Irun is the Spanish end of the Madrid line, and its Renfe station, Irún, is where Alvia, Intercity and Cercanías trains arrive. French trains start at Hendaye.

Which station to use

Renfe's Irún station, on Geltoki kalea, is the one for Madrid, Vitoria-Gasteiz, Burgos and San Sebastián. Euskotren, the Basque regional railway, has its own stations in Irun: Irun on Paseo de Colón, Ficoba-Irun, Belaskoenea-Irun and Bentak-Irun. They are separate from the Renfe station, and the Euskotren line goes on to Hendaye.

From the station into town

The town hall and the old centre are on Plaza San Juan Harria, east of the Renfe station. Irunbus line L1 (towards Zaisa) stops outside the station at Geltoki-Estación and reaches the San Juan stop by the square, running every 15 minutes from Monday to Saturday and every 30 minutes on Sundays and public holidays. On the way it stops at Colón 43, beside the Euskotren station Irun on Paseo de Colón. That station serves the Topo, not Renfe trains, and is closer to Plaza San Juan Harria than the Renfe station is.

Trains to Madrid and the Basque Country

Times are as of October 2026. Alvia and Intercity trains start or end at Irún and call at San Sebastián, Vitoria-Gasteiz, Burgos and Valladolid.

  • To Madrid Chamartín-Clara Campoamor: Alvia trains leave at 08:10 and 16:17 every day and arrive at 13:51 and 22:20, in 5 hours 41 minutes and 6 hours 3 minutes. On most Sundays an Intercity also leaves at 13:04 and arrives at 19:39.
  • From Madrid: Alvia at 06:55 arrives at 13:02, Intercity at 14:50 arrives at 21:02 on weekdays and most Sundays, and Alvia at 17:48 arrives at 23:30.
  • San Sebastián: the Alvia takes 23 to 26 minutes.
  • Vitoria-Gasteiz: 2 hours 11 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes by Alvia. A Regional Exprés leaves at 05:45 from Monday to Saturday, not on public holidays, and reaches Vitoria-Gasteiz at 08:20 and Miranda de Ebro at 08:56.
  • Burgos: 3 hours 40 minutes to 4 hours 1 minute by Alvia.
  • Valladolid Campo Grande: 4 hours 31 minutes to 4 hours 52 minutes by Alvia.

Cercanías C1 and the Topo to San Sebastián

Two local trains run to San Sebastián. Renfe's Cercanías C1 leaves Irún about 20 to 25 times a day, from 05:12 to 22:34, and takes 33 to 35 minutes. From San Sebastián the last C1 leaves at 23:39. Euskotren's Topo runs from the station on Paseo de Colón every 15 minutes on weekdays from 05:37 to 21:07 and every 30 minutes on Sundays, and takes 34 to 37 minutes. It ends in Donostia at Amara, which is not Renfe's San Sebastián-Donostia station.

Crossing to Hendaye and France

As of October 2026, no train from Irún goes into France. Euskotren's Topo runs from Irun on Paseo de Colón to Hendaye station in 4 minutes, every 30 minutes until late evening. On foot, the walk across the border takes about 30 minutes. French trains leave from Hendaye: direct TGV INOUI trains reach Paris Montparnasse in 4 hours 49 minutes at best, and Bordeaux takes 2 hours 32 minutes to 3 hours 21 minutes.

Christmas and New Year

On 24 and 31 December the 14:50 Intercity and the 17:48 Alvia from Madrid do not run, so the last long-distance train into Irún is the 06:55 Alvia arriving at 13:02. On 25 December and 1 January the 14:50 Intercity does not run. The Regional Exprés at 05:45 does not run on 25 December, 1 January or 6 January.

Tickets

Buy Renfe tickets on renfe.com or in the Renfe app, which add no management fee, or at the station machines and ticket office. The Topo is Euskotren's and needs its own ticket, sold from machines in its stations and validated before travel: a single from Irun to Hendaye costs €1.95 and to Donostia Amara €2.90 (2026 fares). A Passbask ticket covers Euskotren to Hendaye and the French regional train on to Bayonne for €14.40 for an adult.

Rail passes and reservations

As of October 2026, Interrail passes are valid on Renfe trains. Alvia and Intercity trains need a paid reservation of €6.50 in second class. The Regional Exprés carries a €4 reservation that is not always required, and Cercanías C1 trains need none. Euskotren is not part of the Interrail network, so buy a ticket for the Topo. In France, a TGV INOUI needs a reservation of €10 to €20.
