Take a mainline train to Napoli Centrale, then change at Napoli Garibaldi for EAV to Sorrento; rail passes do not cover the final leg.
Sorrento has one useful train station
Book Sorrento station on EAV's Napoli to Sorrento line. It is the terminus and the practical rail arrival for the town; Trenitalia and Italo trains go no farther. The station is in central Sorrento near Piazza Tasso. Marina Piccola port is below the town centre.
That difference matters with luggage. Taxis serve the station, and the SITA Sud bus terminal at Piazza De Curtis is beside it. For Marina Piccola, take a local bus or taxi, or walk to the paid lift by Villa Comunale if it suits your route. The ferry pier is not part of the rail station. Check your accommodation and onward departure point before deciding to walk.
Long-distance trains require a change in Naples
Book the long-distance leg to Napoli Centrale. The fastest Italo trains take 55 minutes from Roma Termini, 2 hours 42 minutes from Firenze Santa Maria Novella and 4 hours 8 minutes from Milano Centrale. Those are best-case direct times, so compare the exact train, fare and arrival time for your date.
Read the Naples station name before buying. Napoli Afragola is a separate high-speed station outside the centre, and a journey that ends there still needs another train to Napoli Centrale before the EAV leg. A slightly cheaper or faster itinerary is no bargain if you overlook the Afragola arrival.
Napoli Garibaldi is the EAV transfer point
At Napoli Centrale, follow signs for Napoli Garibaldi and the EAV platforms below the main station complex. This is a proper transfer, not a same-platform change. Allow at least 30 minutes, and more if you need a ticket, have heavy luggage or do not know the station.
EAV does not list step-free facilities at Napoli Garibaldi. Passengers with reduced mobility using Campania Express are directed to board at Napoli Porta Nolana instead. Porta Nolana is the preceding origin station, so starting there may also give you time to settle in before the central Naples crowd boards. Check the access arrangements and departure station for your train before travel.
The regular Circumvesuviana suits flexible trips
Choose the regular EAV train for the lowest fare and more departure options. Trains leave Napoli Garibaldi for Sorrento roughly every 36 minutes through much of the day, and scheduled journeys usually take about 69 to 74 minutes. A single costs €4.60.
Seats are not reserved, and busy trains can be crowded. Keep bags closed and in sight, and do not count on sitting together. The regular service makes sense when price, a flexible departure or an intermediate stop matters most. Check the stopping pattern because services do not all call at the same stations.
Campania Express trades frequency for comfort
Campania Express has air conditioning, selected stops and a guaranteed seat when you reserve online. From 28 March 2026, the timetable has four departures in each direction per day. The scheduled journey takes about 69 minutes from Napoli Garibaldi to Sorrento and 75 minutes in the opposite direction.
This is a comfort upgrade, not a faster train. A single costs €15, compared with €4.60 on the regular service. Choose it when air conditioning and a reserved seat justify the price, especially with luggage, but do not expect dedicated luggage storage. Check that one of the limited departures fits your mainline connection before paying more.
EAV tickets are separate from mainline tickets
On a journey you arrange yourself, expect to sort out the EAV leg separately from the Trenitalia or Italo ticket. EAV sells paper QR-code tickets and tickets through the GoEav app. You can also use contactless Tap&Go on the Napoli to Sorrento line. Scan a paper QR-code ticket at an enabled gate before travel. With Tap&Go, use the same card or device to tap in and out, or you may be charged the maximum fare.
Campania Express reservations are sold online and at designated EAV infopoints. Some Trenitalia Campania Link offers put Trenitalia and EAV travel in one purchase, but the two transport contracts remain distinct. A missed separate connection may not be protected. Check the ticket product, validation instruction and change conditions before the first train leaves.
Rail passes do not include the EAV leg
Circumvesuviana and Italo are excluded from Eurail and Interrail coverage in Italy. A pass can cover an eligible Trenitalia journey to Naples, but not the EAV train to Sorrento or an Italo train. Buy those tickets separately.
Pass coverage does not remove every cost on Trenitalia. Reservations are compulsory on Frecciarossa and Frecciargento, with a passholder fee of €13 per person per train. A pass alone is not enough. Check the operator and reservation requirement for every mainline segment, then keep the EAV ticket ready as a separate product.
Pompeii and Herculaneum use the same EAV line
For Pompeii, use Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri. Many trains from Sorrento take roughly 39 to 40 minutes, and this stop serves the Porta Marina and Piazza Esedra entrances. Do not get off at a similarly named mainline station without checking your entrance.
For Herculaneum, use Ercolano Scavi. A Sorrento train that calls there takes about 60 minutes, and the archaeological park entrance is a six-minute walk from the station. Stopping patterns vary, so check both the outbound and return trains before leaving Sorrento.
Vesuvio Express runs a separate shuttle from outside Ercolano Scavi towards Mount Vesuvius. It is another timed product, not an automatic rail connection. Confirm the shuttle package, park-entry arrangements and return time before combining Vesuvius with Herculaneum.
The Amalfi Coast continues by bus or ferry
There is no onward railway from Sorrento to Positano, Amalfi or Ravello. SITA Sud buses for Positano and Amalfi leave from the Piazza De Curtis terminal beside Sorrento station. For Ravello, check the onward bus in Amalfi rather than assuming there is a through service.
Ferries leave from Marina Piccola, not the train station. The 2026 schedules include date-limited links from Sorrento to Capri, Positano and Amalfi, but operating periods and weather matter. Choose the bus for a station-side departure or the ferry when the sailing date and sea conditions work. Then allow time to reach the port by local bus, taxi or the lift route from Villa Comunale, and check the live sailing before committing to a same-day connection.
Crowds and late arrivals change the sensible choice
On a busy departure, a guaranteed Campania Express seat may be worth the limited frequency. At quieter times, the regular train gives you more options and costs less. If you board at Napoli Garibaldi, keep essential items with you and put luggage where you can see it.
EAV trains run into the evening, but this is not an overnight railway. Delays, cancellations or engineering work can change the plan. A late mainline arrival on separate tickets is the greatest risk because the next EAV train may not be soon enough. Check the last workable connection on the day and keep money aside for a hotel or alternative transport.
Travel-day checks protect separate connections
Before leaving, check the mainline arrival station, EAV timetable, service notices and any strike information. At Napoli Centrale, follow signs to Garibaldi, confirm that the platform display says Sorrento and complete the QR scan or contactless tap before boarding.
Leave extra margin for a flight, ferry, tour or other fixed commitment. In Sorrento, confirm whether the next leg leaves from the bus terminal beside the station or downhill at Marina Piccola. Keep each ticket and validation rule clear, leave recovery time in Naples and check the final local connection before booking.

Frequently asked questions
Is Sorrento station accessible for wheelchair users?
Sorrento station has motor and sensory accessibility, a lift and a ramp. If you use a wheelchair and a station is inaccessible, including because its lift is out, EAV's on-demand van can take you to the nearest accessible station. For travel from 09:00 to 20:00, request it at least three hours ahead; earlier and later journeys have earlier cut-offs.
Can I take a bicycle on EAV trains to Sorrento?
Request EAV's permission at least three days before travel. On Vesuviane trains, bicycles may travel Monday to Saturday only from 09:30 to 11:30 and 15:00 to 17:00; Sundays and public holidays have no time limit. A non-folding bicycle still depends on the conductor's crowding check, and refusal does not entitle you to a refund.
Can I take a dog on the Circumvesuviana to Sorrento?
Small pets travel free; a medium or large dog needs a validated single ticket for the route. EAV allows one animal per traveller. Carry the required pet documents, and use a lead and muzzle unless a small dog is in a carrier. Pets are barred Monday to Friday from 07:00 to 09:00 and may be refused when crowded. Guide dogs travel free without those limits.
Do children travel free on Campania Express?
Children aged six or younger travel free on Campania Express but do not receive a reserved seat. Do not count on a separate seat for a free-travelling child.
When does EAV refund a Campania Express ticket?
EAV offers a full refund when it cancels Campania Express or causes a delay of more than 30 minutes. Apply through EAV's assistance form and include the ticket's alphanumeric code. If only one leg of a return ticket qualifies, the refund is the difference between the return fare paid and the single fare.
