Which station to use

Gijón-Sanz Crespo, on calle Sanz Crespo, is the city's main station, with long-distance, Media Distancia and Cercanías C1, C4 and C5 trains. It is open from 05:00 to 00:30, has step-free access, ticket machines and a ticket office, and Renfe's Acerca assistance service. It is a provisional station: an underground station is planned, but Sanz Crespo is where trains stop today.

From the station to the centre

EMTUSA city buses 1, 6 and 12 stop at Acuario, Museo del Ferrocarril and Pedro Duro, beside the station, and run to the L'Humedal bus interchange at the edge of the centre, every 12 to 20 minutes on weekday daytimes. Line 18 also passes the station on its way into the centre and on to Begoña. Line 16 starts at the station but heads east to Vega, not into the centre. A single ticket costs €1.50. The Plaza Mayor and the old fishermen's quarter of Cimadevilla lie north-east of there, and the beach of San Lorenzo is further east along the bay.

Christmas and New Year

On 24 and 31 December 2026 there is no 18:25 Avlo from Gijón, so the last train to Madrid leaves at 15:28, and nothing arrives from Alicante at 22:50. On 25 December and 1 January the first train to Madrid is the 08:53 AVE, and no train arrives from Madrid before 18:43.

Tickets

Long-distance tickets are sold on renfe.com, in the Renfe app and at the station's long-distance desk. For Cercanías, buy from the vending machines or ticket office and pass through the gates with the ticket or a contactless bank card. If you pay with a contactless bank card, tap in and tap out at the gates, or you are charged the maximum fare for the whole network.

Rail passes and reservations

As of October 2026, Interrail passes cover Renfe trains, with a compulsory paid reservation of €10 for the AVE in second class, €6.50 for Alvia and €4 for Media Distancia. Avlo is not on Interrail's reservation list, so pass holders should plan on the AVE or Alvia, not the 18:25 Avlo. Regional and Cercanías trains need no reservation.
