Choose Firenze S.M.N. for central Florence, then compare Trenitalia and Italo for the departure, fare and flexibility that suit your trip.
Firenze S.M.N. is the default station for most visitors
Search for Firenze when booking, not only Florence. The central station appears as Firenze Santa Maria Novella or Firenze S.M.N. It is the right choice for most visits because it is in the city centre and serves the main high-speed and regional routes.
Read the full station name before paying. Firenze Campo Marte and Firenze Rifredi can also appear in journey results, and either one changes the final local journey. A result labelled only with the city is not precise enough.
Santa Maria Novella is a terminus with 19 passenger tracks. Follow the departure board instead of trying to predict the platform. The station has ticket facilities, waiting areas, food outlets and left luggage, plus a Freccia Lounge and an Italo Club Lounge. Check the opening and access conditions before relying on a lounge or luggage service.
Passenger assistance and barrier-free routes are available to the passenger tracks. Access can still be affected by a temporary lift outage or a difference in height between the platform and train. Arrange assistance for the exact service if reduced mobility matters; a barrier-free route through the station does not always mean level boarding.
Campo Marte and Rifredi need a local travel plan
Campo Marte is north-east of the historic centre, while Rifredi is north of it. Either station can work well when the chosen train calls there, but neither is interchangeable with Santa Maria Novella. Check the location against your accommodation before booking. The expensive mistake is noticing the different name only when the train is due.
Regional trains connect Florence's stations. A standard Florence urban ticket is valid on eligible regional journeys between listed city stations, including S.M.N., Campo Marte and Rifredi. There is one catch: a contactless Tip Tap ticket bought on board does not cover those regional trains. Confirm the ticket medium, next departure and final local leg before accepting an outer-station itinerary.
Allow a margin when a separate local ticket feeds a long-distance booking. Missed-train protection does not apply to every combination of separate tickets. Read the fare conditions, then compare the local train with a tram, bus or taxi if luggage or an early departure makes the extra leg awkward.
High-speed trains link Florence with Italy's main cities
High-speed rail is the straightforward choice for Rome, Milan, Venice, Naples and Bologna. Trenitalia runs Frecciarossa services through Florence, while Italo has its own high-speed network. Both serve Firenze S.M.N. on major routes, so search both when the departure time or price matters.
The fastest direct Italo trains take about 1 hour 25 minutes to Rome, around two hours to Venice and 37 minutes to Bologna. Those times are useful orientation, not a promise for every departure. Open the train details and confirm the stops, station and journey time before fixing an appointment or connection.
Italo runs direct Florence services to Rome, Milan, Naples, Venice and Bologna. Frecciarossa links Florence on the Turin, Milan, Bologna, Rome and Naples axis, as well as the Venice, Florence and Rome axis. Engineering work can change the pattern. The train number and station are more useful than a general route description.
Regional trains cover useful Tuscan routes
Trenitalia regional trains cover many practical trips within Tuscany, including the corridors from Florence to Pisa, Lucca, Arezzo and Siena. Some journeys are direct and others need a change, so inspect the complete itinerary rather than relying on the destination name alone.
Siena is the awkward one. Its railway station is below the historic centre, and trains run from Florence via Empoli. Compare the full journey to your accommodation with the bus before deciding which arrival works better.
Buying the return before setting out saves dealing with it later, but the last useful train matters more than the purchase time. Engineering work can alter regional schedules, and a convenient morning service does not guarantee a good evening return.
Trenitalia and Italo require separate comparisons
Search Trenitalia and Italo separately for a high-speed trip. Their fares, ticket conditions and sales channels differ even when the departure and journey time look similar. Compare the complete price, then read the change and refund rules for the train you would actually take.
Italo advertises Florence to Rome from €14.90. This is an availability-dependent starting fare, not a normal walk-up price. Treat it as a possible advance-price floor. When a flight, tour or separate train comes first, paying more for flexibility may be the better choice.
The class names differ too. Italo uses Smart, Prima Business and Club Executive, while Trenitalia's service levels and onboard facilities depend on the selected train. Upgrade for a specific benefit, then confirm that the exact departure provides it.
Italian ticket rules depend on the train type
Frecciarossa, Intercity and Italo tickets are bookings for the named train shown on the ticket. An Italo ticket must match the route, date, departure time and train number, and it comes with an assigned seat. Trenitalia also shows the selected train and seat details for reserved services. Read the fare's change and refund terms before paying if plans may move.
Regional tickets follow different rules. A Trenitalia Digital Regional Ticket activates automatically at the scheduled departure of the selected train. A single paper regional ticket must be validated before boarding. Look at which format you hold. The digital ticket does not need manual validation, while an unvalidated paper ticket is not valid for travel.
Interrail and Eurail cover participating Trenitalia Regionale, Intercity and Frecce services, but the pass does not include seat reservations. Italo is excluded. On Frecciarossa, pass holders need a compulsory seat reservation that currently costs €13. Confirm the operator, reservation availability and fee when booking because a reservation on its own is not a travel ticket.
Walking is usually simplest from Santa Maria Novella
Start by checking the walking distance when your accommodation is in central Florence. The Duomo is roughly a 10-minute walk from Santa Maria Novella, making the station a practical arrival point for the historic centre when luggage is manageable. Check the route to your exact address because cobbled streets, crowds and heavy bags can make a short distance awkward.
A Florence urban ticket costs €1.70 until 31 July 2026, then €2 from 1 August. It lasts 90 minutes after activation or validation. It covers city buses and trams, as well as eligible regional trains between specified Florence stations. Check the fare and 90-minute validity when you buy, as local transport prices and conditions can change. Tip Tap contactless tickets exclude the regional-train portion, so buy a valid paper or digital urban ticket when the transfer includes rail.
Take tram line T2 for Amerigo Vespucci Airport. It links the airport with central Florence and calls near Santa Maria Novella. Confirm the direction, live service and ticket activation before boarding. For a very early flight, compare the first useful tram with a taxi instead of assuming the daytime pattern applies.
Nightjet gives Florence direct overnight links
Nightjet runs direct overnight trains between Firenze S.M.N. and Munich or Vienna. Choose it when the date and accommodation type fit the trip.
Nightjet offers seats, couchettes and sleepers, with availability varying by category. Confirm the calendar date, station and accommodation before paying. A departure after midnight belongs to the new date, an easy detail to miss when connecting from an evening train.
Build other international trips in a current planner and inspect every change. Separate tickets do not always carry the same missed-connection protection as a qualifying through journey. Read the terms before choosing a short connection merely because the combined fare is lower.
Recheck the exact train before travel
Book a high-speed train earlier when a fixed departure matters or you want an availability-limited fare. Regional tickets follow different rules, but engineering work can still alter the service. Use live information rather than an old timetable screenshot.
Shortly before departure, confirm the operator, train number, Florence station and local transfer. This catches Florence's most expensive station mistake: going to Santa Maria Novella when the ticket names Campo Marte or Rifredi.

Frequently asked questions

Can I enter the Firenze S.M.N. FrecciaLounge with only a regional ticket?
No. A regional ticket alone does not qualify for FrecciaLounge entry. Eligible CartaFreccia travellers with a Freccia ticket or a first-class or Business Freccia season ticket can buy daily access in Florence for €25. Qualifying Gold and Platinum members and certain premium-ticket holders may enter under separate conditions. Check the current charge and your eligibility before travel.
Can I change a Trenitalia Digital Regional Ticket on the day of travel?
Yes. You can change the departure time as often as needed until the selected train's scheduled departure. A change of travel date must be completed by 23:59 on the previous day. Use the updated ticket during inspection.
How long is a Trenitalia paper regional ticket valid after validation?
Once stamped, the paper version is normally valid for four hours, subject to exceptions in regional fares. If it expires while you are already aboard, you may finish that journey to the destination without an intermediate stop.

Yes. Club Executive includes admission to Florence's Italo Club Lounge from 90 minutes before departure. Entry remains subject to the lounge's opening hours and available seating.
