Chemins de fer du Jura (CJ) runs a mostly narrow-gauge railway across the Swiss Jura, formed in 1944 from the merger of four historic local companies. The network today totals close to 89 km of track. Most of that is metre-gauge, with a shorter standard-gauge section around Porrentruy.
Where CJ trains run
CJ lines link Tavannes to Le Noirmont, Saignelégier to La Chaux-de-Fonds, Saignelégier to Glovelier, and Porrentruy to Bonfol, covering the Franches-Montagnes plateau and the Jura valleys around Tavannes and Porrentruy. Works are closing the line between Tramelan and Les Breuleux from 8 September to 10 October 2026, so travellers on that stretch need the replacement bus during those dates. Staffed ticket offices operate at Saignelégier and Tramelan stations, useful for planning a longer trip in person.
Tickets and fares
The Régio CJ day pass covers unlimited travel on the CJ train and bus network for one day: CHF 24 in second class or CHF 40 in first class for adults, dropping to CHF 12 or CHF 20 with a Swiss half-fare card or for children aged 6 to 16. Buy a multi-day Régio CJ pass and you get 6 day passes for the price of 5, valid for a year from purchase, which suits anyone planning more than one trip on the network. MOBIJU buses, Noctambus night buses and special excursions fall outside Régio CJ validity, so check your exact route before relying on the pass. CJ buses on lines 22.123 and 22.131 no longer sell tickets on board, so buy before you travel on those routes.
Heritage and seasonal trains
CJ also runs heritage excursions, including a steam train through the Franches-Montagnes and the Train des Horlogers, a historic 1953 train from Glovelier or La Chaux-de-Fonds to Le Noirmont with a stop at the Musée de la Boîte de Montre. These are seasonal, ticketed separately from regular CJ travel, and worth booking ahead in summer. Since 14 May 2026, the Swiss general travelcard and other day passes are no longer valid on the St-Imier to Chasseral line, so travellers on that route need a half-fare ticket instead.
