Frequently asked questions

How long does the Naples to Rome train take?

High-speed Frecciarossa and Italo trains take around 1 hour to 1 hour 10 minutes. The fastest scheduled services arrive in under an hour. Trenitalia regional trains take roughly 2 hours 15 minutes to over 3 hours.

How much do Naples to Rome train tickets cost?

Frecciarossa and Italo advance fares start from around €14.90 in the cheapest class. Prices rise as the departure date approaches because both operators use demand-based pricing. Regional train fares are fixed at around €9 to €12 regardless of when you book.

Do I need to book Naples to Rome train tickets in advance?

For Frecciarossa and Italo, booking ahead makes a real difference. Advance fares in the cheapest class start from around €14.90, while last-minute tickets in the same class can cost three or four times more. Regional train fares are fixed and do not change with demand, so advance booking carries no price advantage there. If you are travelling on a specific high-speed service, book as soon as your plans are confirmed.

Which Naples station should I use for trains to Rome?

Book Napoli Centrale for almost every trip. It is the main station in central Naples, with metro connections and Circumvesuviana services for Sorrento and Pompeii. Napoli Afragola is about 11 km north of the city centre and is only useful if you are arriving from north of Naples or your accommodation is near Afragola. Check the station name before paying, since a small number of Frecciarossa services call at Afragola rather than Centrale.

Can I use a rail pass on Naples to Rome trains?

Interrail and Eurail passes are valid on Trenitalia services but require a seat reservation on Frecciarossa. The reservation fee is €13 per journey. Regional trains are covered by the pass with no reservation fee. Italo is not covered by Interrail or Eurail passes. If you are travelling on a pass, use Frecciarossa with the €13 reservation, or take a regional train to avoid any extra fee.

What ticket flexibility is available on Naples to Rome trains?

Trenitalia and Italo both offer fare tiers with different flexibility. Super Economy fares (the cheapest) cannot be changed or refunded. Economy fares require an upgrade to a Base fare to make changes, with no refund. Base fares allow changes up to 60 minutes before departure with a 20% refund deduction. If your plans might change, book Base rather than Super Economy.

What are the onboard facilities on Naples to Rome trains?

All high-speed classes on both operators include Wi-Fi, power outlets, and air conditioning. On Frecciarossa, Business class adds a complimentary food box with Illy espresso and restaurant car access. On Italo, Prima and Club Executive classes include a welcome snack and drink service at your seat. Regional trains have basic seating and air conditioning on most services, with no Wi-Fi or catering.
