Calais has two separate stations, and knowing which one your train uses matters more here than in most French towns.

Calais-Ville is the town centre station

Calais-Ville sits close to the harbour and old town, served by TER regional trains from Lille, Boulogne and other towns along the Cote d'Opale. If your accommodation is walkable from the centre, an itinerary that ends at Calais-Ville is usually the more convenient arrival.

Calais-Frethun is the TGV station, but not for Eurostar

Calais-Frethun sits a few kilometres outside town and handles TGV long distance services and TER connections toward Lille-Europe, with around a dozen direct TER departures a day. Eurostar trains physically pass through Calais-Frethun on the high speed line but do not currently stop there for passengers: cross Channel Eurostar service to and from Calais was suspended after Brexit border checks made a standalone Calais stop impractical, and it has not resumed. If your plan depends on catching Eurostar at Calais, book instead through Lille or Paris, where full passport control operates.

Because Calais-Frethun is outside town, plan the final leg before you book: a taxi into central Calais takes around 15 minutes, or connect onward by TER if your final destination is not Calais itself.

Passenger rail and the Channel Tunnel shuttle are different products

LeShuttle carries vehicles through the Channel Tunnel from its own terminal outside Calais and does not take foot passengers. If you are travelling without a car, book a passenger rail itinerary through Calais-Ville or Calais-Frethun, and treat LeShuttle purely as the option for driving across.

Book the station that matches your destination

Search SNCF Connect for the exact station your itinerary lists, not just "Calais". A TGV from Paris will normally arrive at Calais-Frethun, while a regional trip from Lille or Boulogne is more likely to use Calais-Ville. Check the final station on your ticket before you buy, especially if you are timing a ferry or Channel crossing connection around it.

Frequently asked questions

Which station should I choose for Calais?

Calais-Ville is the town-centre station, so choose it when that location works for your stay. Choose an itinerary ending at Calais-Fréthun only when its onward leg still gives you an arrival you are comfortable with. Judge the whole door-to-door trip, not the city name alone.

Is Calais-Fréthun the same as Calais-Ville?

No. Calais-Fréthun and Calais-Ville are separate stations. If a result switches one for the other, treat it as a different itinerary, not a harmless label change, then compare the final leg before choosing.

Can a foot passenger use LeShuttle to reach Calais?

No. LeShuttle does not permit foot passengers on its shuttles. Use a passenger rail itinerary when travelling on foot, then check the final Calais station and onward connection.

Should I buy one ticket for a Calais connection?

Prefer one booking when it gives you a workable journey, but do not force it if a separate itinerary suits you better. When splitting the booking, weigh the connection margin and the risk of a delay against the price.

What should I check before booking a train to Calais?

Use a two-step check. First remove options that end at the wrong station for your stay. Then compare the remaining itineraries by timetable, fare conditions and final connection, so a low headline price does not hide an awkward finish.
