MOB and MVR, both part of the same GoldenPass group based in Montreux, run some of the best-known scenic trains in Switzerland. Between them they cover the GoldenPass Express, the classic GoldenPass Panoramic and Belle Époque trains, and two mountain rack railways above Lake Geneva.
GoldenPass Express and GoldenPass Line
The GoldenPass Express runs the full length from Montreux to Interlaken Ost, changing gauge en route so passengers stay in their seats rather than changing trains at Zweisimmen. The older GoldenPass Panoramic and Belle Époque trains cover the shorter Montreux to Zweisimmen section of the same corridor. The Belle Époque carriage is styled after early 20th-century first class.
Seat reservation is optional on all three trains, in either class, and strongly recommended in busy periods. It is only compulsory for Prestige class, at CHF 49 per seat, and you still need a valid first-class ticket on top of that. Reserving a normal seat costs CHF 20 per person on the GoldenPass Express, or CHF 10 on the Panoramic and Belle Époque trains, whatever the length of your journey or your fare category. Reservations on this line only cover travel between Montreux, Gstaad, Zweisimmen and Interlaken Ost. The mountain rack lines described below take no advance seat reservations at all.
GA travelcards, half-fare cards, the Junior Card, the Swiss Travel Pass, and Eurail and Interrail passes are all valid for travel on MOB trains. None of those covers the seat reservation fee itself, which you pay separately regardless of what ticket or pass you are travelling on.
Full one-way second-class fares run from CHF 56 Montreux to Interlaken Ost, CHF 28 Montreux to Gstaad, CHF 48 Spiez to Montreux, and CHF 37 Interlaken to Gstaad. First class roughly doubles each figure. All prices are in Swiss francs.
Montreux to Rochers-de-Naye
This is a rack railway, not a normal adhesion train, climbing straight out of Montreux to more than 2,000 metres, with Lake Geneva spread out below by the top. It is a separate service from the GoldenPass Line and does not take advance seat reservations. Skiers use it in winter; hikers and sightseers use it the rest of the year, with a restaurant at the summit either way.
Vevey to Les Pléiades
The second rack railway starts at Vevey on the lakeshore, pauses at Blonay, and climbs to Les Pléiades at 1,348 metres, with views over both Lake Geneva and Lake Neuchâtel from the top. Like the Rochers-de-Naye line, it runs independently of the GoldenPass Express and Panoramic services, with its own restaurant and hiking or skiing access depending on season.
Planning a trip on the network
For the through GoldenPass Express experience between Montreux and Interlaken, book your seat reservation ahead, particularly in summer, since a ticket alone does not guarantee a seat. Heading up to Rochers-de-Naye or Les Pléiades instead, skip the reservation planning altogether: just check the timetable for your date, since these mountain lines run to ordinary schedules rather than the GoldenPass Line's reservation system.

Is seat reservation compulsory on the GoldenPass Express?
No, not for standard 1st or 2nd class. It is optional but recommended, especially in busy periods, and costs CHF 20 per person. Only Prestige class makes reservation compulsory, at CHF 49 per seat plus a valid 1st-class ticket.
Which passes are valid on MOB trains?
The Swiss GA travelcard, half-fare card, Junior Card, Swiss Travel Pass, and Eurail and Interrail passes are all valid for travel. None of them covers the separate seat reservation fee on the GoldenPass Line.
Can I reserve a seat on the train to Rochers-de-Naye or Les Pléiades?
No. Advance seat reservations only exist on the GoldenPass Line between Montreux, Gstaad, Zweisimmen and Interlaken Ost. The Rochers-de-Naye and Les Pléiades rack railways do not offer reservations.
What is the difference between the GoldenPass Express and GoldenPass Panoramic?
