Palermo Centrale is the main station for long-distance trains, while Notarbartolo is useful for airport and local journeys.
Through trains reach Sicily by ferry
Choose a through Intercity or Intercity Notte if avoiding a mainland change matters more than speed. At Villa San Giovanni, the train is loaded onto a ferry, crosses the Strait of Messina and continues from Messina towards Palermo. Stay with the through service and follow the crew's instructions during the crossing.
The through mainland trains are Intercity and Intercity Notte, not Frecce. Any itinerary that starts with Frecciarossa needs a change before Palermo. Read the train numbers and transfer time before paying, especially when separate tickets are involved.
The train ferry takes about 30 minutes, although loading and unloading add time to the timetable. Passengers may leave the train for the ferry's passenger deck. Listen for the announcement and return in good time. Access can change during disruption or on an overnight journey.
Palermo Centrale is the long-distance default
Book Palermo Centrale for through Intercity and Intercity Notte services from mainland Italy. It is the city's main terminal and has bus and tram connections. If a booking screen displays only Palermo, open the details and confirm the full station name.
Palermo Centrale has 10 passenger tracks, with level or ramp access to each one. RFI passenger assistance and left luggage are available, but check the service details before relying on either. A station accessibility label does not guarantee the same boarding arrangement on every train.
Palermo Notarbartolo is useful for airport trains, urban rail and some regional journeys. It is not the usual station for mainland Intercity arrivals. Its five passenger tracks have lift access, but RFI does not provide passenger assistance there. Check lift status and arrange support for the exact station and train.
Intercity Notte makes the long journey usable
For Rome, allow between about 12 hours 40 minutes and 13 hours on the night train. The trip from Naples is roughly 10 hours. A direct Milan service takes more than 21 hours in either direction, so compare it with a faster daytime journey that includes a change.
Choose the accommodation for the length of the night, not only the fee. A seat costs least but gives little privacy. A four-berth couchette lets you lie down. A sleeper gives you a proper bed and more privacy, at a higher price.
Sleeping places are limited, especially for pass holders. Reserve early when a bed matters, then read the refund conditions and final arrival time before paying. A cheap seat is poor value if a sleepless night costs the first day in Palermo.
Rail passes still need night-train reservations
Interrail and Eurail passes can cover eligible Intercity Notte travel, but they do not provide a place automatically. Reserve the exact seat, couchette or sleeper before boarding. You need both the pass and the accommodation reservation.
Pass-holder fees are €3 for a seat and €41 for a four-berth couchette. Sleeper fees range from €48 for a place in a three-bed compartment to €122 for a private sleeper. Eurail self-service also charges €2 per person per train, plus €9 per order when a paper reservation is required. These are reservation and booking charges, not full ticket fares.
Check the train, accommodation and booking channel before payment. Pass-holder places are limited, and another departure may have different accommodation and a different total charge.
Daytime Intercity offers a direct alternative
A direct daytime Intercity between Rome and Palermo takes about 11 hours 35 minutes. Choose it if you prefer to travel by day, want to see the Strait crossing in daylight or cannot find suitable sleeping accommodation. It still uses the train ferry.
Choose the daytime train for a daylight journey, but expect it to use most of a travel day. Reservations are compulsory, so check the departure, arrival, assigned seat and planned works before comparing it with an overnight berth.
Palermo Airport trains use two city stations
For Falcone Borsellino Airport, search for Palermo Aeroporto. The railway station is in the basement of the terminal. Regionale normally runs up to two trains per hour in each direction, although some periods have one.
Genio Express trains run between Palermo Centrale and the airport with Palermo Notarbartolo as their only intermediate stop. The trip from Palermo Aeroporto to Notarbartolo takes a little over 30 minutes. This does not cover the full journey to Palermo Centrale. The adult fare from Palermo is €6.80. Compare the stops and arrival time, then leave enough margin to reach airline check-in.
Tap&Tap contactless payment is available on the Palermo airport corridor. Tap in and out with the same physical card or device, and use a separate card or device for each traveller. Missing the exit tap can trigger the regional maximum fare instead of the correct journey fare.
Regional trains need exact destinations
Use Palermo Centrale for the broadest choice of regional departures. Cefalù is direct and commonly takes about 50 minutes to one hour. Through trains to Messina take about three hours, but works can alter both the timing and whether part of the trip uses a bus.
Agrigento needs an extra check. Infrastructure work has suspended the railway over the affected section, with regional trains cancelled and replaced by buses. For the Aeolian Islands, book Milazzo and plan a separate local transfer between its railway station and the port.
Read the complete itinerary for Catania or Trapani instead of assuming a direct train. A bus section, diversion or extra change can reshape the day. Choose the return before committing to a day trip, and check the last practical service in both directions.
Regional ticket rules depend on the format
Buy the ticket for the train category you intend to use. A regional ticket is for Regionale services, while Intercity and Intercity Notte have their own reserved products. Some regional tickets for Palermo's urban area display the destination simply as Palermo, so confirm which city station the train serves.
The ticket format decides what you need to do before boarding. A Digital Regional Ticket activates automatically at the scheduled departure of the chosen train. An Electronic Regional Ticket is already validated. A single paper regional ticket must be validated before departure, while Tap&Tap needs both an entry and exit tap. Follow the instructions for the ticket in your hand.
Palermo Centrale puts the old centre within reach
Use Centrale when your accommodation is in the historic centre around Via Maqueda. The street runs from the station towards Quattro Canti, so walking may be simpler than making another connection with light luggage. Check the final distance before choosing the station because Palermo's rail stops serve different neighbourhoods.
Tram line 1 terminates at Palermo Centrale. Use it or a current AMAT bus when the hotel is farther away or luggage makes the walk awkward. Old bus numbers are a poor basis for the trip. Check the same-day urban journey after confirming which Palermo station your train uses.
Planned works can change the best itinerary
Check the exact train again shortly before departure. Planned engineering work can retime, divert or partly replace mainland and Sicily services with buses. This matters most for sleepers, flights and separately ticketed connections.
Keep a generous margin when an airport train follows a long-distance arrival. If a replacement bus appears, check its departure point, luggage arrangements and accessibility before travel. Pick an itinerary that still leaves room for a late connection.

Frequently asked questions
How early can pass holders reserve Intercity Notte?
Intercity Notte reservations can open up to six months before travel. Pass-holder places are limited, so reserve a couchette or sleeper when your plans become firm rather than waiting for the cheapest accommodation to sell out.
Can you buy food on Intercity Notte?
Intercity Notte has a trolley service selling snacks and drinks. It is still sensible to bring water and anything substantial you want to eat, especially on the long Rome or Milan journey to Palermo.
How do you get from Milazzo station to the ferry port?
Milazzo railway station is about 3 km from the ferry port. A local bus links the station and port, and taxis are also available outside the station. Check the current bus timetable before sailing.
How much notice is needed for assistance at Palermo Centrale?
For assistance between 07:45 and 22:30, request RFI support in person or by phone at least one hour before the train arrives or departs. Check the separate arrangements if you need help outside those hours.
When do Palermo Airport trains start and finish?
On working days, the first train leaves Palermo Centrale at 04:00 and Palermo Aeroporto at 05:18. The last leaves Centrale at 22:12 and the airport at 00:20. Confirm the times for your exact travel date.
