Catania to Palermo by train

The Catania to Palermo train crosses Sicily from east to west, connecting the island’s two main cities in roughly 3 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours depending on the service. Trenitalia runs the route with Regionale, Regionale Veloce, and Intercity trains throughout the day.

Before you book, consider the bus. SAIS Trasporti and FlixBus both run direct coaches from Catania to Palermo in around 2 hours 30 minutes, and the fares are comparable. If getting there quickly is what matters, the bus usually wins. The train makes more sense if you want a seat reservation, prefer not to deal with road traffic, or are travelling with a rail pass.

Direct trains and changes

Not always. Some services run direct from Catania Centrale to Palermo Centrale, but others require a change at Caltanissetta Xirbi, a junction in the middle of the island. Intercity trains tend to be the more direct option. When booking, open the full itinerary and check before you pay: a change adds at least 30 minutes to your journey.

Sicily has no high-speed trains. There are no Frecciarossa services on the island, and the rail network is older and slower than the Italian mainland. Delays happen, especially in summer. If you have a tight connection at the other end, allow extra time.

Tickets and fares

Trenitalia operates two main types of service on this route.

Regional trains (Regionale and Regionale Veloce)

These are the most frequent and cheapest option. Regional fares are distance-based and fixed, so you do not gain much by booking early. Catania to Palermo by regional train typically costs around €13 to €15.

Regional trains are second class only. If you have a paper ticket, validate it in the green machines on the platform before boarding. Digital tickets on the Trenitalia app do not need physical validation but must be checked in through the app before the train departs.

Intercity trains

Intercity is faster and offers first and second class. Second class starts from around €18 to €21; first class from around €25 to €28. Seats recline, and power outlets are available. Some Intercity services on this route have a bar car; others do not. Check your specific train.

Advance fares and discounts

Trenitalia’s Super Economy fares can reduce the Intercity price by up to 30% when booked at least 7 days ahead. These tickets are non-refundable and cannot be changed. Standard fares are more flexible.

Group discounts apply from 2 people: groups of 2 to 5 typically get around 20% off; groups of 6 or more around 30%. Tickets for a group must be purchased together. Children under 4 travel free, sharing a seat with an adult. Discounts for young travellers (12 to 26) and seniors (60 and over) are available on some services. Buying tickets

The most reliable way to book is directly on the Trenitalia website or app. Tickets are also available at station ticket offices, at self-service machines in both stations (card only), or through resellers such as Omio, Trainline, and Rail Europe.

Interrail and Eurail passes

Both the Interrail Global Pass and Eurail Global Pass are valid on Trenitalia routes including those on Sicily.

Regionale and Regionale Veloce trains do not require a seat reservation with a pass, so board any available service. For Intercity trains, a reservation may be required. The fee is typically low when applicable. Check current reservation requirements on the Interrail or Eurail website before you travel, as these can change by service.

Train or bus

The honest answer: bus is usually faster.

SAIS Trasporti runs direct express coaches from Catania to Palermo in around 2 hours 30 minutes. FlixBus also covers the route. Prices are competitive with the train. For a quick city-to-city transfer, the bus is the practical default.

The train earns its place in a few situations. If you are travelling on an Interrail or Eurail pass, the train is covered and the bus is not. If you want a guaranteed seat with more legroom than a coach, Intercity is more comfortable. And if the weather or traffic is bad, the train is unaffected.

Choose the bus for speed. Choose the train for comfort, reliability, or pass travel.

Catania Centrale

Catania Centrale is in the eastern city centre, close to the waterfront. The station has a staffed ticket office, self-service machines, a café, free Wi-Fi, and accessible toilets. Left luggage is typically available from 07:00 to 21:00 at around €5 per item for 24 hours; confirm current hours and fees on arrival.

From the airport: Catania Fontanarossa Airport is around 3 km from the station. The AMT Alibus connects the airport to the city centre frequently; it stops near the station. Taxis are available outside arrivals.

Palermo Centrale

Palermo Centrale sits at the southern edge of the historic centre. It has ticket offices (approximately 05:30 to 21:30), cafés, shops, a pharmacy, free Wi-Fi, lifts, and a tourist information desk. Left luggage is typically open from 06:00 to 22:00 at around €6 per item for 24 hours; check current hours on arrival.

Airport connection: The Trinacria Express runs directly from Palermo Centrale to Palermo Falcone-Borsellino Airport. If you are flying out of Palermo, this is the most straightforward way to reach the airport from the station.

Getting around Palermo

AMAT city buses cover most of central Palermo. Buy tickets at tobacco shops and newsstands near the station. Taxis wait outside the main entrance. The historic centre is walkable from the station: Teatro Massimo is about 15 minutes on foot; the Palermo Cathedral around 10 minutes.

Luggage

Trenitalia has no strict luggage weight limits for these services. Standard guidance allows two pieces per passenger, each up to roughly 70 x 50 x 30 cm and 23 kg. Larger bags fit in the storage areas at the ends of carriages or on overhead racks. An additional fee of around €10 applies for extra pieces beyond the allowance.

Small pets in approved carriers travel free. Larger dogs need a paid ticket and a muzzle.
