The Vigezzina-Centovalli railway links Domodossola, in the Italian Val d'Ossola, with Locarno, on Lake Maggiore in Switzerland, running through the Centovalli and the Valle Vigezzo. FART runs the line on the Swiss side from Locarno, and SSIF operates the Italian side.
Route and stations
The line calls at around 25 stations between Domodossola and Locarno, including Santa Maria Maggiore, Malesco, Camedo on the border, Verdasio, Intragna and Tegna, before reaching Locarno. The route crosses three named landscapes: the Val d'Ossola, the Valle Vigezzo and the Centovalli, ending at Lake Maggiore.
Tickets and booking
Buy online through the railway's own booking site, at the ticket office in Domodossola, which is open every day, or at Santa Maria Maggiore station. On the Swiss side, tickets are sold at the FART ticket office in Locarno, open Monday to Friday, or from automatic ticket machines at stations. If both offices are closed, you can still buy a ticket onboard the train.
Fares and passes
Children under 6 travel free, paying only a seat reservation if they need a seat. Children aged 6 to 16 get 50 percent off the ticket price, though the reservation fee and any panoramic supplement are still charged in full. Dogs and small pets travel free, and larger dogs get 50 percent off.
A Swiss general travel card (AG), a Swiss half-fare card holder's day pass, or a Swiss Travel Pass allows free travel on this line, but a seat reservation, and any panoramic supplement, still has to be paid. The Ticino Ticket, given to overnight guests in Ticino, allows free travel on the Locarno to Camedo section and a 20 percent discount on tickets between Camedo and Domodossola, bought at the FART ticket office in Locarno.
Practical notes
A seat reservation is compulsory on this line, and some services carry a panoramic supplement on top of the ticket and reservation. This is a cross-border route between Switzerland and Italy, so check the current reservation and supplement cost with the ticket office before you book.
