Naples to Rome by train

Two high-speed operators run directly between Naples and Rome: Trenitalia’s Frecciarossa and Italo. Both serve the Napoli Centrale to Roma Termini route. Most journeys take around 1 hour to 1 hour 10 minutes, and the fastest services arrive in under an hour. Advance tickets start from around €14.90. Trenitalia regional trains cover the same route in roughly 2 hours 15 minutes to over 3 hours at a lower fixed fare.

Trains run throughout the day, from early morning to late at night. During busy periods, Frecciarossa and Italo services run two to three times an hour.

Train tickets and seating options

Standard and premium classes

Frecciarossa has four classes: Standard (2nd class), Premium (2nd class with more legroom), Business (1st class), and Executive (premium 1st class). Standard includes air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and power outlets at every seat. Business adds a complimentary food box with fresh items and Illy espresso, plus access to a restaurant car. Executive is the private-cabin-style tier at the top of the price range.

Italo also has four classes, under different names: Smart (entry-level), Comfort (more space), Prima (roughly equivalent to business class), and Club Executive (the premium tier). Prima and Club Executive include a welcome service with snacks and drinks. All Italo classes have Wi-Fi, power outlets, and air conditioning.

If you want a meal included, book Frecciarossa Business or Italo Prima. For a journey of about an hour, Standard or Smart is fine.

One thing worth knowing before you compare across operators: Italo and Trenitalia use different names for similar tiers. Italo’s Prima is roughly the equivalent of Trenitalia’s Business in service level. Do not let the different labels confuse the comparison.

EUR ranges are orientation only. Exact fares depend on the service, class, and how far in advance you book, so check the price for your specific train when you book.

Only book Super Economy if your plans are fixed. It is the cheapest option, but it cannot be changed or refunded.

High-speed Frecciarossa and Italo tickets include a mandatory seat reservation in the price. If you hold a rail pass, the reservation rules are different; see the "Seat reservations and rail passes" section below.

Train companies and service types

Frecciarossa (Trenitalia)

Frecciarossa is Trenitalia’s flagship high-speed service on this route. Trains run between Napoli Centrale and Roma Termini, with journey times from just under 1 hour to around 1 hour 10 minutes depending on the service. Advance fares start from around €15 in Standard class and rise with demand and proximity to departure.

Frecciarossa has more departures throughout the day than any other operator on this route.

Italo

Italo runs high-speed trains between Napoli Centrale and Roma Termini, with journey times broadly similar to Frecciarossa at around 1 hour to 1 hour 10 minutes. Advance tickets start from €14.90 in Smart class. Italo trains have Wi-Fi, power outlets, air conditioning, and an onboard café. In Prima and Club Executive classes, a welcome snack and drink service is included at your seat.

The two operators cover the same route with similar journey times and comparable advance fares. If the cheapest available ticket matters most, check both at the time of booking. One difference matters for pass holders, covered below: Italo is a private company, so rail passes do not work the same way on its trains.

Regional trains

Trenitalia’s regional services (Regionale and Regionale Veloce) run the same Naples-Rome corridor at a lower price. Journey times are roughly 2 hours 15 minutes to over 3 hours, with more stops. Fares are fixed rather than dynamic, starting from around €9-€12. Regional trains have no seat reservation and simpler onboard facilities.

Regional trains are worth taking if you have time to spare, want the cheapest rail fare, or hold a pass and want to avoid the Frecciarossa reservation fee (more on that below).

Intercity (IC) trains also run on this corridor, but infrequently and without a meaningful advantage over Frecciarossa or regional services on this route. They are not a recommended primary option here.

Train stations

Naples: Napoli Centrale vs Napoli Afragola

Book Napoli Centrale for almost every trip. It is Naples’ main station, in the city centre at Piazza Garibaldi, with direct metro access (Line 1 and Line 2) and Circumvesuviana connections for Sorrento, Pompeii, and Herculaneum.

Napoli Afragola is a newer high-speed station about 11 km north of central Naples. Do not book Afragola just because it appears as a cheaper or faster option. From Afragola you still need a separate transfer into the city, which can cancel out any time or money saved. Afragola makes sense only if you are arriving from north of Naples and connecting straight onto another train, or if your accommodation is genuinely near Afragola rather than in central Naples. For most visitors staying in the centre, that is not the case.

A small number of Frecciarossa services stop only at Afragola, not Centrale. If a booking page shows just "Naples" without naming the station, open the train details and confirm it before you pay.

Rome: Roma Termini vs Roma Tiburtina

Most Frecciarossa and all Italo services arrive at Roma Termini, Rome’s main railway hub. It connects to metro lines A and B and is a short taxi or bus ride from the historic centre.

Roma Tiburtina is served by some Frecciarossa services and many regional trains. It is less central than Termini and needs a metro ride into the city. When booking, confirm your arrival station. If your train shows Tiburtina, allow extra time to reach central Rome, and factor in the metro fare and transfer when weighing a slightly cheaper Tiburtina service against a Termini one.

Route options and connections

High-speed direct services

All Frecciarossa and Italo trains between Naples and Rome are direct, with no change of train. Services depart Napoli Centrale and arrive at Roma Termini in around 1 hour to 1 hour 10 minutes. The fastest scheduled services run the route in under an hour.

Trains run throughout the day, with peak-hour departures two to three times per hour. The first services leave in the early morning. The last are in the late evening.

Regional train routes

Regional trains take longer, roughly 2 hours 15 minutes to over 3 hours, and stop at intermediate stations including Latina and Cassino. Some require a change. They depart Napoli Centrale, with some services also calling at or departing from Roma Tiburtina.

Regional trains are useful if you want to stop at a town along the way, or if you want the cheapest rail fare.

Airport and local connections

At Rome, the Leonardo Express connects Roma Termini directly to Fiumicino Airport (FCO). At Naples, the metro at Napoli Piazza Garibaldi (adjacent to Napoli Centrale) gives access to the city, and Circumvesuviana trains depart from a lower level of Napoli Centrale for Sorrento, Pompeii, and Herculaneum.

Seat reservations and rail passes

If you hold an Interrail or Eurail rail pass, the pass alone does not get you onto a Frecciarossa. A separate seat reservation is mandatory for every high-speed journey and must be booked in addition to the pass. The reservation fee is €13 per journey in both standard and first class. Without a reservation, pass holders cannot board the train.

Book your Frecciarossa reservation through the Trenitalia website, the Trenitalia app, or at a Trenitalia ticket office before you travel. Reservations cannot be made at the gate, so do not arrive expecting to sort it on the platform.

Regional trains are different. Interrail and Eurail passes are valid on Trenitalia regional services with no reservation fee. There is no seat reservation on regional trains; you board and find a seat.

Intercity (IC) trains require a mandatory reservation for pass holders. The IC reservation fee is €3 per journey.

Italo is not covered by Interrail or Eurail passes. Italo is a private operator (NTV), separate from Trenitalia, and it runs outside the Interrail and Eurail networks. If you are travelling on a pass, plan around Trenitalia: Frecciarossa with the €13 reservation, or regional trains with no fee. Do not board an Italo train expecting a pass to cover it. Pass coverage can change over time, so if you specifically want to use Italo with a pass, confirm it on the Eurail or Interrail website first, but as things stand the pass does not include it.

If you are using a pass and want to keep extra costs down, regional trains are reservation-free and covered in full. If you want high-speed travel with a pass, factor in the €13 Frecciarossa reservation fee when comparing the total against buying a full ticket outright.

How to book and ticket prices

Booking directly

Book directly through the operator:

Booking directly means you see the full cost upfront, choose your seat on an interactive map, and receive digital tickets to your phone. There are no added booking fees when you book through the operator.

Third-party platforms are also available, but they typically add a service charge on top of the ticket price.

Ticket prices and fare tiers

Frecciarossa and Italo fares are dynamic. Prices rise as the departure date approaches and trains fill up. Advance fares start from around €14.90 on Italo and around €15 on Frecciarossa in the cheapest class. Last-minute tickets in the same class can cost three or four times the advance price.

Book as soon as your travel dates are confirmed. On this corridor, the difference between booking two weeks ahead and two days ahead can be substantial, because Frecciarossa and Italo both use demand-based pricing.

Ways to save money

Book early. The cheapest Frecciarossa and Italo fares are available weeks in advance. Super Economy fares start around €9-€15 but cannot be changed or refunded. If you book Super Economy, your plans must be fixed.

Take a regional train if time allows. Regional fares are fixed at around €9-€12 regardless of when you book, which makes them the cheapest rail option on this route. The journey takes 2 hours 15 minutes to over 3 hours, which is the trade-off.

If you hold a rail pass, think carefully before using it for high-speed trains here. Interrail and Eurail pass holders must pay €13 per Frecciarossa journey as a mandatory reservation fee. A regional train covers the same journey for nothing extra on the pass, so taking the regional saves you €13 per leg, or €26 on a round trip. On a route this short, that €13 reservation can cost almost as much as a cheap advance Frecciarossa ticket bought without a pass. The pass is only worth using for high-speed travel here if you are already covering longer journeys with it. If you have time to spare, take the regional and keep the €13.

The bus is the price floor. Bus services between Naples and Rome run from around €7 in advance, though the journey takes roughly 3 to 4 hours. If price is the only priority, the bus is cheaper than any train option.

Trenitalia’s CartaFreccia and Italo’s Italo Più programmes reward frequent travellers with points redeemable against future tickets. Both are free to join. Some advance fares also offer group reductions for two or more travellers; check the operator’s website for current availability.

Train times and trip duration

High-speed Frecciarossa and Italo trains run throughout the day, from early morning until late at night. During busy periods there are two to three departures per hour from Napoli Centrale. Off-peak, the gap between services widens to 30-60 minutes.

Most high-speed services take around 1 hour to 1 hour 10 minutes. The fastest scheduled services arrive in under an hour. Journey times vary by service, so check the specific departure when booking.

Local train times

Regional trains take longer because of more stops and, on some services, a required change. They are less frequent than high-speed services and do not run to a fixed schedule pattern. Check trenitalia.com for current regional timetable options.

Travelling Rome to Naples

The same Frecciarossa and Italo trains run in both directions. Travelling from Rome to Naples, journey times, fares, reservation rules, and booking channels are the same. Trains depart Roma Termini throughout the day, with the return journey to Napoli Centrale at equivalent frequency.

Train amenities

Frecciarossa: All classes have Wi-Fi, power outlets at every seat, air conditioning, and luggage storage. Business class adds a complimentary food box (fresh items, Illy espresso). A restaurant car and café bar are available.

Italo: Smart and Comfort classes have Wi-Fi, power outlets, and air conditioning. Prima and Club Executive add a welcome snack and drink service at your seat, plus access to an onboard café.

Regional trains: Basic seating with air conditioning on most services. No Wi-Fi or catering. The fare is lower partly because the onboard experience is more basic.

Seat selection

When booking Frecciarossa or Italo tickets directly through the operator’s website or app, you can choose your seat from an interactive map. Seat selection is included in the ticket price for all high-speed fares.

Regional trains have no reserved seating. You board and choose any available seat.

These conditions can change, so check the fare rules shown at booking for your exact ticket. For regional train tickets, one schedule change is allowed up to 23:59 the day before travel.

Baggage rules

There are no extra baggage charges on Naples-Rome trains. You can bring up to three pieces of luggage. High-speed trains have overhead racks, under-seat space, and dedicated storage at the ends of carriages.

The Bagaglio Facile door-to-door luggage delivery service collects bags from your accommodation and delivers them to your destination:

Bookings must be made by phone at least 24 hours before travel, and prices can change, so confirm the current rate when you book. Porter services at main stations (including Roma Termini) cost around €5 per service, paid directly to the porter.
