Marseille to Paris by train

Marseille to Paris is one of France's busiest rail corridors, with direct trains running all day and the fastest covering the distance in just over three hours.

Every train on this corridor is direct, so there is no need to plan a connection or a platform change partway through. Most of the run is on France's high-speed LGV network, which is why the fastest OUIGO and TGV INOUI departures land at just over three hours despite the 671 kilometre distance. It is not a scenic route in the way an Alpine or coastal line is; roughly 95 percent of it runs at high speed through cuttings and open countryside, so treat it as a fast, practical link rather than a sightseeing trip.

OUIGO or TGV INOUI: which to book

Both brands belong to SNCF Voyageurs and share the same Marseille Saint-Charles to Paris Gare de Lyon corridor, but they are priced and equipped differently. OUIGO is the low-cost option, with fares starting from EUR 16 and a no-frills setup: seats are fixed, and extras like additional luggage, a chosen seat, or travelling with a pet cost more on top of the base fare. Children under 12 travel on a fixed EUR 8 fare, and a pushchair rides free.

TGV INOUI costs more but includes two pieces of luggage and a hand bag in the ticket price, a bar car partway down the train, and a choice of Standard or the flexible OPTIMUM class, which allows free changes and refunds even on a full train. If your plans could shift, that flexibility is worth pricing against OUIGO's cheaper but stricter fare before you book.

A handful of Intercites services also run this corridor. They are the slower, classic option, taking around 7 hours 53 minutes into Paris Austerlitz rather than Gare de Lyon, and worth knowing about only if the high-speed fares spike on your travel date and the extra time is an acceptable trade for a lower fare.

Stations at each end

Marseille Saint-Charles is the departure point for both OUIGO and TGV INOUI services, and it sits close to the city centre with metro and tram connections. Most trains arrive at Paris Gare de Lyon, also a central terminus with direct Metro and RER links. A few OUIGO departures instead serve Marne-la-Vallee Chessy, next to Disneyland Paris, or Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, so check your specific arrival station when you book rather than assuming every train ends at Gare de Lyon.

Fares, reservations and rail passes

A seat reservation is compulsory on every train on this route, and it is bundled into your ticket price automatically when you book a standard fare. Interrail and Eurail pass holders can now use their pass on both TGV INOUI and OUIGO, since a July 2026 change brought OUIGO into the pass network; before that date OUIGO was excluded. The reservation stays compulsory for pass holders too, is paid separately on top of the pass, and can currently only be booked through the Eurail or Interrail reservation service rather than through OUIGO or SNCF Connect.

OUIGO's EUR 16 fare is its own advertised floor for advance Standard tickets, not a fixed price for every departure; the cheapest seats sell out first, and prices on the calendar climb well above that on busier dates. TGV INOUI does not publish a comparable flat starting fare on this corridor, so budget it as the pricier of the two brands and compare both before booking if your dates are flexible.

Onboard: luggage and pets

TGV INOUI includes up to two pieces of luggage, each no larger than 70 by 90 by 50 centimetres, plus one hand bag up to 40 by 30 by 15 centimetres, in the ticket price. OUIGO caps you to one suitcase stored under the seat plus hand luggage as standard, and charges extra for anything more, which matters if you are travelling with sports gear or a second case.

Both brands allow pets. On TGV INOUI, a small pet in a closed carrier up to 45 by 30 by 25 centimetres costs EUR 7, a larger muzzled and leashed pet also costs a flat EUR 7, and a guide dog travels free. OUIGO charges a flat EUR 10 per pet regardless of size, booked as an a la carte option when you buy your ticket.

Marseille to Paris is one of France's busiest domestic lines, run entirely by SNCF Voyageurs' own brands, which makes it less exposed to the kind of cross-border disruption that can affect an international service.
