Frequently asked questions

How long does the Pisa to Florence train take?

It depends on the service. Regionale Veloce trains make limited stops and typically take 48 to 51 minutes. Regionale trains stop at every station and take around 73 to 81 minutes. Plan for around an hour if you are not sure which service you are catching.

How much does the Pisa to Florence train cost?

Regional tickets (Regionale and Regionale Veloce) cost around €9.30. The fare is fixed, so booking early makes no difference to the price. Intercity trains cost more; check trenitalia.com for the current fare.

Do I need to book in advance?

No. Regional fares are fixed and seats are not allocated, so there is no price advantage to booking early. Buy your ticket on the day at the station, on trenitalia.com, or via the Trenitalia app.

Do I need a seat reservation?

No reservation is needed for Regionale or Regionale Veloce trains. Buy a ticket and board any departure. If you travel on an Intercity service, a seat assignment may be included.

Which stations do these trains use?

Trains run from Pisa Centrale to Firenze Santa Maria Novella (SMN), which is the right station for the city centre. If you are coming from Pisa Airport, take the PisaMover shuttle to Pisa Centrale first. The ride takes around 5 minutes and costs €6.50. There is no direct train from the airport terminal to Florence. A small number of Intercity services stop at Firenze Campo di Marte instead of SMN; Campo di Marte is about 3 km east of the centre, so check your ticket before you travel.

Can I use an Interrail or Eurail Pass on this route?

Yes. Trenitalia regional trains on this route are included in both Interrail and Eurail with no reservation fee. Mark a travel day on your pass and board. If you choose an Intercity service, a small reservation fee applies, currently around €3. Check the Interrail or Eurail website for the current figure before you travel.
