Naples to Bologna by train

Both Trenitalia and Italo run direct high-speed trains between Naples and Bologna. No changes required. The fastest Frecciarossa trains take around 3 hours 11 minutes; Italo services typically take about 3 hours 18 minutes. Advance fares start from around €19 to €27 for standard class, depending on the operator, date, and how early you book. Seat reservations are included in the ticket price for standard passengers; pass holders pay a separate fee.

The route runs via Rome and Florence on Italy’s Alta Velocità high-speed line, covering around 575 km. Trenitalia also runs slower InterCity services on this corridor, and a night train is available if you want to travel overnight.

Trenitalia

Trenitalia runs Frecciarossa high-speed trains on this route, along with InterCity and the overnight Intercity Notte.

Frecciarossa trains reach up to 300 km/h and cover the Naples to Bologna journey in around 3 hours 11 to 3 hours 30 minutes depending on the departure. Four service classes are available:

• Standard: comfortable seats with power outlets and Wi-Fi; at-seat service on some departures

• Premium: more legroom than Standard, same amenities, quieter carriage

• Business: full reclining seats, wider seat pitch, at-seat service included

• Executive: the top tier, with wide leather seats, dedicated lounge cars, and full service

InterCity trains take longer, typically around 3 hours 45 minutes to over 4 hours, but fares tend to be lower. For pass holders, the InterCity reservation fee is only €3.

The Intercity Notte is a different kind of option, not a cheaper alternative. Journey time is around 6 to 7 hours, but you arrive in the morning without a hotel night. Reservations are mandatory and cover your accommodation type: seat, shared couchette (up to six berths), or a sleeper. Check availability directly on Trenitalia.com.

Italo

Italo runs high-speed trains between Naples and Bologna in around 3 hours 18 minutes. Three classes are available:

• Smart: standard service with reclining leather seats, power outlets, and free Wi-Fi

• Prima: extra legroom, complimentary snacks and drinks, quieter carriage

• Club Executive: premium class with spacious seats, catering, and personal screens

Higher Italo classes include Fast Track at major stations, giving you priority access to the platform.

One critical point for pass holders: Interrail and Eurail passes are not valid on Italo. If you hold a pass and want to travel between Naples and Bologna, book Trenitalia. Italo requires a full-price ticket regardless of your pass type.

Tickets and classes

Standard class

Standard class on both Frecciarossa and Italo is a comfortable choice for this journey. Advance fares on Trenitalia start from around €19 to €27 for Frecciarossa Standard class. Prices move with demand. Italo Smart class advance fares start from around €26.90, and both operators use dynamic pricing, so the same train can cost substantially more on a Friday afternoon than a Tuesday morning.

Base fares are fully flexible, changeable, and refundable, but cost significantly more than advance prices on both operators.

It is worth checking both Trenitalia.com and Italotreno.com for your travel date before booking. The cheaper option changes by departure.

Ways to save

FrecciaYOUNG: Trenitalia offers fixed-price fares for travellers under 30, starting from around €19. You need a free CartaFRECCIA loyalty account to access them. These can be cheaper than standard advance fares, particularly on popular departures.

FrecciaSENIOR: CartaFRECCIA members aged 60 or over can book fixed fares starting from €29 or €39 depending on the service. These must be booked at least 11 days before departure.

FrecciaFRIENDS: Groups of 3 to 5 travelling together on Frecciarossa can get discounts ranging from 20% to 50%.

Family fares: The programme depends on your train type, not just your family size. On Frecciarossa and other Frecce trains, FrecciaFAMILY gives children free travel and adults a 50% discount. On InterCity services, Bimbi Gratis gives children under 15 free travel and adults a 40% discount. They are different schemes. Check which one applies to your specific train.

Trenitalia opens bookings around 120 days in advance. The lowest advance fares go first, so booking early is worthwhile on this route.

When trains run

Direct high-speed services run throughout the day. Around 30 or more combined Frecciarossa and Italo departures run between Naples and Bologna daily. First departures from Napoli Centrale are around 05:40; last services leave around 22:00. Check the exact timetable on the Trenitalia or Italo website for your travel date, as frequency and timing can vary by day of the week and season.

InterCity services are less frequent and take longer, but fares are lower. If you hold an Interrail or Eurail Pass and want the cheapest pass-holder reservation (€3), these are also the trains to check.

Train stations

Naples: Napoli Centrale

Napoli Centrale is the main departure station for this route. It sits on Piazza Garibaldi in the city centre, around 1 km east of the historic quarter, with Metro lines 1 and 2 stopping directly outside.

The Circumvesuviana commuter railway departs from the lower level of Napoli Centrale and is the direct route to Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Sorrento. The Alibus airport shuttle runs from Piazza Garibaldi outside the main entrance.

For lounges: Trenitalia has a FrecciaClub lounge at Napoli Centrale, available to Business and Executive class travellers and CartaFRECCIA Platino members. Italo has a Casa Italo lounge for eligible Prima and Club Executive passengers.

Some Frecciarossa services also call at Napoli Afragola, a high-speed station about 10 km north of the city centre opened in 2017. Most travellers should use Napoli Centrale. Afragola is useful if you are coming from the north of the city or the Caserta area, so check your specific departure to confirm which station it uses.

Bologna: Bologna Centrale

Bologna Centrale is the arrival station. High-speed trains at Bologna arrive at underground platforms beneath the main station building, so expect to take the escalators or lifts up to the main hall on arrival.

The station is about 600 metres from Piazza Maggiore, with buses and taxis from the main entrance on Piazza delle Medaglie d’Oro.

For airport access: the Marconi Express monorail connects Bologna Centrale directly to Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport (BLQ) in around 7 minutes. It runs frequently and is considerably faster than the airport bus.

Trenitalia has a FRECCIALounge for Business and Executive class passengers. Italo has an Italo Club lounge for eligible travellers.

Seat reservations

Seat reservations are mandatory on both Frecciarossa and Italo. Standard ticket holders: the reservation is included in the ticket price. No extra fee.

Interrail and Eurail pass holders travelling on Trenitalia must book a separate reservation. Fees are:

Pass-holder reservations can be booked through interrail.eu, Italiarail, or ÖBB. ÖBB cannot handle Intercity Notte reservations; for those, book through Trenitalia directly or Italiarail.

Pass-holder places are quota-limited. On busy departures they can sell out before the train is full, so book the reservation as early as the booking window allows.

Interrail and Eurail passes are not valid on Italo. A pass alone will not get you onto an Italo train. You need a full-price ticket.

Interrail and Eurail passes

Interrail and Eurail passes are valid on Trenitalia services between Naples and Bologna, including Frecciarossa and InterCity. They are not valid on Italo.

Frecciarossa: pass holders pay a €13 seat reservation fee. InterCity: €3. Both must be booked before you travel; you cannot arrange the reservation at the station gate or on the train.

If you are using a pass on this route, choose Trenitalia. The journey time difference between Frecciarossa and Italo is about 7 minutes. The pass decision is simple.

Changes and refunds

Both Trenitalia and Italo use dynamic pricing with fare tiers that affect your options after purchase.

Trenitalia’s main tiers:

• Super Economy: lowest advance price; cannot be changed or refunded once booked

• Economy: slightly higher; limited change rights, partial refund may apply

• Base: most flexible; changes generally available before departure, subject to a fee

If your dates are fixed, Super Economy gives the best price. If your plans might change, the extra cost of Economy or Base is usually worth it.

Italo works similarly. Low Smart fares carry strict conditions; higher flex tiers allow more latitude. Check the conditions of your specific fare at the time of booking.

Getting there by other means

The train is the right call for almost everyone on this route.

If budget is the priority, coach services such as Flixbus and Itabus, which both operate on this corridor, take around 6 to 7 hours and can be significantly cheaper than last-minute train fares. The gap narrows when you book the train in advance.

Flying between Naples (NAP) and Bologna (BLQ) does not compete on time once you include airport check-in, security, and transfers at both ends. City centre to city centre, the high-speed train wins.
