Travelling from Paris to Malmö by train is possible, but it is not a direct journey. The most useful plan is to treat Hamburg as the key halfway point, then continue through Denmark and across the Öresund link to Malmö C.

Expect a long travel day if you do it in one push. Many travellers will be more comfortable splitting the trip in Hamburg, or using a Hamburg-to-Malmö night train when the dates work.

No Direct Train, Plan for Two Major Legs

There is no direct train from Paris to Malmö. Plan at least two major legs and usually several changes.

The Most Practical Route From Paris to Malmö

The simplest route is Paris to Hamburg, then Hamburg to Malmö via Copenhagen.

From Paris, one strong option is Eurostar from Paris Gare du Nord to Köln Hbf. Eurostar runs this direct Paris-Cologne service in around 3 hours 20 minutes, with fares advertised from EUR 35. From Cologne, continue north on Deutsche Bahn services toward Hamburg.

Another option is to leave from Paris Est on TGV or ICE services toward Germany, then connect to Hamburg through a hub such as Frankfurt, Mannheim, Karlsruhe, or Stuttgart. The exact route depends on the timetable for your date.

Once you reach Hamburg, the 2026 picture is much better than it used to be. Snälltåget introduced a direct daytime Hamburg-Copenhagen-Malmö-Stockholm train from 4 May 2026. Its published preliminary timetable shows Hamburg Hbf at 09:51 and Malmö C at 15:35 on the northbound service. If that direct train does not fit your date or time, search for a Hamburg-Copenhagen service and then continue from Copenhagen to Malmö. Öresundståg runs the familiar cross-border trains between Denmark and southern Sweden, and Malmö C is only a short final hop from the Copenhagen area.

Day Train or Overnight Train

A full daytime journey is possible, but it is a serious travel day.

The main advantage is control. You can see each connection, keep your luggage with you, and arrive in Malmö the same evening if the timetable lines up. The downside is that a delay in Germany can make a tight Hamburg or Copenhagen connection stressful.

The easier plan is often to sleep in Hamburg and continue the next morning. This turns the route into two sensible travel days: Paris to Hamburg, then Hamburg to Malmö.

There is also a useful overnight option on some dates. Snälltåget's 2026 night train from Germany to Sweden stops at Hamburg Hbf and Malmö C. Its published preliminary timetable shows Hamburg Hbf at 23:59 and Malmö C at 06:30. This can be ideal if you reach Hamburg in the evening, but it does not run every night throughout the year. Check the exact departure dates before building your trip around it.

Tickets, Fares, and Booking

Book Paris to Malmö as a route with several moving parts, not as one through ticket.

For the Paris-to-Germany leg, compare Eurostar, Deutsche Bahn, and SNCF/TGV options. Eurostar advertises Paris-Cologne fares from EUR 35 on its official page, but the fare you see depends on date, demand, and seat availability.

For the Germany-to-Sweden leg, check Snälltåget directly if you want the Hamburg-Copenhagen-Malmö day train or the Hamburg-Malmö night train. Snälltåget publishes example times but tells travellers to use its online booking for current times and prices.

For Hamburg-to-Copenhagen alternatives, Deutsche Bahn is a useful planning tool because it shows Germany-heavy connections, live forecasts, transfer information, and later alternatives. If your journey ends in Copenhagen, search Öresundståg or a local Danish or Swedish planner for the final Copenhagen-Malmö section.

If you buy separate tickets, leave a generous buffer at Hamburg. A missed connection on separate tickets can be your problem, even when each train is officially bookable.

Interrail and Eurail Passes

An Interrail or Eurail Global Pass can be useful for Paris to Malmö, but it does not remove the need for reservations.

The important rule is simple: the pass is your travel right, not your guaranteed seat.

Pass holders should expect mandatory reservations on many high-speed and night-train parts of this journey. Eurostar pass travel on routes between France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany uses pass-holder fares that are subject to availability. Paris-Germany TGV and ICE reservations are also mandatory for pass holders. Snälltåget reservations are mandatory from May 2026.

The Hamburg-Copenhagen corridor is more flexible on some services. Interrail lists Hamburg-Copenhagen Eurocity Express and Railjet reservations as optional for most of the year, but required from 26 June to 31 August. For Öresundståg between Copenhagen and Malmö, reservations are optional. Öresundståg no longer sells seat tickets on its trains.

For a pass trip, reserve the Paris departure first. Then lock in any Snälltåget or night-train section. The regional Copenhagen-Malmö hop is the least complicated part of the route.

Stations and Transfers

The stations matter on this route because Paris and Copenhagen each have more than one rail hub.

In Paris, Eurostar to Cologne leaves from Paris Gare du Nord. TGV and ICE options toward Germany may use Paris Est. Do not assume both options use the same station when comparing itineraries.

In Germany, you may change at Köln Hbf, Frankfurt, Mannheim, Karlsruhe, or another Deutsche Bahn hub before reaching Hamburg Hbf. Hamburg is the station to focus on when connecting into Denmark and Sweden.

Snälltåget's 2026 day train calls at Copenhagen Syd and Malmö C. Öresundståg services cover the Copenhagen-Malmö cross-border corridor and are useful when your main itinerary gets you only as far as Copenhagen.

Malmö C is the main arrival station for central Malmö. It is the station you want for the old town, most city hotels, and onward Swedish trains.

Practical Tips Before You Book

Check the live timetable shortly before booking because this route crosses several busy rail networks.

The Germany-Denmark-Sweden section is especially sensitive to track work. Snälltåget marks its 2026 times as preliminary, and Öresundståg tells travellers to check current times because rail work can force quick changes.

Keep your transfer times realistic. A ten-minute connection may look efficient in a planner, but it is a poor choice with luggage after several international trains.

Carry valid travel documents. Öresundståg currently notes border controls for passengers entering Sweden across the Öresund Bridge, and Snälltåget tells passengers on its international service to carry accepted ID documents.

For most travellers, the best version of Paris to Malmö by train is not the absolute fastest one. It is the one with enough slack that a delay in Germany does not ruin the final leg into Sweden.
