The Alvia from Almería to Madrid is the only direct train to the capital, leaving the Estación Intermodal on Plaza de la Estación once a day. Rail and the bus station share the building, and Granada has five trains a day each way.
Which station to use
Book Almería, the Estación Intermodal. It is open daily from 05:30 to 01:00. The bus station sits in the same building and is open daily from 05:00 to 00:00, so a change between bus and train needs no transfer across town.
Trains from Almería
Times are Renfe's as of October 2026.
- Madrid: the Alvia leaves Almería at 07:54, calls at Huércal-Viator, Guadix, Granada, Antequera AV and Córdoba, and reaches Madrid Puerta de Atocha-Almudena Grandes at 14:38. The return leaves Atocha at 16:40 and arrives in Almería at 23:30, or 23:28 from 13 December. The Intercity to Madrid has been suspended since 6 September 2026 because of works to adapt the line for the rail motorway (Autopista Ferroviaria), and Renfe has set no date for its return.
- Granada: five trains a day run each way, one of them the Alvia. They take about 2 hours 40 minutes to 3 hours 10 minutes. The first leaves Almería at 05:59 and the last arrives from Granada at 00:52. All call at Guadix, and the slower ones also stop at Gádor, Gérgal, Fiñana, Benalúa de Guadix and Iznalloz.
- Linares-Baeza: the train no longer runs. Renfe replaces it by road, one service each way a day: Almería 16:30 to Linares-Baeza 20:29, and Linares-Baeza 12:00 to Almería 15:59, with a timetable published to 8 November 2026. Neither connects with a same-day train to Madrid, so for Madrid take the Alvia.
- Seville and Málaga: no direct train runs to either city.
From the station into the centre
Line L1, Casco Histórico, links the Estación Intermodal with Rambla-Celia Viñas in the historic centre. On weekdays a bus leaves the station about every 22 minutes, the first at 07:22 and the last at 22:46. Saturday buses run about every 20 minutes from 07:58 to 22:32, and Sunday and holiday buses about every 40 minutes from 08:28 to 22:22. A single ticket costs €1.05, paid to the driver.
A late arrival is the usual trap. The Alvia from Madrid reaches Almería after the last L1 bus has left. Since 20 October 2026 Almería's city buses have also been on an indefinite strike. Some lines run minimum services only, so allow for a taxi.
Works and holidays
The Alvia and the Granada trains run normally during the Intercity suspension. On 25 December 2026 the Alvia and the 05:59 to Granada do not run; the other Granada trains do. On 24 and 31 December the last train from Granada, due at 00:52, does not run. The Alvia does not run on 1 January 2027. Renfe has not yet published January times for the Granada trains.
Tickets
Buy on renfe.com, in the Renfe app, or at the ticket offices and ticket machines in the station. Alvia tickets are in the passenger's name, and you need photo ID with you: a DNI, driving licence, residence card or passport. Renfe allows payment on board only exceptionally, on trains that permit it, so buy before you travel.
Rail passes and reservations
As of October 2026, Interrail lists a reservation fee of €6.50 in second class and €10 in first class for Alvia trains. Pass holders need a paid reservation for the Alvia to Granada and Madrid. Interrail lists €4 for second-class Media Distancia, which covers the other Granada trains, so reserve one before boarding.

Frequently asked questions
How do I get from Almería to Madrid by train?
Take the daily Alvia: it leaves Almería at 07:54 and reaches Madrid Puerta de Atocha-Almudena Grandes at 14:38, calling at Granada and Córdoba. The return leaves Atocha at 16:40 and reaches Almería at 23:30, or 23:28 from 13 December. The Almería to Madrid Intercity has been suspended since 6 September 2026 and Renfe has given no return date.
How long does the train from Almería to Granada take?
Between about 2 hours 40 minutes and 3 hours 10 minutes, depending on the train and how many stops it makes. Five trains a day run each way, and the Alvia takes about 3 hours.
Do I need ID to board the Alvia from Almería?
Yes. Alvia tickets are in the passenger's name, and Renfe asks you to carry valid photo ID, such as a DNI, driving licence, residence card or passport. ID checks can happen during check-in or on board.
Can I take a direct train from Almería to Seville or Málaga?
No. The only long-distance train leaving Almería is the Alvia to Madrid, which stops at Huércal-Viator, Guadix, Granada, Antequera AV and Córdoba before Madrid Puerta de Atocha-Almudena Grandes.
Is Almería station open when the late trains arrive?
Yes, it is open daily until 01:00, which covers the Alvia from Madrid and the last Granada train at 00:52 (not on 24 and 31 December). The last L1 city bus leaves the station at 22:46 on weekdays, so a late arrival into the centre needs another way in.
