Paris to Stuttgart by train

One direct train covers Paris to Stuttgart each day, taking 3 hours 36 minutes. A further four or five departures run the same route with a single change at Mannheim, typically taking just over four hours.

Paris to Stuttgart train at a glance

This is a genuine joint France-Germany service, not a French train that happens to cross the border. SNCF and Deutsche Bahn run the direct departure together under one shared brand, DB SNCF Voyageurs in cooperation, with a Franco-German crew and TGV Duplex or ICE3 stock. The other daily departures split the same corridor between the two railways: an SNCF-branded train to Mannheim Hbf, then a separate Deutsche Bahn train onward to Stuttgart, with a scheduled connection of around 17 minutes.

Only one of the day's departures runs without changing trains, leaving Paris Est in the early afternoon and reaching Stuttgart Hbf in 3 hours 36 minutes. If that slot does not suit you, four or five more options run earlier and later in the day, each adding roughly 25 to 30 minutes for the change at Mannheim. Both are sold and booked the same way, through SNCF Connect or Deutsche Bahn's own site, so treat the change as a planning detail rather than a different or cheaper train.

Route and stations

The direct service runs from Paris Gare de l'Est, not Gare du Nord or Gare de Lyon. If you are connecting from Eurostar, the RER, or a hotel near a different station, factor in the cross-Paris transfer before you book a tight connection. Gare de l'Est is a terminus with step-free access from concourse to platform.

The corridor runs via Strasbourg and Karlsruhe before reaching Stuttgart, the same routing used for the first leg of the Mannheim-change options. Trains arrive into Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof, the city's central station and also a terminus, within easy reach of the city centre.

Tickets, fares and booking

Advance Standard fares start from EUR 49 on SNCF Connect, though the cheapest seats are limited and sell out first, so booking a specific date and time early tends to protect the lower prices rather than guarantee them. Tickets go on sale up to six months ahead of travel.

A seat reservation is compulsory for any journey to, from, or within France, and it comes bundled with your ticket automatically. A reservation is optional for journeys wholly within Germany. If you are travelling on an Interrail or Eurail pass, check its current reservation requirement for this specific service before you rely on it.

Onboard: luggage, bikes, pets and classes

There is no stated weight or piece limit for luggage you can carry and store yourself; label your bags and use the racks at the car ends or between seats. A folded or dismantled bike travels free in a case up to 1.30 by 0.90 metres.

A small pet in a closed container up to 45 by 30 by 25 centimetres costs a flat EUR 7, and a dog on a lead and muzzled costs a flat EUR 20; guide and assistance dogs travel free, without a container or muzzle. Onboard, the TGV INOUI sections have a bar car, while the ICE sections carry a restaurant or bistro car, so where you sit on a mixed-formation train can change what catering you have easy access to. Both Standard and First class are available; First buys more space and legroom rather than any food or drink, so weigh that against the 3 to 4-hour journey time before paying the difference.

Deutsche Bahn's own December 2025 timetable update flags recurring, temporary building-related restrictions around Stuttgart's rail hub through 2026, without naming this Paris to Stuttgart service among the affected routes. Confirm your exact departure close to your travel date on SNCF Connect or bahn.de, and keep some slack around any onward connection in Stuttgart or Paris in case work on either network causes a delay.
