TGV INOUI runs most of the day's direct departures, and is the standard full-service option: two free pieces of luggage, a buffet car, and tickets that can usually be exchanged or refunded up to three days before departure. OUIGO is the low-cost alternative, running one direct evening departure alongside its connecting services, with fares that can undercut TGV INOUI by half or more on the same day, but a stricter luggage allowance and extra charges for anything beyond a single carry-on and a small bag.

OUIGO runs one direct departure a day without a change, in the evening, so TGV INOUI is not your only non-stop option. If your plans are fixed and you are comfortable travelling light, OUIGO is usually the cheaper way to make the same journey; if you want a wider choice of direct departure times or the extra comfort of a buffet car, TGV INOUI is worth the higher fare.

Trains leave from La Rochelle station and arrive into Paris Montparnasse, specifically Hall 1 and 2 of that station, not Gare du Nord, Gare de Lyon or any other Paris terminus. That holds for both operators: OUIGO's direct La Rochelle departure arrives at Montparnasse too, not an out-of-town alternative, so there is no risk of ending up at the wrong station depending on which brand you book. Montparnasse is the departure and arrival point for all of France's western and southwestern TGV services, so if you are connecting onward to Brittany or continuing further south, you generally will not need to cross Paris.

A seat reservation is compulsory on this route on both TGV INOUI and OUIGO, and it is bundled automatically into a standard ticket bought directly from either brand. Interrail and Eurail passes are valid on both brands on this corridor, including OUIGO, since a July 2026 change brought OUIGO into the pass network; the compulsory reservation is not included with the pass itself, so pass holders book it separately, and pay a supplement, through the official Interrail or Eurail reservation service rather than the standard ticket process.

On TGV INOUI, your ticket includes up to two pieces of luggage measuring no more than 70 x 90 x 50cm, plus one piece of hand baggage. OUIGO tickets include a single carry-on bag up to 55 x 35 x 25cm and one piece of hand luggage; anything larger needs the extra or XL luggage option for EUR 5 per bag.

A folded or dismantled bike travels on OUIGO for EUR 5 in a bag no larger than 130 x 90cm and no heavier than 30kg. Small pets travel with you for EUR 7 to EUR 10 depending on the brand, in a carrier no larger than a piece of cabin baggage; larger pets can travel muzzled and on a lead for a similar fixed fee, and guide dogs travel free on both brands. OUIGO also offers a fixed EUR 8 fare for children under 12, with under-4s free on an adult's lap.
