Aargau Verkehr (AVA) connects people and regions between Zofingen and Zurich Altstetten with its rail lines and bus operations. Around 28 million passengers a year use AVA services, most of them on short regional hops rather than long journeys.

Where AVA trains run

AVA's core rail lines are the Wynental-Suhrentalbahn (WSB), running from Aarau out to Menziken and Schöftland, and the Bremgarten-Dietikon-Bahn, a separate line further north near Zurich. Both are built for commuting rather than covering distance, so do not expect fast connections between the two. Ticket sales points sit at Aarau, Berikon-Widen, Bremgarten, Muhen, Menziken, Reinach, Schöftland and Suhr, useful if you need help working out a fare in person or buying a season ticket. Aargau Verkehr also runs Limmat Bus and the Limmattalbahn tram line as separate subsidiaries around Zurich Altstetten.

Tickets and fares

Aargau Verkehr does not publish its own ticket prices. Fares follow national Swiss tariffs and those of the relevant Tarifverbund, so check sbb.ch or the SBB Mobile app for the exact price, or the operator's online shop for season tickets. AVA lines run on a self-check system: you are responsible for holding a valid ticket, including any extra ticket for children, dogs or bikes, and a surcharge applies if an inspector finds you without one. That makes it worth buying before you board rather than assuming you can pay an inspector directly.

First class, bikes and other rules

All S14 and S17 services carry first-class compartments, but you have to buy the upgrade in advance at a sales point or ticket machine. It cannot be bought on board. Half-fare and GA travelcard holders pay half price for the upgrade, which makes it a cheap way to guarantee a seat on a busy commute. Bikes travel self-loaded for a discounted half-price ticket, or you can buy a nationwide bike day pass for CHF 14. Children under 6 travel free, and those aged 6 to 15.99 need a discounted half-fare ticket unless they are travelling with a Junior or children's card, which lets them ride free with an accompanying adult.
