Trieste Centrale, on Piazza della Libertà, is the station for the city. Miramare serves the castle, and Trieste Aeroporto, 30 minutes up the coast, serves the airport.
Which station to use
Get off at Trieste Centrale. Miramare and Trieste Aeroporto sit on the coastal line and matter only for Miramare Castle and for flights.
Trains to Trieste Centrale
Trenitalia runs Frecciarossa trains from Milan and Rome via Venezia Mestre, Intercity trains from Rome, and regional trains along the coast from Venice and Portogruaro and inland to Udine and Tarvisio. By train from Venice it is about 1 hour 35 minutes to Trieste Aeroporto, with Trieste Centrale about 30 minutes further on. Regional timetables run from 14 June to 12 December 2026.
Italo runs one daily train between Trieste and Rome, which takes about 6 hours. ÖBB runs one Railjet a day in each direction between Trieste and Vienna, through Udine, Villach, Klagenfurt and Graz. In the 2026 timetable it leaves Trieste Centrale at 14:22 (14:37 on Saturdays and Sundays) and reaches Graz at 18:41 and Vienna at 21:07.
Two trains a day also link Trieste with Ljubljana, changing at Villa Opicina.
From the station into the centre
The station stands on Piazza della Libertà, and the city buses stop on the square and at the neighbouring Largo Città di Santos. Line 8 runs from the station along Corso Cavour and the Rive to Piazza dell'Unità d'Italia, the main square. Line 24 runs through Via Mazzini and along the Rive to San Giusto, where the castle and cathedral stand. Line 30 goes through Via Roma and Via Mazzini to the Riva del Mandracchio and on to San Vito.
A 60-minute ticket costs €1.50, a 75-minute ticket €1.85 and a day ticket €3.35 (2026 fares). Buy a paper ticket from a machine, use the app, or tap a contactless card or phone on board.
Miramare
Miramare is the stop for Miramare Castle and its park, about ten minutes from Trieste Centrale. Only about six regional trains a day stop there, so check that your train calls at Miramare before boarding. From the station exit, follow the signs for roughly 150 metres to the park's side entrance. On Saturdays and Sundays a single from Trieste Centrale starts at €1.50 under the Weekend FVG promotion.
Trieste Aeroporto
Trieste Aeroporto is the airport's railway stop at Ronchi dei Legionari, between Cervignano and Monfalcone. Around 70 trains a day call here, counting both directions: Frecciarossa to Milan and Rome, Intercity to Rome, and every regional train on the Venice and Udine lines. Italo stops too. An elevated walkway leads from the station to the terminal.
The stop is not in the city. Trieste Centrale is about half an hour away by regional train.
Rail passes and reservations
With an Interrail Pass, regional trains into Trieste need no reservation. As of October 2026, Frecciarossa needs a €13 reservation and Intercity a €3 one, in both classes. The Railjet to Vienna needs a mandatory supplement of €10 in second class or €15 in first. Italo is not part of the pass, so its Trieste train needs its own ticket.
Things that catch travellers out
Buses replace trains between Trieste Centrale and Villa Opicina from 06:00 on 17 October to 21:00 on 18 October 2026, and again from 06:00 on 24 October to 21:00 on 25 October. Trains to and from Ljubljana still run, but you ride a bus for this stretch, expect delays, and the buses take no bikes or pets (guide dogs excepted).
The Italo to Rome and the Railjet to Vienna each run once a day, so a missed departure costs the day.
