SZU is the operator behind two of Zürich's most useful short escapes: the S4 into the Sihltal and the S10 up to Uetliberg, both starting at Zürich HB. Neither line goes far in distance, but each solves a different traveller need, so it helps to know which one you actually want.
Sihltal line (S4)
The S4 runs from Zürich HB to Sihlwald, tracing the Sihl river south of the city. It is the regional commuter line, useful for reaching towns along the valley rather than a single headline destination, and it is the one to take if Sihlwald forest or the villages along the way are your actual goal.
Uetliberg line (S10)
The S10 climbs from Zürich HB to Uetliberg, the hill overlooking the city on its western side. This is the classic short trip for a view over Zürich and the lake without leaving the city's own transport network, and it is worth timing around clear weather rather than treating it as an any-day errand.
Felseneggbahn cable car
Beyond the two train lines, SZU also runs the Felseneggbahn, a cable car from Adliswil up to Felsenegg. It carried more than 300,000 passengers in 2025, and it pairs naturally with a Uetliberg visit if you want to walk the ridge between the two viewpoints rather than taking the same train back down. A Zimmerbergbus route rounds out the network along the left shore of Lake Zürich and through the Sihl valley.

SZU is a partner in Zürich's ZVV transport network rather than running a separate fare system, so a standard ZVV ticket or pass covers the S4, the S10 and the Felseneggbahn cable car. Fares are in Swiss francs. That also means there is no separate SZU-only ticket to hunt for: if you already hold a Zürich city travel ticket that covers the relevant zones, it should work on these trains and the cable car without buying anything extra.
A long history, a small network
SZU's story goes back to 1835, when the first service was a stagecoach line from Zürich via Langnau am Albis to Zug, long before either the Sihltal or Uetliberg railway existed. Around 280 staff now run the current network of two train lines, one cable car and one bus route, together carrying roughly 27 million passenger journeys a year, small in track length but heavily used because it sits right inside the city's daily commuting pattern.
