Choose Como San Giovanni for Milano Centrale, Switzerland or Lecco; choose Como Lago for Milano Cadorna and the nearest rail arrival to the ferry.
Choose the exact Como station before paying
Booking searches for Como can show four stops bearing the city name, but Como San Giovanni and Como Lago are the useful central arrivals for most visitors. San Giovanni handles the main line through Chiasso and the route towards Lecco. Como Lago is the terminus of the separate Trenord line from Milano Cadorna.
Search by the full station name, then open the stop details before paying. A city-wide search can also show Como Borghi or Como Camerlata, and the wrong choice can add an unnecessary walk or local transfer.
Plan roughly 15 minutes on foot between San Giovanni and Como Lago. This is a cross-city connection, not a platform change. If you are joining separately booked trains, check the walking route and leave extra time for luggage, mobility needs and traffic crossings.
Como San Giovanni is the default for the main line
Book Como San Giovanni for direct regional trains from Milano Centrale or Milano Porta Garibaldi, for the main cross-border routes through Chiasso, and for the Como to Molteno to Lecco line. This avoids the common mistake of choosing Como Lago for a journey that never uses the Cadorna line.
Direct Trenord and TILO regional services from Milano Centrale take about 40 minutes and normally run about once an hour. From Milano Porta Garibaldi, the S11 takes about an hour, with one through train per hour in the regular pattern. Check your date because engineering work can change the timetable or regular service pattern.
San Giovanni is a short walk from the city centre, but it is not the closest rail arrival to the ferry. The station has a bus stop and assistance for passengers with reduced mobility. If the walk is likely to be difficult, check the current bus route or request assistance before travel. Do not wait until you arrive.
Como Lago is the Cadorna and ferry choice
Choose Como Lago when you are leaving from Milano Cadorna or want to arrive closest to Piazza Cavour, the ferry pontoons and the lower end of the Brunate funicular. The station, the navigation pontoons and Piazza Cavour are close together. Boats and the funicular are only a few minutes away on foot.
The R17 line runs directly between Milano Cadorna and Como Lago in about 60 minutes. A second-class regional ticket is €4.80. Check the exact departure before travelling because engineering work can change the timetable for your date.
Como Lago is a terminus on a different railway from San Giovanni. There is no through train between the two central stations. If your onward train uses San Giovanni, allow for the cross-city walk or local transport before committing to a tight connection.
Milan has three useful regional approaches
Choose the route by combining the Milan departure station, Como arrival station and final walk. The shortest train time is not automatically the quickest door-to-door option.
| Milan departure | Como arrival | Useful journey time | Second-class regional fare | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Milano Centrale | Como San Giovanni | About 40 minutes | From €5.20 | You are near Centrale or need the main line through Como |
| Milano Porta Garibaldi | Como San Giovanni | About 60 minutes | €6.70 | You are already near Garibaldi or on the S11 corridor |
| Milano Cadorna | Como Lago | About 60 minutes | €4.80 | You want the closest rail arrival to central ferries or are near Cadorna |
These second-class regional fares apply to the routes shown. Confirm the exact train, class and fare before paying. In particular, do not compare only the word "Como". Check whether the ticket says Como S. Giovanni or Como Lago.
Switzerland and Lecco use the San Giovanni side
Use Como San Giovanni for the main cross-border services. TILO's RE80 links Locarno, Lugano, Chiasso, Como San Giovanni and Milano Centrale. The S10 links Biasca, Bellinzona, Lugano, Chiasso and Como San Giovanni. International EuroCity trains between Switzerland and Italy also use San Giovanni when they call at Como.
Check the exact stopping pattern before travel. Work on the Milan to Chiasso route can remove or replace calls on particular dates, and not every international train serves the same stations.
The R18 Como to Molteno to Lecco regional line also uses the San Giovanni side of the city. Como Lago is not on that route. If a hotel or ferry makes Como Lago your better final point, include the walk or local connection across Como instead of expecting a through train.
Ticket rules depend on the ticket format
Follow the instructions on the ticket. Trenord digital rail tickets do not require validation. They activate for the selected departure time and are normally valid for six hours. Tap a rechargeable ticket bought at a station on a validator or gate before boarding.
Interrail and Eurail passes are valid on Trenord services other than Malpensa Airport relations, and regional trains do not require a seat reservation. Italy to Switzerland EuroCity trains are different. Pass holders need a compulsory €17 reservation. Confirm the current fee when reserving, and check the selected train in the Rail Planner because a pass alone does not reserve a seat.
Before paying, confirm whether the amount shown is a full ticket fare or a pass-holder reservation fee. That distinction matters more than the booking channel.
Borghi and Camerlata suit specific journeys
Como Borghi is on the R17 line between Milano Cadorna and Como Lago. Choose it only when your accommodation or destination is genuinely closer to Borghi. Otherwise, stay on to Como Lago for the central lakefront.
Como Camerlata needs more care. It is served by both the Cadorna to Como Lago route and the S11 and RE80 side towards San Giovanni, Milan and Switzerland. It can suit a specific address or a journey-planner connection, but it is not the normal arrival for the old town or central ferry pontoons.
For a first visit centred on the old town, lakefront or ferries, choose San Giovanni or Como Lago unless the full address clearly points elsewhere. Recheck the station name before paying. That one step prevents most avoidable Como station mistakes.

Frequently asked questions
What does "Como (tutte le stazioni)" mean in a train search?
It means "Como, all stations" and searches the city's grouped rail stops rather than one specific station. Open the result and choose the full station name before paying.
Can I take a bicycle on a Trenord train to Como?
Non-folding bikes are allowed only on trains marked for bicycle transport, and the conductor can limit access when the train is crowded. Folded bikes up to 80 x 120 x 45 cm travel free; check the bicycle symbol on the exact departure because non-folding bikes are not carried on replacement buses.
Can I take a dog on a Trenord train to Como?
Small pets in carriers up to 70 x 30 x 50 cm and dogs on a lead with a muzzle and canine-registry certificate can travel on Trenord. Ordinary pets cannot travel during weekday peaks, 07:00-09:30 and 17:30-19:30; guide dogs are exempt. Lombardy-tariff journeys are free, while cross-border trips require the operator's animal supplement.
How early should I arrange reduced-mobility assistance at Como San Giovanni?
Request Sala Blu assistance at least 12 hours before the train's departure or arrival. Como San Giovanni's reference office is Sala Blu Milano, so arrange the service before travel and check the current lift status for the platform you need.
Does a train ticket to Como include the Lake Como ferry?
A standard Trenord rail ticket covers the rail route shown on the ticket, not a Navigazione Laghi ferry. Buy the boat ticket separately unless you choose a named train-and-boat product that explicitly includes both parts of the journey.
Can I take an earlier train with a Trenord digital ticket?
Use the "Activate early" function before boarding if the ticket allows the change. The ticket becomes usable immediately and its six-hour validity starts at that point.
