhere in between, or you specifically want to avoid a TGV reservation.

Stations: which one to book

This is where it pays to slow down before you pay.

In Paris, the standard departure is Paris Gare de Lyon, in the 12th arrondissement, with direct metro, RER and tram links across the city. Most TGV INOUI services leave from here. Some OUIGO trains, though, depart from suburban stations such as Marne-la-Vallée-Chessy, out by Disneyland, or Massy TGV, both well outside central Paris. If your OUIGO fare looks unusually cheap, check the departure station before booking, or you may face a long trip out to the suburbs just to start your journey.

In Lyon, book Lyon Part-Dieu for most trips. It sits in the business district, with trams and the metro running into the centre and across to Vieux Lyon. Lyon Perrache, on the southern tip of the Presqu’île, is a good choice if you are staying in that part of the centre. Watch out for Lyon Saint-Exupéry TGV, which is at the airport about 30 minutes from the city by tram-train. Only a few services call there, and you do not want to arrive at the airport by mistake. If a booking page shows only “Lyon”, open the train details and confirm the exact station before you pay.

Paris Gare de Lyon is worth a few minutes on the way through. Hall 1 houses Le Train Bleu, the grand belle-époque restaurant above the platforms, and both halls have ticket machines, staffed counters, left-luggage and the usual cafés and shops.

How to buy tickets

The official seller is SNCF Connect, the SNCF website and app, which handles TGV INOUI, OUIGO and regional tickets, e-tickets, and live train status. OUIGO can also be booked on its own site, but only online.

Third-party platforms such as Trainline, Rail Europe and Omio sell the same trains and can be useful for booking in your own language or comparing operators in one place. They sometimes add a small booking fee, so compare the final price. No single channel is always cheapest. For the lowest fare, how early you book matters far more than where you book.

If you prefer to buy in person, Paris Gare de Lyon has self-service machines that take cards and contactless, and a staffed ticket office, the Boutique Grandes Lignes SNCF in the Galerie des Fresques. Arrive with time to spare at busy periods, and note that not all counter staff speak English.

Fares and what changes the price

TGV INOUI and OUIGO both use dynamic pricing: the earliest fares are the cheapest, and prices rise as seats sell and departure approaches. Advance fares can start low, often in the €20s to €40s for second class booked well ahead, while a fully flexible or walk-up TGV INOUI fare can run to €85 to €110 or more. Treat these as orientation, not a quote for your train. The only accurate price is the one shown for your exact date and departure.

The practical rule is simple. Book as early as you reasonably can for the cheapest fares, especially around weekends, holidays and the summer peak, when cheap places sell out first. If your plans are uncertain, pay for a flexible TGV INOUI fare rather than gambling on a cheap non-flexible one you may not be able to change.

Regional TER tickets are usually fixed-price and do not need a reservation, but the slower journey rarely makes them worthwhile here unless you are travelling to an intermediate town.

Train times and frequency

High-speed trains run roughly every half-hour to hour through the day, from early morning until late evening. There are around 25 to 30 high-speed departures from Paris to Lyon each day, and a similar number coming back. The fastest scheduled services cover the journey in about 1 hour 50 minutes; most take a little over two hours depending on stops. Weekend timetables are broadly similar to weekdays.

Times vary by service and by which stations a train calls at, so check the journey time for your exact departure when you book rather than assuming every train is the fastest.

Seat reservations, changes and baggage

All TGV services, including TGV INOUI and OUIGO, require a seat reservation, which is built into the ticket when you buy a normal fare.

Change and refund rules depend on the service and fare. TGV INOUI tickets are generally exchangeable, with cheaper fares becoming less flexible and an exchange fee applying close to departure; the most flexible first-class fares allow free changes. OUIGO is non-refundable, though you can usually change a booking for a small per-passenger fee up to shortly before departure. If there is any chance your plans will shift, the cheapest OUIGO fare is a false economy.

Baggage is generous on TGV INOUI, which allows two larger bags plus a piece of hand luggage per passenger, carried and stored by you. OUIGO includes only one cabin bag and one small item in the base fare, with extras paid for in advance or, more expensively, at the station. Regional TER trains have no strict size limits, but you are responsible for storing your luggage safely.

Using an Interrail or Eurail pass

An Interrail or Eurail pass covers the Paris to Lyon route on SNCF trains, but a pass alone is not enough to board a TGV.

TGV INOUI requires a compulsory pass-holder seat reservation. As of June 2026, that reservation costs €10 per person while the limited pass-holder quota lasts, rising to €20 once the €10 places sell out. The cheap quota is capped, and France is a popular pass-travel country, so these places can disappear on busy departures. Reserve as early as you can, especially from June to September. You can book pass-holder reservations through Interrail’s own service or at SNCF station counters.

OUIGO is not covered by rail passes at all. If you are travelling on a pass and see a cheap OUIGO fare, remember you would be paying for it in full, separately from your pass.

If TGV reservations are sold out for pass holders, your fallback is a regional TER service, which needs no reservation but takes considerably longer and usually involves a change. It is slower, but it keeps you moving on your pass without an extra fare.
