Regionalverkehr Bern-Solothurn (RBS) is one of two operators behind S-Bahn Bern, the commuter rail network that has linked the Swiss capital to its surrounding region since 2005. RBS trains use their own underground station beneath Bern, separate from the SBB platforms above. Travellers changing between a mainline train and an RBS service need to follow the signage down to the RBS level.
Where RBS trains run
RBS lines fan out from Bern to Worb, Unterzollikofen, Jegenstorf and on to Solothurn, sharing the S-Bahn Bern brand with BLS, which runs the other lines in the network. A new RBS station at Bern is under construction as part of the wider Zukunft Bahnhof Bern project, alongside further works around the city's rail hub. This is a network built for commuting and local travel around Bern and Solothurn. It is not for long-distance trips.
Tickets and fares
RBS tickets run on the Libero tariff system, which covers the cantons of Bern and Solothurn. Kurzstreckenbillette cover short hops of up to 30 minutes within cities such as Bern and Solothurn, while standard Einzelbillette are priced by zone and stay valid for 60 to 180 minutes depending on how many zones you cross. Buy six fares of the same type together as a Mehrfahrtenkarte and pay 10% less than six single tickets. A Libero Tageskarte gives unlimited travel in your chosen zones for a day, which is worth it once you make more than two trips.
Swiss half-fare and GA travelcard holders get the standard national discounts on RBS services. The Fairtiq app charges the best available fare automatically across the whole GA area once you swipe in, so it suits an occasional or first-time rider who does not want to work out zones in advance. RBS also runs its own service points at Bern, Jegenstorf, Worb and Worblaufen stations, useful if you need advice on a longer Swiss or international journey.
Bikes, dogs and children
Bikes travel in RBS trains and buses when there is room. You load and supervise your own bike, and pay half the price of a single ticket or buy a nationwide bike day pass for CHF 15. Dogs over 30 cm at the shoulder need their own ticket, usually a half-price single, while smaller pets travel free in a bag, box or basket. Children under 6 ride free, and those aged 6 to 15 need a discounted ticket unless they are travelling with a Junior or children's card.
