Rome to Sorrento by train

There is no direct train from Rome to Sorrento. The journey always requires a change in Naples, but the connection is straightforward once you know it. Take a high-speed train from Rome Termini to Napoli Centrale, then make your way to the Circumvesuviana railway at Napoli Garibaldi or Napoli Porta Nolana for the final hour to Sorrento.

Most travellers should plan for about 3 to 3.5 hours in total, including the change in Naples. Leg 2 (Naples to Sorrento): The Circumvesuviana is a regional railway run by EAV (Ente Autonomo Volturno), entirely separate from Trenitalia. It goes from Napoli Garibaldi and Napoli Porta Nolana to Sorrento, taking around 1 hour to 1 hour 10 minutes, with stops at Ercolano (for Herculaneum), Pompeii Villa dei Misteri, and other towns along the coast. Trains run roughly every 30 minutes.

Transfer in Naples: The Circumvesuviana platforms are at Napoli Garibaldi station, which sits right next to Napoli Centrale. Follow signs for Circumvesuviana; the walk takes about five minutes. The Campania Express departs from Napoli Porta Nolana, a short walk or metro ride further. Give yourself at least 20 to 30 minutes between your high-speed arrival and the Circumvesuviana departure.

Italo NTV

Italo also sells a combined train-and-bus ticket that takes you from Rome directly to Sorrento. The Naples to Sorrento leg goes by coach, which means you skip the Circumvesuviana transfer altogether. Useful if you prefer a single booking or have a lot of luggage. Journey times are similar to the train-plus-Circumvesuviana option.

EAV / Circumvesuviana

The Circumvesuviana is EAV’s suburban railway. It is standard class only, gets busy in summer, and has no reserved seating. You board and find a space. The trains are older than the Frecciarossa, with limited luggage storage. Keep your bags close, particularly at busier stations.

Where to buy Circumvesuviana tickets: at the windows or machines at Napoli Garibaldi or Porta Nolana, or through the GoEav app. The ticket runs on the Unico Campania regional tariff.
